Security System for Vacant Home?

Hello OzB,

Hoping someone can recommend the best value, most effective ways to deter and monitor for intruders in a vacant home.

The home is my parents' old family home, it's vacant and getting prepped for sale. In the meantime, there have been two break-ins in the last week - junkies had themselves a couple of parties in the house and thankfully a neighbour called the police. We are getting a locksmith to quote on adding bolts to the windows as the latches aren't keeping these people out. But I want to make sure a break-in isn't attempted again and that the house isn't damaged.

Things I'm considering:
* Motion-sensitive floodlights (doesn't help with alert and response?)
* Motion-sensitive security camera that sends alerts and media via SIM (is that a thing?)
* Back to base alarm eg ADT or Chubb (are they reliable? Are they good value, particularly in a temporary situation like this?)

Criteria - the kickers:
* The house has power but no internet.
* Lack of people on the ground: my parents are old and not really mobile or with it, and I live in a different state. I could probably fly over to do an install if it was basic enough, but the ongoing solution would need a third party alerted to attend. I am also happy to get a third party to install if it's cost-effective.
* [Edit:] The house is empty and unfurnished at the moment so it's not set up for someone to move in temporarily, Airbnb or housesit.
* We want to sell the house ASAP so don't really want to spend that much, especially on a permanent solution, but do need to make sure it's not damaged before sale (or settlement, I guess).

Am I on the right track? Am I overthinking it? Please let me know what you've done in a similar situation. Thank you!

      Don't think deodorant will help

      • They both smell the same.Either will scare off the average human. Won't impact a cougar, though.

  • put a radio/ timer lights.

could also do a mobile hotspot, with basic door sensor/camera.

See if you can get a scarevrow

    • fake cameras with blinking lights
    • fake alarm box visible on the outside
    • visible "property is protected by CCTV and alarm" stickers,
    • lights on timer
    • cheap phone and month to month data on a sim card to get internet at the property to run cameras, apps or alerts

In a sellers market with so many homeless?
Just sell it with a markup to cover property management till sale.
Things that tight you can't whack power on temporarily to drive security system?

The OP said "the house has power but no internet".

        My bad. Easy fix then.

  • When you in the market , you wouldnt know how long it take. I would just signed up for internet and put a ring doorbell.
And some insurance doesn't cover when property unattended for long time.

  • try pocket WiFi?

I'm not sure what you really want then….. If an alarm goes off, you can't do anything. Sensor lights don't really stop people, just gives them some light to see ;)

We want to sell the house ASAP

    Do this then.

    rent it out on airbnb

make it cheap so that its always full

    no internet

It'd probably cost less to get the internet on until sale time than buying a 4G/5G modem and paying 4G/5G costs.

  • Good neighbours

Only way to stop it is to stay there.

    More locks just increases creativity.

  • It's should have NBN infrastructure though, right?

A lot of broadband providers don't have setup fees or contracts anymore, so it shouldn't be too exy to sign up?

Can you pay your neighbours for Wi-Fi? You could go 4G cameras but they're pricey; 4G/5G hotspots are flaky and need to be power-cycled periodically.
Low cost camera solution: Wyze Cam v3 with window mounts

  • Get a House Sitter In return for free accommodation, there are professionals that do this. MadPaws has insurance

  • Selling it would mean you have it in the hands of a local real estate agent?
Can you not kindly ask the real estate agent to check on it for you since he/she has the keys???
