Wondering if this TV is a good buy for that price? I haven’t had a OLED before but from what I can gather from Rtings & others, it’s a pretty solid TV

It is a great TV. If picture quality is important to you then this is the way to go.

Tip: I strongly recommend switching the menu to 'Apps only mode'. Cuts down on all the screen clutter / advertising of shows that you don't have subscriptions for.

  • It's a solid price but not a Bargain with the capital B.

  • The issue is it's a very good unit, but they will run out eventually. (think A80J is even better but rarer now) Quite the balancing act picking the timing to buy.. Maybe do a ring around of a few of the major retailers (start at GGs) and try to track down some stock somewhere and ask for a better price. Or be comfortable in knowing if this is the one you really want, it's not a shit price. Would be good to have it a cpl hundred less, where it bottomed out a few months back.

    • Yeah pretty much somewhat awkward time to buy but having had a look what the retailers are offering atm, it seems the best TV at that price, although not the best price it’s been

Think I’ll grab it while I can

      • May as well. Maybe at order ask them to refund the difference it it drops a lot in the next month. You never ever know. It's worth asking.

  • You can't go wrong with a Sony OLED — Google TV so you can install apps like VPN to easily switch streaming libraries (a friend recently bought a LG G3 and discovered the app selection is extremely limited), and supports Dolby Vision.

    • I'm also considering A80k but in 65" vs a Samsung but there doesn't seem to be any A80k's in the size around anymore?

My other choice is the Samsung S90C but for the very same reason (want VPN access and other apps), I have been hesitant.

However, my question is can't a Firestick (currently $49 for the 4K Max) be a workaround?

      • I am also ready to pull the trigger on the a80k but they're discontinued same with the LG C2. Im coming from a Sony with the XR processor and it works great with upscaling smoothing etc.

Heres a link where you can purchase directly from sony. I think I might hold out for a A80L sale.

The firestick is great. Super zippy and has loads of apps similar to Google TV. If you would like Google TV then you can get Google Chromecast. Firestick uses its Fire OS and Chromecast uses the same OS as the TV's do. So yes these are both work arounds but from my short use (Bought Dad one for a Caravan TV) and research you won't be able to access your USB drives from the TV.

Edit: I'm stupid and realised you said 65"

      • Yeah a streaming box/stick would be a workaround (I use an Apple TV 4K) but doesn't beat the convenience of an installed VPN app.

What I also like about the Sony A80 OLEDs are the built-in sound quality and the stand configuration which allows of easy placement of soundbars.
