Noticed people kept buying these while I was visiting the Kogan.com site today. I might have to apply for a job with them soon in their marketing dept.

  • A lot cheaper to buy them on ebay. Ship from China tho but hey they are all from China anyways.

Agree. I recently bought 10 of them from fleebay for $30 shipped. They are 3x3W which makes it 9W. One thing you've got to look out for is their illumination angle. LED's typically have a much narrow angle of illumination - almost like a spot light (around 28 deg) rather than the halogen counterpart which you can get a 60 deg light span. Took about 4 weeks to get here, but they're great. Runs cool and uses 1/5 of the energy. You've got to be happy with that.

      • Which eBay seller did you go with?

        • +1

i've used this seller in the past for led globes.
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3W-MR16-Warm-White-focus-LED-Spot…

item came in 2 weeks. These LED lights will last for very long time.

        • Thanks. Wouldn't 3W be struggling to replace a Halogen compared to the 3x3W referred to by aristocrat? 3W just doesn't sound sufficient.

        • No prob. They got other models available. You might want to check :)

I went with a seller who calls himself 100led.inc, but since your posting, I went back to ebay only to find he's got nothing in his store. If you do a quick search, I'm sure there will be other sellers selling for about $3 each if you buy a bulk of 10.

          Thanks.

I'm not sure that it's reassuring that he specialises in jewellery, watches and crafts :)

      • How did u setup the transformer?

      • Yeah, where did you get these from? Mind sharing a link?

    • some of those i've bought failed or flicker after a few months. their wattage rating is definitely overstated too.

but what makes these kogan ones any different? it's not like they make em.

  • Sorry guys,

Can this be a straight replacement for my halogen lights? Do they have the same plugs or should i get an adaptor? Thank you. Anyone care to share their happy ebay seller for these stuff?

    • Check your halogen light first, find out it's 12V or 240Vac powered, GU10 or MR16 contact.

BTW, there is no CE/C Tick approved mentioned in the spec.

      • You'd be lucky if you existing transformers will drive these. Need 12V DC, and to draw enough current for the transformer. Many are 20W minimum.

        • normal 'iron core' type tranformers will be fine.
However i agree with steptoe, if you have 'electronic transformers' they may not start with the low current draw of the led replacement.
          YMMV
I am waiting for some '5050 led' ones to arrive from china to try.
these have a wider angle of illumination which simulate the 60 degree halogens.
          Jaycar also have them.

      • If your globes don't have CE or C-tick approvals, and one catches on fire and burns down your house, your insurer will probably try to wriggle out of paying on the insurance claim. It's not worth the saving, get globes with certifications.

        • that is if you leave the light on while asleep.

        • If a fire starts in your ceiling space, by the time you notice the fire, it will be too late.

Chances are that you wouldn't even notice a single bulb failure, and there's a fair chance you wouldn't even be in the same room when it failed.

Downlights are a major cause of house fires, and while it is halogen ones that are the most dangerous, I've seen inside some devices that came from overseas. I've seen telephone handset cable used for mains voltages, and worse. There are good reasons why electrical goods require certification to be sold in Australia.

To paraphrase an old saying, "Safety standards are written in blood". They exist because someone died.

"Unlike other LED downlights, these give out a warm light, meaning your rooms look more relaxing, and less cold and sterile."

Is that marketing speak for "We only managed to source them in Warm White and we can't offer you the choice of Cool Daylight"?

    • Makes it sound like Kogan is claiming their LEDs are better as they come in warm white colour. Complete nonsense.

"Unlike other LED downlights, these give out a warm light, meaning your rooms look more relaxing, and less cold and sterile."

Well that sucks, I wanted to buy some for my dungeon.

  • I would encourage anyone buying LEDs to look at the brightbreen dr700. Costs 50 bucks, but just as good as a halogen in terms of output.

    Ebay LEDs are underwhelming

  • +2

As with Chinese LED torches, be careful with overstated wattages. I enquired about some claiming 12W. The guy replied that yes they were 12W, but only use 5W of power. I'm still waiting on shipping cost of the perpetual motion machine he is also selling ;-)

  • I was tempted but the page says:- Expected dispatch date: 19 Oct 2012

  • Im waiting for OLED :D

    • Why? OLED displays show significant drops in light output MUCH faster than ordinary LEDs, and aren't nearly as efficient as ordinary LEDs.

The ONLY place where OLEDS show advantages is in mobile phones and MP3 players, which typically get thrown away every 2 years or so, so the drop in light output is not seen during the device's useful life. And OLED displays only show energy savings in situations where the screen is mostly black.

        twas a joke

  • Almost $8 a bulb? Hardly a bargain when you can get the same on ebay for half the price, delivered.
