Seeking a Bargain Prepaid SIM Card with 5-10GB Monthly Data for Parents (Yearly Upfront)

Hello fellow forum members,

I'm back with an update in my quest to find a budget-friendly SIM card for my parents. Their usage pattern has shifted slightly, with more frequent use of social media, music streaming, and video watching, which translates to about 5-10GB of data per month. We still desire a prepaid plan that lasts for a year and offers reliable reception. Any guidance or recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Here's the refined criteria:

  1. 5-10GB Monthly Data: Given the increased usage in social media, music streaming, and video watching, we're now looking for a SIM card with a monthly data allowance of 5-10GB.

  2. Prepaid Plan (Yearly Coverage): Our preference remains a prepaid plan that covers them for an entire year for simplicity.

  3. Decent Reception: Ensuring consistent reception in our area is still a top priority for effective communication.

  4. Budget-Friendly: While we need a reasonable data allowance, we still want to keep costs in check.

If any of you have encountered SIM cards or providers that offer such plans with a suitable monthly data allowance, please share your suggestions.

Thank you once again for your assistance, and I eagerly await your recommendations!

  • Decent Reception … which of the following provider has the best reception at their location? Vodafone / Telstra or Optus? Another important question, do they need to call overseas?

They all have decent reception. I am looking for decent reception when traveling around Sydney. They don't need to call overseas.

  • I've just got the Coles Mobile sim. Cost $120 for 365 days. 60G data, unlimited calls and txts. I'm very happy with it so far. No difference in reception to my post paid Optus sim. You get the option of keeping your old number and includes some international calls.

I've only been paying $99 for my 12month plans for the last few years, switching between Kogan Mobile (Prepaid SMALL 120GB), amaysim 60GB Plans and Coles Mobile 60GB depending on which goes on sale.

Worth mentioning Amaysim regularly offer retention bonuses around renewal anniversary. Most recently got 25% off and double data.

    • I will also vote for the Kogan plans. All three kids run them with no issues around Sydney.
Whilst they couldn't call when overseas, they could still receive SMS (they replied via WhatsApp off our hotspot)

If they shop at Woolies I think you can't go wrong with getting the card from there. 2 separate Woolies rewards card then you get 2 x 10% off 1 shop a month

    • If i have everyday extra already does the mobile add an exra 10% off shopping each month?

2x 10% off shopping in total each month?

    Catch Connect is cheap

Check out woolies and coles catalogs to see what yearly plans that sell and research them so when they go on special you can buy them.

Catch Connect and Coles Mobile are the best for full year with minimal inclusions. Coles Mobile infact has a good amount of overseas calls as well…both Optus network and decent reception

    • Coles also has up to 50GB data rollover while Catch has none. Keep auto recharge off and they'll both usually offer a discount to renew at the end of the plan, though we had 2 Catch plans, one got a discount offered and the other didn't (so moved to Coles which was on sale, though slightly more than Catch)

  • Coles Mobile is currently on sale, ends 26th September. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/796798 . Get it direct from the Coles Mobile site. $119 for 120GB. Works out to $9.92 for 10GB per month, so $19.84 is your parents' total monthly mobile plan cost. Optus network.

  • Coles Mobile on sale is excellent value.

  • Check out finder.com.au, sometimes have 50% off for 6 months. Woolworths at $170 on telstra network with 10% of one shop a month is ok if you use Woolworths.

  • Looking for a data plan for my kid, 365 day is fine BUT only if the data is given monthly, i dont want him to accidentally smashing all the data in 2 months by accidentally leaving youtube running or something haha
