Good headunit for the money. However, if you need android auto, you need to go to the next model up, which also has a bigger screen, which is $419 after Sony cashback

    • +3

That model is $1 or so cheaper at Ryda & also includes a bonus dash camera.

  • +1

Just be mindful that you'll wait forever for your cashback. Their T&C's say within 28 buiness days of claim confirmation but it will be closer to double that.

    • I'm guessing that you you are speaking from experience.

      • +3

Yeah, I'm waiting on 2 cashbacks which were approved on the 26th of June and the last email informed me there were "delays" with no firm time frame for payment.

        • Just wondering if you’ve had any luck yet?
I’ve been waiting 50-60 days, i’ve emailed support and got the same response about “delays” with no firm timeframe for payment.

I’m not sure if I should follow up by pushing further with them?

    • Lodge at ACCC. Might get it expedited.

Still not overly cheap given how old this unit is now.

Each to their own, but I prefer the cleaner look of a screen that fills the space.

Also, take note this unit has a resistive screen not capacitative. I find resistive screens pretty painful to use.

    • +9

The resistive touchscreen is not ideal. However, what I find annoying with most newer headunits, is they make every single button into captive touch button, instead of a physical button. I honestly find these things button less then ideal since you have to take your eyes off the road to do a simple command such as change the volume. These Sony units still have physical buttons for main functions, such as volume.

I personally believe more and more manufactures (both aftermarket and oem) are integrating captive buttons as a cost cutting measure.

      • Yeah true, each to their own. I was a bit worried about that before I got mine, however I can do it by feel still - the volume up/down is bottom left corner of the headunit, so I find the bezel corner, than can do it by feel.

Won't be an issue I imagine in many newer cars as the steering wheel controls can be retained and integrated into these aftermarket unit so you can adjust volume there, skip, pause etc.

      • FWIW when these were new we sold them in our cars, they’ve got a dial with a single press in button, not even close to the “main functions”. It’s volume and a mute button from memory.

Still better than the all capacitive touch buttons but if you’re buying it for physical buttons this model ain’t the one. You’re still almost entirely relying on a resistive touch screen - which does suck, but was much more the norm when they were a new release product.

Specs don't list radio sensitivity, therefore it may not be as good as some stock radio receivers in terms of how well it receives a radio station

    • +4

lets be honest those after an aftermarket carplay don't really care about FM radio

      Checks calendar

      Just as I thought. It's not 1996.

    • +2

doesnt that depend on your antenna?

  • I always bought Alpine, they are more expensive for a reason.

  • +1

Resistive touch screen + limited physical controls makes this a no go in my opinion. If it still had major buttons(what it has now plus forward and back buttons, source change etc) then it would be forgivable but you just gotta use that touch screen too much, I do like the user interface on this model, although it matters little if you’re using CarPlay lol.

  • How about installation? Diy or need need a machanic tech?
    Thanks

    • Can diy but are you comfortable the removal of car electrics? If not time to get aquianted!!

    • Depends on the car. But if you look up a few vids on YouTube on how to wire these up it not hard. If you want to do it super easy way, spend the extra money to get a wiring harness for your car, and a iso to a sony adapter. No soldering required, just plug and play.

The hardest part is removing your stereo, you can find how to guide online. On most cars it's not too difficult

This isn't the super easy way - it's just the normal way. Nobody should ever be soldering anything in a car audio install !

        • Everyone I know usually go for the soldering route. Some cars you can't even get wiring harness for and your only option is to solder (or crimp) your connection. Plus if your adding amps, reversing camera or even aftermarket speakers more often then not you need to solder.

      • My car was rav4 2017

I have remove the head unit before, I’m not new to diy or mod stuffs, just never replace a head unit before.

From what I gather, sony to iso harness and toyota to iso harness. In theory this should work right?
How about the mount, do i need anything extra to mount the headunit?

        Thanks all for the info.

        • Have a look here.

          https://aerpro.com/vehicles/toyota/toyota-rav4-2013#-

It should give you all the info you need.

If you got a 200m unit, you need either ATB2 or ATB2GB otherwise if yours is an integrated unit you need a FP8276

          • @nick90: What does it mean by intergrated unit?

            My unit were double din.
            Thanks

    • +1

If you need to ask you probably need to find an installer.

Otherwise, it's not too hard depending on car and what functionality is integrated. Aerpro will show you required parts. There are plenty of videos showing how to remove and install them. I swapped a unit a few years ago and didn't find it difficult. Most recent one, I used an installer to save time.

    • Autobarn sells adapter kits - buy one for your car and one for your headunit combine and you’re off to the races.

    • If you get a plug and play unit very very easy to DIY (source I got myself DIY unit from Aliexpress not this sony one ofcourse). But which ever one you choose installing the backup reverse camera is not super easy DIY. For that you would need to do a lot more work, (like understand wiring, do soldering, or wire tapping etc),

However if you get a plug and play unit (involves you getting

a car fascia specific to you car (that converts your factory double din to a standard tablet of 9/10/11/ or whatever inch the new stereo system is)
1 or multiple cable convertor (that converts your wiring harness, and radio antenna cable
Canbus, if you want steering wheel controls or other non radio functions that were in original factory radio).

both of these are a must if you want to do a simple DIY plug and play install, and will make your installation work so much easier, (aka you would only need to figure out how to take out factory radio, and plug in cable convertor, and install new car fascia and stereo in it). Can also tell you that big companies will charge you quite a fair amount for three things mentioned compared to you finding a specific one for your car on eBay/aliexpress.

  • Anyone got any tips on which facia, wiring harness (audio + steering wheel) to pair with this for an accent 2015?

  • +4

    atoto or go home …

  • How do you get these installed into an older car?

    • -2

By following these two simple steps:

      1. Remove old unit.
      2. Install new unit.
    • If you need to ask, Google - Find an installer.

  • I owned this head unit years ago and wouldn't recommend it for that money. Maybe for $150 but otherwise just spend a bit more on something more modern. Most annoying thing about it is that the "Mute" button only lowers the volume, doesn't actually mute anything!

  • Can anyone here recommend a wireless carplay/ android auto head unit?

    • +1

Asked here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774354. Ended up with the AX6000 after trying them in store. Been happy with the unit. Fast start-up time, minimal lag.

Honestly, AliExpress/ other Chinese brands are tempting. Personally, I chose to avoid it.

    • I bought an Atoto F7 Wireless for $245 recently based on recommendations here. Another $30 or so on the wiring and aerial harness. Installed it myself in and really like it.

  • Got this. Not the greatest screen quality, but does the job and the overall design of the unit is much nicer than the usual 90s rave party aesthetics car audio seems to prefer. My only issue is a bug that seems to freeze CarPlay about 30s into a call, which can only be fixed by turning the engine off and restarting it. I very rarely make or receive calls while driving so it hasn't been a dealbreaker.

  • +1

The screen quality and processor speed of the Aliexpress ones you can get for $250 are far superior and much faster than these.

    • Can you provide links?

    • Really? Can i get a link please? Also i have a nissan xtrail, do i have to get a specific model to fit my car's interface?

      • You will have to do research on your car. The head units themselves are all the same, the only difference is the frame, some sellers also provide a frame that matches your car specifically, if you can find one for your specific car, I recommend it.

The hardest part is always removing the original head unit, once that's removed, installing the new one is very easy (if you've ever built your own PC by hand, it's similar)

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005426650223.html?spm=a2…

    • You would want to wait for the upcoming discounts on aliexpress first before buying it though.

Also make sure to chat with aliexpress seller to confirm compatibility with your car, (specs and any other devices needed like 4G sim, CANBUS (if required), rear camera, AND 100% should get car radio FASCIA from seller - these are best to be bought directly from seller of head unit IMO).

  • Eonon head units are much better imo. They even come with warranty.

    https://www.eonon.com/mobile/Eonon-101-Inch-Android-10-Unive…

I've had 3 in different cars over the years. Work perfectly fine and much bigger screens and better specs and os than these.

    • Couldn’t see anything for Hyundai’s 2015 Elantra SE

  • Can't find it on aerpro, anyone know another site I can find compatible parts for 2016ford territory? Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • +2

I had the xav ax 100 for a few years. Fantastic unit. The resistive touchscreen worked extremely well and honestly was a good choice for the car. It looked OEM and had great build quality.

Resistive screens are perfect where single deliberate presses are needed. Scrolling and pinch are just distracting features when your eyes should be on the road.

The ali express units may only last a year or two. Far better off with Sony.

    • Thanks for the assurance. I agree, I never would expect aliexpress products in this category to be safer bets than Sony with warranty.

Installed mine yesterday and happy with it.

  • Pretty sure you also need to connect the phone to the front USB port too, which is kinda ugly / gets in the way in my opinion.

I installed an Atoto head unit instead and was able to route the usb port into the centre console which meant I could hide the phone away whilst driving

    • +1

No, that front port is a second port. There's one on a cable on the rear that you route to a suitable place
