Keep in mind that this is 11th Gen i7, so two generations behind current laptops.

    • +10

…..and only one generation behind the current SP9, not exactly a huge issue

      • +2

especially with this spec, should last a good 5 years at least.

      • I'm just pointing it out. Most people who spend $1500 like to get something current! For my money, I'd by a current generation Lenovo Yoga, but obviously the Surface has a nicer screen

        • +12

I'd hope most people would understand that the same spec Surface Pro 9 retails for $3500

          • +1

@dav3: The Surface Pro 9 costs two grand more and has a processor that gets hotter with less battery life.

But there's a marginal performance improvement, right? right?

            • @mantichoral: My point being this is a year older and $2k cheaper

          • +1

@dav3: This is why I jumped on it

        • +5

For most people’s use you’ll find this will exceed for many years. Combine with better format than most competitors it’s a great deal.

I used to be all about the latest specs but you’ll find in actual practice it’s marketing spin most of the time and other than synthetic tests you’d barely notice a performance difference in real life closer than 5 years apart.

    • +5

11th generation i7 is actually the one to get from a battery life and heat perspective. 11th gen typically has a base power draw of 12W, while later generations have a base power draw of typically 20W or up. Lots of added heat, not much added speed.

Worth reading Intel's own processor specifications for TDP thermal design and base power.

      https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark.html#@PanelLabel…

Intel really can't do thin chassis, something Apple realised to its cost years ago.

  • Does this one have Lte?
Doesn't say on the specs but I had the impression that all Surface Pros had Lte…

    • You'd be wrong

    • Surface for Business models can be optioned with LTE. They also generally come in at a much higher price point.

      • Very rare to see anything other than Surface Go or Pro X with LTE on the used market unfortunately

  • +2

Lack of ports :(. Good price though

  • -1

time to buy a new keyboard.

At $1300 surely it comes with a keyboard?

    • +1

You've always had to buy Surface keyboards separately, I guess because they have different options like leather, colour etc.

I assume OP comment is also because from the SP8 onwards they changed the form factor, so the old keyboard covers no longer fit.

      • it makes sense to separate the keyboard and the chassis if they have different lifecycles.

Which lasts longer, the Surface keyboard or the Surface?

        • Keyboards get grubbier quicker, but generally keep working up until the screen cracks when you drop it… the you buy a whole new everything. It’s a nice idea in theory, but the reality rarely plays out that way for many users.

    • +1

At $1300 surely it comes with a keyboard?

Well that didn’t take long, beat us all to it!

  • +12

For what it's worth - don't buy a Surface. I've got the Surface 7 pro and it's a dog of a computer. Can't get to the insides if the SSD fails or the battery needs a facelift. It's designed to break and be thrown in the bin. It's a crap computer. Very slow. Can't replace SSD to speed it up. Battery is average. High spec processor but barely uses it - I'm guessing it gets throttled quickly due to the crap cooling system. My 4th gen desktop i7 was faster than my 11th gen i7 Surface Pro when processing files in audacity.

Avoid. Not a bargain at half the price.

    • fwiw the microphone and webcam are good - and the screen is nice. That's about it.

    • +16

Surfaces from the 7+ onwards let you get into the SSD easily and replace it, and it's no surprise that an old desktop CPU beats a low power mobile CPU (which is 10th gen in your case).

      They're not a workhorse, they're a compact 2-in-1

    • +3

If you've got the 11th gen in your SP7 then you've got the SP7 Plus which should have a removeable SSD.

      • This is bloody excellent news.

    • +1

Totally agree with everything you mentioned. My works uses them and they're shit. I can't believe how much they go for. So many better options out there, for less even!!! So slow and underperforming

    • +2

      All true

Surface devices are the ultimate in planned obsolescence e-waste

No idea why anyone would buy this $1.4K unit with a CPU 2 generations old when you can get this Lenovo for less

I bought a Lenovo Yoga 7i. Fans whirred at maximum even when sleeping; only hibernation would stop it. After three support calls from the Phillipines installing every driver they could think of to try and fix the fans, I got it refunded.

    • +3

Surface as a product concept is a very good idea from Microsoft but the hardware implementation is completely rubbish. Have had 2 Surface Pros in the family - one crapped itself out and the other one had a major issue with the screen, both happened after the warranty ended. Neither can be repaired. They were only used as travel laptops so not much mileage at all. Definitely not going to buy another Surface.

  • +8

I have had the Surface Pro 5, 6 and now 7 and they have been flawless, such great quality devices, zero issues and I love the look and feel of them.
I also like the improved reparability of the Surface Pro 7, 8 & 9 series, with some removable components.
Might have to upgrade, thanks for posting :)

    • +1

3 of my kids at high school have surface pros. Zero issues to date, one of them is over 3 years old, very light to carry in bags to school. Initially bought 2 Lenovo Yoga’s for 2 of them, hinges broke, dead screens, never again

  • +1

New models generally released in October, I'd HODL if the price isn't too tempting
Its annoying that as biznis/corporate/lifestyle devices the x86 Surface do not have 5G LTE.
Having to hotspot all the time reduces its appeal.

    • +2

But the new model will be >2.5x the price

  • +1

    Any good keyboard deal?

  • -1

Microsoft are scumbags. They won't allow me to purchase any more giftcards using amex discounts.

  • +3

I'm still on the SP7 and that is pretty tempting, the added bonus of slight upgrade options is pretty good too. Maybe I can hold out for another gen.

As for those that may not have the use case for these, it's going to look like an overpriced machine. For my case where I am making extensive use of the pen, I can't use another Windows laptop in the same way, and the iPads are too limited to do what I need to do, so it's definitely a niche but it feels that niche amazingly

  • I run X1 Yoga for my daily driver, but my SP5 is amazing for PDF reading and annotation. The fact it can also comfortably run at least 80% of the rest of my workflow is essentially mind-blowing. That said, I usually run the gauntlet of refurbs, so I can understand why some would find the pricing more than a little steep.

  • Finally can upgrade from my SP4. I would be surprised if there are many of these left and at this price by the time SP10 is released

  • I've got one of these for my work, fantastic machine.

  • +1

This went quickly, now who can link a decent price for keyboard?

Damn, got all the way till payment and then out of stock :-(

      Back in stock

    • +2

seems like there is still stock

      • +1

Yup. I see stock on my app. Don't need a second one…

        • Showing available but I can't add it to cart, it comes up with a message saying there's no stock

          • +1

@realJuliusCaesar: Looks like a few have popped back in stock in case anyone's still watching this thread. Managed to nab one a moment ago after checking back in. :)

  • Great just got one :-)

  • +1

Just got one, always want a portable laptop that is touch screen with high refresh rate !

  • I jumped onto this a year ago, same specs, regret it massively, will be going back to Apple once the depreciation on it is over.

    • Why and what’s wrong with your surface ?

      • Always runs hot, is slow, and keeps crashing.

        • +1

I had the same experience with a surface pro 9. It is not a refined product and has many obvious issues

I previously had a SP4, SB2, SB3, SG2. In essence almost the same things i did not like about the SP4 and the other Surface devices are present in the SP9, namely:

          • The device is almost always hot and running the fan if there is any moderate CPU activity. Under these conditions, The battery lasts maybe 2.5 hours max with 120Hz mode. If there is any prolonged sustained load the device gets ridiculously hot. This is with the "better performance" setting. if you change the setting to "recommended" the CPU performance drops off a cliff and the device is noticeably laggy. To quantify this effect i ran some Geekbench 6 test and the score on "better performance" on battery is 1870/7312. In "recommended" it is 860/4105. For comparison my M1 macbook air gets 2371/8360 and genuinely gets 8+ hours of battery life. To get anywhere near that with surface you have to have it throttled all the way down with battery saver which cripples the CPU even further. In the "better performance" mode the CPU draws ~20W in single core and 35W in multi core. In comparison the M1 draws about 4-5W in single core and 20W in multi-core and is still faster, with 4 less cores.

          • The screen is ok but pretty much the same as the surface pro 3 from 8 years ago but with 120Hz. Still the same limited colour space, still very reflective, even has a faintly visible touch overlay not present on more premium screens. There is even still some faint backlight bleeding which was an issue on my Surface pro 4 from 7 years ago! The screen is ok but for the price they are charging you should expect much better in 2023. Look at the iPad pro 12.9 screen which cost the same as the SP9 but has a significantly better screen in ever way.

          • The touch screen scrolling is just crap compared to any modern android or apple device.

          • On screen keyboard sometimes does not appear when selecting a text input field

          • The left edge swipe to show widgets and garbage news articles is just stupid. How often would you need to do this compared to swiping back??

I was hoping to use this as a Ipad and laptop replacement but the device is just not a good tablet at all. The touch interface is frustrating and the performance is either bad or the device gets very hot and drains the battery. Leaving any software compatibility issues aside, the Ipad is a much more refined, performant and pleasant to use device.

The main reason why this device is disappointing is the frustrating touch interface and the poor performance of the new Intel CPU. To get competitive performance they have use high clock speeds and draw a large amount of power as at lower clock setting the performance is crap. This is glaringly obvious if you have used any of the new Apple silicon devices.

I realised after buying one how shallow and limited most online reviews are. It seem no one really uses these devices extensively and most just read spec sheets and run a couple of 10 minute benchmarks and that's it. There are obvious points of criticism which no one mentions. The "reviewers" are really being too generous to intel and Microsoft for putting out these expensive products that have obvious flaws.

Despite getting my SP9 at a low price I sent it back today. Maybe in a few generations when the CPU performance and efficiency is genuinely improved and the obvious software issues refined i might look again. Don't trust most online reviews, test the device yourself!

          • +1

@qvinto: You've touched on several valid points regarding CPU performance limitations in the "recommended" power mode, usability as a tablet, and the reflective screen.

However, your assessment of the screen quality appears to be quite inaccurate. Taking the Surface Pro 8 as an example, it covers 100% of the sRGB colour space, whereas the Surface Pro 3 only managed 79%. Additionally, there is no observable touch screen overlay. In fact, none of the reviews mention it, and I haven't personally encountered it on Surface Pro 8 devices either. The screen quality is, in fact, one of the most impressive aspects of the Surface Pro 8, among others.

          • @qvinto: I never have had issues with my SP4. It's working like clockwork even now. Was even using it to run genshin with everything turned to minimum and got decent life out of it. Even final fantasy ran on it but terribly. Only when running the games did I have heat issues. It runs fine with office applications.

  • Super quick delivery. Just received mine.

  • This was briefly (about 1hour) $1067 on 22nd Aug after 17% coupon. Managed to buy one with discounted gc and 5mins later by the time I shared to friends or post it here, the price went back to $1616 pre coupon. Got lucky.

  • anyone able to get a tax invoice from the seller? I request them to send to my email and they said they can’t

    • Just got it via eBay messages. Sucks we have to ask but they did send me one

  • Wow what a mess. Surface arrived with a cracked screen and the ebay store has taken days to reply. Said to contact microsoft support as no stock to replace or I can refund. So Microsoft support is claiming that the ebay store is unofficial/fake and nothing to do with Microsoft. Seems to be a common misconception by a lot of these overseas support staff. So they are telling me the screen cannot be fixed under warranty. Im still trying with different agent as I dont want to return it, as no chance I'll be able to get another at this price if there is even any stock

    • But on the ebay it is written that it will come from microsoff (items sold directly from brand)

      • Yeah. Its a sh$t show. Customer service doesn't seem to have a clue. They sent me this link https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/surface/buy and said ebay MicrosoftAustralia store is not on it. Even showing them the bit that says on the page "Shop with confidence. Direct from Microsoft. Item sold directly by the brand." They still were saying its not them. Then I had to show them it was shipped from them. My case has been escalated high up. Showed them multiple posts on their own forums that surface 7 and 8 have spontaneously cracked before too. Also had to keep mention consumer law and warranty would apply regardless of where it was bought from. The brand/company is responsible for a failure in their product, not just the store that sold it.

      • I ordered this deal and the keyboard from Microsoft direct. Arrived in different boxes but same courier. They are the same. Sounds like your experience sucked. My pro 8 is running fine

      • To update, just heard back from Microsoft and they said the escalation team refuse to accept the warranty. They said most likely damaged in transit even though the box was undamaged. Said to return to "seller". They still refuse to accept that the ebay store is anything to do officially with Microsoft. So I guess you buy at a certain "risk" from the ebay store. Now to try to return the item. Based on the negative feedback, that looks like it is going to be an ordeal in itself too😭

  • +1

Final update….had to escalate with Ebay as no response from Microsoft ebay. Ebay emailed me a return postage label. Return address is Quantium Solutions (Australia) Pty Ltd , 395 Pembroke Rd North, Minto, NSW 2566. Looks like this company provides "Low-cost and low-risk eCommerce logistics solution that does not involve a costly infrastructure set-up." So potentially thay have a deal with Microsoft to provide the ecommerce and logistics. Can't believe they are using ebay as the platform! They are "a turnkey solution covering warehousing, fulfilment, last mile delivery, and returns management."

So technically the store is not directly Microsoft but it would appear they have a contract with Microsoft, Hence why the Microsoft Support people have no idea about the store. Also explains the appauling customer service from the ebay store as you are dealing with Quantium and not Microsoft. Ebay said my refund would be processed as soon as it is received

  • Yeah.. i've always thought that. i knew it was some sort of third party as the items purchased off "Microsoft eBay" would never show under your Microsoft account. Still.. i've never had issues like you have. My SP8 has been flawless.
