Peak Design 16" Everyday DSLR Backpack Zip V2 20L $343.20 Delivered ($308.88 with New User Abandoned Checkout Code) @ Rushfaster

650

Been watching the price for the peak design zip 15's and zip 20's for a while, want a smaller EDC bag than my current 30l osprey porter.
I also want the option to convert back and forth between standard EDC and camera load outs, or something in between.
I also wanted a BIFL option when spending so much - which I believe this is, with the lifetime warranty.

It's the same price as Digidirect atm (probably price matching) - but I would rather not buy from DD after a bad experience with them, and they now have surcharges.
Rushfaster also has 100 day return window as long as the product is not used and is returned in full resalable condition.

If you create a new account with Rushfaster, get to checkout, then abandon the cart, you should get a unique discount code that will bring the price further down to $308.88
Which is interesting, as the newsletter sign up code normally excludes peak design gear. So i expect this loophole may be closed soon…

Inb4 the haters:
Yes this is an expensive bag.
No it will not carry your burdens.

I have one of these, use it as a tech bag when we travel. They are great!

    • +4

Does it have a touch screen?

    • +10

$300 backpack has to be great.

      • +6

        yeah wth guys
$300 for a backpack?! Cost more than the return flights

        • +1

          yeah wth guys
          $300 for a backpack?!

Good quality camera backpacks do cost quite a bit.

          • @eug: So is this a camera bag? becuase it is a pretty hefty 1.5kg!

I agree good quality bags cost more but I got this slightly smaller Osprey for $35 - 2 years ago and use it everyday + been overseas and it is excellent. The bag in OP is TEN times the price o_O

            • @ChatCPT:

So is this a camera bag?

Well it is in the title. :)

The bag in OP is TEN times the price o_O

Did you have a look at the price of other camera backpacks above?

I have a Camelbak daypack like that Osprey. It is absolutely nothing like this PD backpack, or any camera backpack really. It's a little like comparing a $50 Optus prepaid phone to an iPhone or Galaxy just because they both make phone calls.

              • -3

                @eug: ok

                • +3

@ChatCPT: Not sure what you mean. By that same argument you could say that you don't need any bag. And just hold your stuff with your hands. And its free.
I find PD bags pretty expensive but if it was perfect for my needs, I might get it. Cry once rather than spend time money effort on stuff that doesn't work.

            • +4

@ChatCPT: I mean to each their own. If you don't mind just tossing all your stuff into a bag, then yes your Osprey bag is fine but there are a lot of compartments for storage and organization, cool features to the bag and also safety features.

One such example of safety is the that the laptop does not touch the bottom of the bag. It's a few cm above and held firmly in place. So if you take the bag off and drop it for some reason you aren't going to smash your ipad and laptop on the floor.

Would you put your laptop + Ipad into your Osprey bag and drop it from 1m up?

              • @MrMoo: No. I would not put my laptop + Ipad into my Osprey bag and drop it from 1m up or below

            • +5

              @ChatCPT: Apples and Oranges.

My Lowepro camera bag fits two camera bodies, each attached with a 16-35mm lens and a 28-200 lens, an extra prime lens, spare batteries & sdcards, passport, sunnies, headphones, laptop and also 1.5 litre water bottle. I can easily access these despite the 7-9kg total weight on one shoulder.

The Osprey can't do that due to lack of compartments and reinforced frames. Different target user and price.

            • +1

@ChatCPT: A high end camera body and two lenses can easily cost upwards of $6K. I wouldn’t trust a bag lacking padding and compartments to protect camera gear.

              • @no not me:

                :(

not sure whether the new version fixed the issue but i had the old one and had to sell due to the shoulder straps pivoting too easily causing improper placement on my shoulders…

    • It looked alright from the videos I saw on YouTube but obviously many of them are also prob incentivised. At least rush faster has an easy returns process it seems.

    • +1

YMMV I have the previous 30L everyday backpack and it's one of the most comfortable backpacks I have. Apart from the weight, that is. Damn thing is pretty heavy even without gear in it

      • yeah, weight was annoying… but the sturdiness really helped.

when i had the sternum straps on it held really well on a bicycle… but walking around with the sternum strap hurts somehow

        • when i had the sternum straps on it held really well on a bicycle… but walking around with the sternum strap hurts somehow

That's because the sternum straps are mounted to pull from the middle of the shoulder straps, which causes the straps to rotate inwards, and then the overly firm edge of the shoulder strap digs into your chest.

Most other backpacks, the sternum straps are attached at the very inside edge of the shoulder straps, so they don't cause the shoulder straps to do this weird rotation.

Bit hard to explain well, I hope that made sense. Here are some photos that hopefully help. Osprey design pulls the straps in cleanly, PD pulls the straps in and makes the inside edge dig into your chest at the same time.

          https://snarkynomad.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Peak-Desi…

IMO it's a very "look good over function well" design choice.

    • +1

I have the 30L V1 of this, and the shoulder strap design kind of sucks. Not because of pivots, but because the sternum strap causes the shoulder straps to rotate inwards and become massive pressure points.

From the photos, they have kept this 'feature' for the V2.

Apart from that, it's a really well thought out pack, really good for travelling, good for carrying a fair chunk of camera gear. Not at all suitable for hiking.

      • Not at all suitable for hiking.

Dang… I was going to use it on my bush walks too actually.. sigh they literally had a video of one of their staffers walking in the wilderness ahhh

        • +1

I have been using the 30L v1 for 6 years now and have used it on multiple hikes without issue. I usually take 1 full frame body and 2 L lenses, a whole bunch of accessories, tripod, rain jacket, etc etc. Never had an issue using on hikes.

I on the other hand hate sternum straps and never use them. So depends what you prefer.

Earlier this year the mag latch buckle unfortunately broke when I dropped the loaded bag into the car and it caught against something. I was very surprised when peak design customer service sent across a brand new 30L V2 no questions asked.

Highly recommend peak design stuff, been a pleasure to use.

was very surprised when peak design customer service sent across a brand new 30L V2 no questions asked.

I did hear many cases like this, and this is 100% one of the factors to me dropping $300 on ‘just a bag’

        • +1

I guess it'd be fine for a hiking bag for some people with much younger backs than mine. But I am old and crabby enough that I expect my gear to be designed for long term ergonomics- e.g. with decent hip belts if I am carrying DSLR + multiple big lenses + other stuff kind of weight. More contoured shoulder straps. I'm also a backpack junkie so I have better choices for hiking, so I consider the PD a strictly urban/flight bag, for which it's much better suited.

IMO, it's essentially a great laptop bag with a configurable interior and side access, designed to look good in a city.

As an FYI: the PGYTech OneGo is worth looking at as an alternative. I have the sling and rate it higher than my old 6L Peak Design sling in terms of functionality

Just got mine yesterday. I LOVE it

@bugsbunny: Congrats, Its a great bag. I have the 28L variant.

            • @fiveferrari: Awesome, I got the same one.

I was almost weighing up the CTB26, but I think I made the right decision.

              • +1

@bugsbunny: I personally like the look of CPL more than CTB purely on the boxier nature of it.

                • @fiveferrari: Do you by any chance have the CAP 1?

                  • @bugsbunny: Yes. I have one CAP2 and two CAP1. The second one coming tomorrow.
CAP 2 is my tech organiser,
CAP 1 is my Passport / Documents Organiser while travelling.
Another CAP 1 is day toiletries eighter in my bag or wife's bag.

Expensive but amazing things to own.

                    • @fiveferrari: Ok, I’ve been umming and ahhing but I think you just sold me the CAP 1. I’m wanting it for passports - I’ll need to fit 4 passports in so I’m assuming this will perfect for that?

Still deciding on the CAP 2 though… I already have a Thule Tech pouch that serves my needs already. Hrmm…

                      • @bugsbunny: Yea will easily fit. Its quite versatile.
Also Rushfatser are great for returns also.

                        • @fiveferrari: Thanks for your help mate. Going to grab the burnt orange.

                          • +1

@bugsbunny: My burnt orange arrived today, I fitted around 7 passports (Expired ones also) and its still easily closed.

                            • @fiveferrari: thanks for checking and confirming that mate.

you are a legend despite being a man utd supporter.

                            • @fiveferrari: btw are you happy with the burnt orange colour?

                              • +1

@bugsbunny: I love the Burnt Orange. its very distinctive. I bought a black first and this one is much better.

        • Anywhere to see these in person? The Oz retailer listed for them looks like an online store only.

Had a look at their product video, it looks really good.

          • +2

@rumblytangara: Unfortunately no. Rushfaster has a 100 day return policy which is quite good.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: Rushfaster are really great to deal with so nothing to lose. Like fivemufc said they have a 100 day return policy.

I did a lot of looking on YouTube/reddit before I decided to buy and I’m so glad I did.

            Go for it!

        • Would the CPL 24L fit a 17" gaming laptop? I know it says it fits 17" but gaming laptops are sometimes slightly thicker

          • +1

@Broomstick: I want to say Yes but I really can't tell you. I have 14 inch Macbook and it fits with space left to spare.

    • What vendor did you purchase it from? Is the shipping here reasonable enough?

  • +7

Expensive when you consider that they sell bags at Woolies and Coles for 25 cents

    • +4

25 cents is expensive when you consider they give away dog poop bags for free at the park

      • +8

That's why I do my weekly shop at Woolies using free dog poop bags from the park.

double taps temple with index finger while clicking tongue twice

      • For small shops you can save by using the mushroom bags

  • Interesting design, I used to have a similar looking black diamond daypack (for significantly lower price). Tbh i steer away from large vertical zips as when over filled the zipper will lower, but each to their own.

  • I like some of their gears, but not this backpack, it's too exposed having zippers everywhere. Nothing beats a messenger style bag if you need quick access.

    • Nothing beats a messenger style bag if you need quick access.

I think it depends on what you carry with you. If it's only a camera then a messenger style bag is quick, although if you're walking around the whole day with a heavy camera and lenses a backpack would be more comfortable.

If you want to carry other things, e.g. a jacket, your camera and lenses would be underneath it which will slow down access.

With this sort of bag you get customizable compartmentalization. The side access lets you get to your camera quickly while also giving you quick access to other items, e.g. jacket can be in the top compartment.

You don't take the bag off to grab your camera, you take it off one shoulder and swing it around so it's in front of you.

    • I believe there is a zip loop feature that helps address that but prob would get annoying after a while. I don’t like messenger style , just a personal preference ( I still have a few messenger ones though including an OG Hadley pro.

  • I use this as my work bag, I find the inside pockets are very small.

    • +1

      I don’t carry much - hopefully I made the right choice…

      IPad Pro m1 11inch
      Rg351mp or steam deck
      Wuben c3
      Plasma lighter
      Set of eating utensils
      Battery bank 20k mAH
      Xiaomi screwdriver set
      Light jacket
      Water bottle

      • It's probably a little overkill for that stuff, but you'll be happy.

There are YouTube videos of all the cool features of the bag. Take a look if you got time. If you don't you may end up missing a couple of pockets that you didn't know were there.

      • You've never told us you are a DJ

  • have the V1 for many years and not sure why the flap on V2 doesnt fold outwards? would make so much more sense when swinging it to front and grabbing something in the side pockets

  • I have the peak design backpack - I really love it. One frustration is that I wish it had more easily accessible external pockets.

  • +1

    Nice find

  • Update mine is marked shipped, I paid for express, eta tomorrow. Excellent service from RF.

  • I got one from with Krisflyer points in the middle of Covid when everything was locked down and points werent of any use travelling. Great bag, bit on the heavy side, but negligible when you think of the camera gear it can hold in there safely. Have used it to carry cameras and lenses with kids iPads on staycations and and thats not something I would want to be trusting a $35 Osprey bag with. Sturdy and secure. Completely different purposes and thus fair to have completely different prices

  • "If you create a new account with Rushfaster, get to checkout, then abandon the cart, you should get a unique discount code that will bring the price further down to $308.88"

Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but after getting to check out, I've tried abandoning the purchase by (1) removing the item from the cart; (2) leaving it in the cart and going back to the main page, and still not getting the unique code :(

    • Add the details (email etc) , then ensure to leave in cart. Then just close tab.

I’m not sure how many hours it takes. I got then code in about 2 hours yesterday.

      • ahh, do you get the code by email?
I hadn't thought of closing the tab - will try now.

    • Most places "may" give you a further discount if you leave stuff in the cart.

  • I have a 20L V1 I might sell for the right price. :)

  • Party is over. Doesn't work. Received code, applied ands "NEWK******* discount code isn’t valid for the items in your cart"

    • The signup code excludes peak design. You need the abandoned card code which should be three letter three numbers

  • Can't seem to trigger the code at all, have tried nearly everything. Anyone got a spare (assuming it's not account locked)

    • Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat :( - quite potentially it got disabled if a bunch of people got it via this method :(

      • It still worked for me when I tried this morning.

  • Why does the guy in the video go to his chair, sit down and start drinking from a cup and waste everyone's time before starting to talk?

    • yeah was a bit weird huh..and it wasnt like it was missed in post production, it was definitely edited completely with goofy half held back laugh/smile too…
probably some in-joke for the inner circle of rush faster fans.

  • I'm not sure how its working for you guys.
Received another code this morning, after the first one.
    This one is: TS7KKV**

    Still doesn't work.

Good job to those that got it to work.

    • Yes that’s the right format.
      I’ll mark it as expired.
Surprised it worked at all seeing PD is excluded from newsletter and introductory sale code issue after 1st purchase.

Hopefully some members and lurkers got a good deal on this.

      • See I had three emails this morning with the discount code with a big picture of the bag in it. Went to Rushfaster support on the online chat and they actually gave me a 10% code that would work on the bag as a one-off. Good service from them.

        • That's great service .

I am sure their margins are healthy enough to support it as well as chance to get a loyal customer/ tell others about it (like you did), good trade I say.

Im sure their statement of PD not being able to discount further is just to keep the other re-sellers happy.

        • I had the opposite experience, was told it's the lowest price on the market and they cannot give any discounts under any circumstances.

After this interaction, I did mention eBay and that discounts had been applied to other individuals - but they just brushed it off.

I'm in no hurry to get it, as I won't be traveling until March/April next year but it's disappointing that this is the case - however it is what it is - at least you got it :)

          • @eltito: Dang that’s a shame - it’s a really nice backpack imo and will give it a good testing over weekend. Imo even at the discounted price on eBay it’s worth

  • Shame, seems to have been fixed now, got the 10% off code for my cart but doesn't work on the bag anymore

  • +1

Fwiw it is currently 331.15 after ebay code AUGG17 from nofrillssydney seller

  • +2

    Anecdote:

I bought the original Everyday backpack during their 1st Kickstarter, received it in 2016. In 2021, one of the zippers broke and didn't close the bag anymore. Got in touch with them and, under their lifetime warranty, they gave a full new bag, without even requesting the old one back.

Some expensive things are worthy it.

    • That is great to hear. I looked over mine today and I have no regrets and looking at it in person to be honest I would even pay rrp for it. It’s very well made imo.
