Dunno what their prices are like on other things, but 20-40% off most of their digital pianos would bring the price within touching distance of reality and what their competitors were selling for.

Not surprised… selling at rrp LOL

Neither of you have ever bargained before? Always got good prices and service from them.

Very sad to see Allans go.

Bargaining does nothing with their prices, tried to buy a Piano from them and they gave me a price of $5500, telling me this was their "lowest price". Went to another music store and they were willing to get me the said Piano for $3400, delivered straight from the distributor.

But yes, Allans closing is sad nonetheless.

    • I like the place, the staff and everything in it. This is the last place I knew where you can still buy guitar tablature books.

I always always wanted to buy anything from the shop. I never. Just plain too expensive.

Dunno, I always felt Allans was basically for people who either didn't know or didn't care to get a better price. I'm not averse to a bit of bargaining - naturally - but I don't want to spend 20 minutes of foreplay just to get the damned thing on par with street price everywhere else. After dealing with one dude who seemed quite miffed that I wasn't willing to pay extra just because it's Allans, I gave up on em.

This is pretty sad :( Seemed to be the last of the big music chains.

Their prices can be anything from 25% to 40% dearer than some online retailers. I know brick-and-mortar stores have much higher overheads but it still does not justify the price difference. No wonder they went under. Sad but inevitable.

Considering their starting prices, you may pick up a few small bargains from their closing down sale but I won't go out of my way for it.

Yet another industry with an Australia tax unfortunately. Plus, there's only a handful of distributors/importers that overseas companies will deal with, usually with exclusive agreements, so there's only one mob that can bring in a particular brand, and they're free to then add whatever they want on top. Having said that, the retail store markups are still astronomical (I've heard from an inside source some popular high-end cables hit 2000% (yep, three zeroes)).

      • i actually believe that :(

        So a $1 cable for $2000?!

        • +2

          1$ = 100%
          ? = 2000%

        • Correct, Make that $20. Good profit. I shouldn't watch TV and OzB at the same time ;-)

Not all that sad they are closing for me. It was kinda expected since they are just simply overpriced for EVERYTHING in their store.

Anyone else having trouble with their internet site just being horrifically slow?

    • Yes. It was always horrifically slow. Even when I tried to buy an amp from them 4 years ago, and various other goodies ever since. Sometimes it feels like it's almost intentional… Like they really don't want you to compare their prices to the rest of the Internet.

yeah sad to see them go.. was it due to teaming up with BH?

  • +2

    Is Billie Hyde closing also?

    • The URL should give it away - they merged years ago.

      • ive been to Billie Hyde here in Perth hundreds of times and never noticed it was called Alans Billie Hyde.

        • Probably cos it was Allans Billy Hyde

    good riddance

I buy my daughter's music books on ebay. Two places sell them. I don't have to bother with going to the local store, getting a staff members attention, wait for them to find it, wait for them to ring it up, wait for the cc transaction to go through, be sent on my way without a bag… Not to mention I don't have to drive the car there and park.

I get about 25% off, delivered with no hassles and a few velocity points. About 45 minutes saved as well.

To hell with these no service bricks and mortar shitholes.

  • No surprise, it took them 3 months to get the speakers delivered to me.

  • Is the price listed on their website already reduced price?

    • Hopefully not…… as they are still higher than elsewhere….

Just read it's the whole lot- Allan's and the Billy Hyde Stores. Billy Hyde's bought out a lot of other good music stores and then added their margins (Anyone remember Music Junction Blackburn?).

The sad part is that sometimes I need something quickly I can't wait for, such as a saxophone reed for a gig, and Billy Hydes was one of the few places that had a decent range that was above beginner level.

  • Anyone know if the prices on the website are already discounted?
Might pick up an electronic drum kit for rock band if it's compatible.

Years ago, Allans had an online outlet that actually had reasonable prices and cheap or free shipping. I thought this side of the business was doing well until one day it just wasn't there anymore.

If the bricks and mortar stores can't match the cost of their own online goods (incl. shipping & GST), then no wonder they struggled to remain solvent.

searched for 15 minutes and could only find one thing on the whole site that was actually a bargain

Problem with this sale is there prices are already 40% higher. Reason i never bought anything from there stores, they dont even bother to try and bargain. Alot of stores these days just say well just go buy it there then, like jbhifi.

  • They weren't adverse to bargaining. I got a $400 strat for $330 without too much problem. It'll be sad to see them go. They were a real musos shop.

  • When will they officially close down. im busy this week :s
Also do we take a further 20-40% the price on the website?? or is the red price it?

  • sad to find out they are closing down :(

  • ad now shows 40-60%
