Recommendations for an All Round Good Tyre?

Hey OzBargain, I drive a corolla hybrid and have been on the stock Bridgestone Ecopia tyres.

They sometimes slip in the rain, I pump them to the manual's rating (35 psi front, 33psi back) once a month, so I've been thinking of replacing them.

Budget isn't too important since tyres last long enough for me not to care too much. I'm mainly aiming for comfort and quietness + fuel efficiency, I'm not sure if they are a contradictory combo.

Any good recommendations? Thanks!

EDIT: I mainly do city driving, very little highway driving

I beleive all tyres are ALL ROUND.

      • May I introduce you to bold text.

Just add ** on either side of the word(s) you want.

        • Thats not bold thats jv

I've had great success with spirited driving with:

    • Goodyear assurance triple max

    • Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus

    • Thank you, which one have you found is quieter and which one has better fuel economy?

      • +2

Both the same to be honest. If you drive a 10 year old Mazda3 or civic then no tyre is going to fix that shit up.

        • haha youre absolutely right. Thank you

        • but a 5" exhaust tip will

+1 for Turanza Serenity Plus. I had them on my old Corolla and will aim to get them for my current Corolla if they make them in 225/40/18

      • Only issue is they pick up rocks

        • Don't all small passenger tyres do that? My current car (purchased brand new) had rocks in its tyres already when I picked it up; they're Dunlop SP SPORT MAXX

I also enjoy the serenity plus, doesn't seem to have any downsides, they seem to last ages as well.

I got 100k kms out of a set. 90% regional highway driving and rotated every 10k kms. Great value in that regard.

    • I've had great success with spirited driving with:

But but but. The OP drives a Corolla.

      • So do I. Your point?

FWIW, the tyres easily lasted 50K km over five years but I think I would have had to replace them had my car not been written off.

        • .> So do I. Your point?

Umm, Touchy hey? Spirted driving in a Corolla. I'd like to see that. My four cylinder 4WD would win in a 0 to 100kph drag.

      …. spirited driving …

Is this where you have a cross hanging off the rear view mirror?

How has JV not commented that all good tyres are round?

    • +1

Or all round tyres are good

    • +4

Because jv is well aware that not all tyres are round.

      • Those are standard Canadian tyres.

Comfort, quiet and fuel economy more or less go hand in hand. The challenge is if you want good handling and fuel economy or quietness because you need a stickier tyre for handling but a more hard wearing tyre for the other two.

I’ve never gone wrong with Michellin in any category.

    • Thank you for this, I drive like a grandma 80% of the times, and may be a bit spirited in the other 20% (probably running late as usual). Do you have any michellin recommendations that doesnt have bad handling but is mainly fuel saving and quiet?

      Appreciate it

      • I have Michelin Pilot Sport 4’s on my car which given your requirements would be overkill for what you want (well the entire Pilot Sport range). They are a performance tyre meaning they grip well for a road tyre but the downside is more friction so more road noise and less fuel efficient.

It’s been a while since I’ve not bought performance oriented tyres but the Primacy range was good.

        What are your tyre sizes?

      • Was very happy with Michelin Primacy on a Renault Koleos. Quiet, nice ride, slow wearing.
How old are your Bridgestones - they might have gone hard which causes slipping.

How do people survive? Why did smart ppl waste so much time making life easy only for this to be the norm? Posts like this fight the good fight for limiting population expansion to an IQ based system

In the OP’s defense I really hate dealing with tyre shops so getting information beforehand and knowing what I want is much easier. That way I can just price shop.

      • +1

There's literally hundreds of accurate ,up to date tyre sites with prices, reviews and outlets listings, inc bookings.
But hey everyone online has the exact same opinion on tyres and oil, and it only takes 30 seconds for an entire forum to agree on the same product, innit. Nobody needs to contact a tyre place until they have made their mind up.
People are incapable of educating or informing themselves even with boundless info on tap. If not now, when?

I wonder what 'irrational fear of a tyre supplier / fitter' is called? Hmm

The correct answer in this case is probably the most expensive tyres money can buy, with the shortest life and most uncomfortable ride. . Because that comes with a free, but priceless, life lesson

        • C'mon, we both know that "what's a good tyre" has never been asked anywhere on the Australian Internet before. It's not like there are forums and things that are indexed by search engines.

  • Well that was fun.

    • What did I miss?

    What did I miss?

Thirteen minutes of Heckle and Jeckle going at each other hammer and tongs with insults and accusations.

Surprised if they both aren't in the penalty box.

Nah, not tyres. Two hot heads just going at each other over each others posts.

I assume you are driving the hatch back. The sedan is 36/35 (front/back) and even skinner tires.

If you are pushing those tires so hard it is slipping then you are driving the car wrong.

    falken or toyo

Michellin Primacy 4 is a great buy for general everyday driving.

  • Continental Comfort Contacts. Fantastic grip in wet weather, especially when there is a bit of oil residual on the road.
