The cetrecom one was the real deal for those who got it

      ?

  • Does anyone have a printer like this? Is it just good for documents or can it do photos for general use as well?

    • Yes, I have the 2710 I think it is. Haven't done any photos but normal images work fine, documents are good.

    • +1

They can do photos. Pretty decent if you use photo paper, but not as good as a proper photo lab or photo printer because they only use 3 colour inks. Resolution is fine, it's just the colour gamut is a bit limited if you are used to 'proper' prints. Totally fine for kids and casual use.

      • Any issues with print heads drying out if you don’t use them?

Also, does it truly have a ‘tank’ that you can fill up from a bottle of (suitable) ink?

        • +4

Yes. There isba proper tank that you top up with ink bottles. Each bottle costs 10-15 and I refilled my first printer at about year 3 of ownership.

This was with school aged kids printing whatever they wanted.

        • +2

Just leave the printer plugged into power and turned on, it’ll periodically purge ink on its own to keep the print head wet.

          • @AustriaBargain: Where does it purge to? Saw one printer that only had a basic sponge that was left in the bottom of the unit and mess could go anywhere. Real design flaw.

            • @Savvy shopper1111: It goes into a sponge.

            • @Savvy shopper1111:

Saw one printer that only had a basic sponge that was left in the bottom of the unit and mess could go anywhere.

Except that it can't go anywhere except into the sponge. That's the whole point of the sponge 😁

              Real design flaw.

Not a design flaw, this is a normal way to collect surplus ink in a printer.

    • Good, the higher end model uses 6 inks and those prints look a lot better. Even then though, those prints can fade,

      • The pro 100s uses eight tanks 💪 they cost like $28 each though 😵

        • Yes I was referring to higher not top like the 8500, but yes good point 2 of those inks rarely go on sale.

    • Have the bigger brother 2850 and is is pretty pathetic; I regret the day I bought it.
Very slow at printing and very, very slow at scanning.
I have still yet to figure out how to increase the colour density of printing.

      • There's no way to increase colour saturation short of using proper photo paper. If you use plain paper colours will always be washed out.

5 ink printers won't help either, until you start using proper paper.

      • I actually like the 2850 but I guess it is more for simplicity for kids and more straight forward jobs (I haven't had to scan photos or anything)

As an IT guy who's been using Epson Eco-Tanks for 5+ years (as well as Brother laser), I would recommend either wholeheartedly.

(I would be curious what the problems regarding drivers are supposed to be)

      • +1

I agree that software for consumer printers can be a bit bloaty, but that problem is easily solved by simply installing the drivers only…

AirPrint is an absolute godsend too. It still amazes me how easy it is to print from a mobile device.

      • -1

I wouldn't trust any IT guy who endorses any inkjet.

    • +4

These printers suck. Why? Trust me bro, I'm an IT guy

Nice reasoning. These have been my longest lasting printer without any issues(apart from requiring print head cleans after not being used during extended periods). I've already saved heaps on ink. Cartridge printers can go to hell.

    • Yea what was driver issue?

  • +7

You can get it cheaper from epson if you dont mind a refurb

    https://www.epson.com.au/shoponline/shop/BrowseProducts.asp?…

    • +1

We bought an ET-4750 refurb direct from Epson and we've been super happy with it. Its print counter has almost reached 10,000 pages and we've never had an issue with it.

  • Its a four color so not so good as photo printer, and since it an inkjet, speed is about 3 page per minute as oppose to 30 page per minute for laser printing.

    • +2

True but unlike a laser its safe for use without ventilation.

  • And then each bottle is $9.60 on sale from amazon/jb hifi.

  • +1

Guys remember to keep your printer on, or the ink will dry!

    • Won't the ink dry regardless? The ink is a pigment suspended in a solution, which will evaporate over time. And whatever ink is inside the tubes that feed from the reservoir could also dry up and cause clogs if you don't print often enough.

      • +1

I'm sorry I meant the printer heads may clog due to lack of use.

      • Did you mean dye rather than pigment?

    • How? I've only turned it on whenever I need to print for the past 3 years. Still works till today.

      • +1

        How often do you print?

        • It varies. Sometimes every alternate day, sometimes once every 1-2 weeks. Sometimes I have a month break due to the holidays, after which I have to do a quick print head clean but that's it.

  • +1

I have an ecotank 3700 and find it really cheap to run. Duplex is handy. Print quality is acceptable but not laser quality. Colour prints are vibrant.

  • +1

If not printing photos is there a point in buying this sort of printer over something like that Brother colour laser that's popular on OzB?

    • +1

Shitload cheaper than regular ink jet printers. $10 for something like 4500 pages instead of $70 for 300 pages with the 645xl ink cartridge

    • +1

Some people don’t have good ventilation, laser printers are terrible for your health that is why you need good ventilation.

    • My take absolutely yes. My last Brother colour laser failed when a bit over a year old (paper jam every time, couldn't sort it), took it to the ewaste and bought an Epson 3800. Not going back to lasers. Only downside of the ecotank is that I found if printing double sided I need to use 100gsm paper which does cost more. I think it's costing me less per page even with cheap 3rd party toner in the Brother but I haven't actually worked it out… So far anyway it's a lot less hassle, much smaller, the next set of ink bottles takes less space than spare cartridges, less waste (cartridges), etc.
PS. this one doesn't do double sided printing.

  • Would this be an overkill for someone who doesn't print that much often?

    • I definitely wouldn’t buy an inkjet if you don’t print much, you’re liable to screw up your printer when the print head dries out. I’ve been bitten a few times by that and I stick to using laser printers now.

      • +2

These printers don't need regular printing- if you just leave them on or power them up occasionally, they seem to run a little maintenance routine by themselves.

My previous Eco-Tank last printer I had for 4 years and it was fine.

    • Only if you like paying 40$ for a cartridge that lasts 500 pages. An ecotank is far cheaper to run.

  • +4

I've had this model for 12 months. There's no going back to the regular inkjets! Recommended.

    • Does the white start to yellow over time?

  • +1

Been using the 2810 for 3 months… got it for the same price from Amazon…so far im v happy with the purchase.

    • How the photos look like on the photo paper?

      • Pictures are okay, but i guess in my case it had to do with the paper. Using a photo paper wd give better results..i have mostly used it for docs.

  • +2

Why ink and not laser printer? Can someone explain what’s the benefit of going with ink?

    • +4

Photo quality is the main reason from what I can gather. Try printing a photo with your home laser printer (without spending $$$) and you can see how dismal the results are.

    • +1

Cost is the other reason. A decent colour laser printer will have 4 toner cartridges costing $100 to $150 each.

However if you are printing a lot, they are more cost efficient in the long run.

  • Does this printer auto duplex?

  • +3

This model doesn't include air print.

    • +2

Just realised this and cancelled my order. The cheapo HP printer I got years ago and want to replace has air print, didn’t even occur to me this wouldn’t!

    • Yep - the reason why I got the 2850 about a month ago instead (for $366 - needed to get asap). Full list of Epson that can air print: https://www.epson.com.au/connect_solutions/apple-airprint.as…

  • I’m tempted with this, still rocking my 2010 HP B110a, only twice had to clean the print head manually with ethanol. Was moving the table it was on the other day and it dropped onto a concrete floor, busted the fold down tray. Powered on but said printer head malfunction but pulled it apart and cleaned the print head again and it’s working, some super glue fixed the tray hinges.
Everything still works perfectly and can scan and AirPrint. Got it free from Apple with my 2010 iMac 🖥
I buy aftermarket cartridges but still more expensive than this epson by the looks of it.

  • I bought this a month ago and it's been good so far. I've printed a lot of documents and it's done that no issue. There's a handy app to print directly from your phone too.

  • For the same money you can get a popular Brother MFC-J4440DW from Officeworks! It has lcd screen and also does duplex printing! The last time they even included a second set of inks in the box!

  • You don't like the printing speed and noise compared to a laser printer.

  • +1

I have the ET-2800 highly recommend I paid over 500 a few years ago. Bought extra ink and still haven’t used what came with the printer. First time install is a massive pain make sure you download and install drivers separately the all in one downloader never finishes for me. As noted they can dry up/clog if not turned on for a long time (or only doing black and white all the time) but easy to fix in Windows

  • +2

From what I've seen online, Epson printers like to pop up a message telling you the printer has reached the end of its servicable life after the waste ink pads are deemed full by a waste ink counter. It's a dead switch designed to make the printer useless - even the ecotank ones. Older models could be reset but I don't know about the newer ones. Plenty of Youtube videos with links to malware masquerading as resetters. Printer companies have lost their mind. Anyway perhaps someone with first hand experience can tell you whether it's actually something you can reset, how to do it, and whether it costs money.

    • This sort of planned obsolescence is why i'm so hesitant to buy another printer, despite owning one being very handy. I'm so sick of the DRM/malware.

  • +2

Using the Epson ET-3800 since January. $549 Officeworks. Up to over 8,000 pages on the counter, nearly all double sided colour duplex (book printing) on 100GSM high quality paper. Full coverage on many pages (colour photos etc, and only started using some of the 3rd bottles at $14 each for the colour) 500 in the tray.

You can adjust the density for duplex printing depending on the paper and quality you want. Using System print dialog allows you to adjust many things to your preference.

Borderless photo printing on good glossy photo paper looks great In my opinion. And I use Matte card photo paper to print the front and back covers of each book, ready for pressing, glue and cloth binding.

It has a maintenance box for waste ink $16.00. Which is almost due for changing 1st time, just by sliding out the old one and pushing in the new one at the back of printer. So the waste tank is serviceable and cheap.

If left for a while, I just print a nozzle check, then it cleans the heads if required. Takes a couple of minutes. There is also a power clean function which purges the lines and print head. Never used it, and it uses a bit of ink to do that, but the ink is so cheap.

Definitely got my money's worth so far if it broke tomorrow.

I would not buy this model though for my needs.

    • I forgot to mention I did buy a laser first. Brother Wireless Colour Laser MFC Printer MFC-L8690CDW.

Massive heavy printer, It arrived quite damaged and only managed to spit out a few pages along with bits of broken plastic falling out of it before I returned it for the EcoTank.

Quality was good, but the cost of replacement toners would have cost a relative fortune compared to the Ecotank.

I feel very lucky in a way the couriers smashed it up in transit, or I would have spent a lot on toners already.

I would actually love to have both these model printers at once. They both do different things at their best.

  • I bought this a few months back here's my Ted Talk:

    Pros
    * Prints colour and reasonable quality
    * Very cheap ink

    Cons
    * Doesn't do AirPrint and you need to install drivers to get it to work
    * Needs app on iPhone to use it from your phone (no AirPrint)
    * Doesn't do double sided printing
    * I wish I did more research before buying it

Overall it's a good printer that does what it says, but it's very expensive, I assume to cover cost of cheaper ink and missing a lot of feature similar normal ink printers have a lower cost.

    • Have you done photo prints?

      • Not yet as I don't have any photo paper so can't comment
