Purchasing Alcohol at Costco - Authenticity

Hi All,

I saw a bottle of hennesy xo wine at costco 80 dollars less than it is advertised at Dan Murphys and about 30 dollars less than anywhere else. The savings are too real to be true. The quality of clothes that I purchase at Costco isn't the same as retail stores so my concern is that I will be buying grey market alcohol at Costco.
Anyone can confirm the authenticity of alcohol (spirits) purchased at Costco?

Thanks

Purchasing Alcohol at Costco - Authenticity

    Where is Authenticity? QLD?

  • +61

its Costco not some shady alcohol shop in a side alley, they have reputation to uphold so its going to be "authentic" from the supplier, no reason why they would knowingly sell fake products at the risk of a scandal which would cause massive damage to their own brand. Furthermore they are not so desperate that they need to sell fake alcohol to stay afloat, they are literally still expanding worldwide and are a public company that shares their financials which look great right now.

Volkswagen, one of the largest, most reputable car manufacturers, would never program their cars to operate differently under test conditions and deceptively 'meet' emissions regulations.

      • +46

Well they certainly wouldn't do it a second time.

        • +3

And morons still buy from that criminal organisation.
VW should mean they're Virtually Worthless.

            • +1

@Protractor: They got done by the high court while complying with the governments standardised fuel consumption testing. A little bit different that compulsively lying and cheating to pass emissions.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: The difference is VW were the ones to get caught.

      • +5

yeah and that's exactly the point, VW knew the risk to reward and took it (due to huge profits in the global market) even after knowing it could really damage their reputation, causing a massive scandal costing them billions in fines. VW should have known better since public companies get scrutinized and investigated constantly and as a result their luck ran out. Highly unlikely Costco would follow the same path for such a paltry gain by selling "fake" alcohol, out of all things.

Tesla is doing the same (with range estimates ) but as far as I'm concerned it was expected

The testing for electric vehicles is set and undertaken by an independant body/organisation.
The testing is completed in the same manner for ICE(petrol/diesel) vehicles.

These tests give a standardised measurement you can use to compare one to the other.

People accept that the fuel testing says 9L/100km, but in the real world it is 12L/100km. Its the same for EVs.

The other issue is in an ICE car, which people are familiar with, use less fuel on the freeway. The opposite is true for an electric vehicle, leading to people complaining because they dont understand.

To be fair though, my Golf Turbo Diesel got much better fuel economy than reported.

      • Didn't Toyota and Mitsubishi get done for cheating Diesel emissions also? Even Hino a subsidiary of Toyota got done for emissions cheating.

yes, those pesky alcohol scammers are the problem at costco lmfao

Probably not legit considering hennesy xo isn't wine

    OP next post:

Are the roast chickens authentic at Costco when they sell 2$ less than woolies/coles.The savings are too real to be true. The quality of clothes that I purchase at Costco isn't the same as retail stores so my concern is that I will be buying fake chicken at Costco.

Are the roast chickens authentic at Costco

      They are awful.

    • +3

I been sous viding chicken breast and honestly I wonder if it cheaper to get the costco chickens just for the big breasts on them. Such good value, perfectly moist because they brine them properly. Only lacks flavour, salt is the only flavour they add.

      • Spatchcock a whole chicken, marinate/season, vac seal, cook for 4 hours at 60°C, crisp up under a hot grill

Maybe 'how can costco do an 18" pizza for $10 when I can only get a 12" pizza hut one for $15? Are they using geniune salami or is it just devon?

      • If someone can be hoodwinked into believing that an Italian salami pizza made with devon is the real deal then they really shouldn't be ordering that pizza topping …. or buying any deli meat whatsoever.

        • +2

So you ARE saying they’re fake pizzas!

          Bobos gonna hear about this!

          • @[Deactivated]: I don't know whether they're fake pizzas because I've not had one. Read my comment twice more.

            Who is Bobos?

      • Pizzas are crazy cheap to make, as long as you can sell enough of them to justify buying and running the oven. The only foods that come close to pizza margins are bakery stuff without meat. To get any better you'd need to be slinging popcorn from a street stand.

Rather than asking if it's authentic, they should use the term "fair dinkum"
Especially when alluding to a US business.
Therefore I say OP is not ."dinki di", aka unAustralian.

So you are questioning if it is real or not because its $30 cheaper than anywhere else? Costco buys by the container ship, they get a good discount!

Absolutely it's legit, I've bought alcohol from them before. And I disagree with your statement regarding the quality of Costco clothing compared to retail. It's exactly the same, I'm not sure why you'd even make that comment and assume it's the same with alcohol.

    • +1

The alcohol is great, however i have to agree with the clothing comment, it is more in line with factory outlet which is manufactured to lower quality.

  • I saw a bottle of hennesy xo wine at costco 80 dollars less than it is advertised at Dan Murphys and about 30 dollars less than anywhere else. The savings are too real to be true.

Shouldn't this be posted as a deal instead of a forum post.

In Australia we generally don't have the same alcohol authenticity issues that other countries may have.

As a result, the Aussie market doesn't demand a seal of authenticity (like what you get in Asia).

We all operate off the assumption that:
    - Costco works with each respective alcohol brand directly, to get their preferential pricing.
    - Because Costco works with these brands directly, we assume their goods are authentic.

To be fair, anyone can make/pass off fake goods - it comes down to how desperate are you.

Think of it another way -
The same principal applies at Duty Free shopping - they offer good prices, and they offer weird 'airport only specials' like 1L bottles vs the 700mls we get here.
The Duty Free companies work directly with brands to offer airport only specials, and special products aimed at tourists trying to use up their 2.1L allowance.

If you can proove they are not authentic, you could get $$$ by sueing them!

      • Free fake alcohol for life.

    bottle of hennesy xo

Incorrect spelling is a dead away it's fake (double s)

I thought it was the wine part.

  • Are the $1.99 Hot Dogs and Drink (with refill) fake too? Have I been scammed.

  • too real to be true

    Wake up, Neo.

  • I'm wondering if Costco's business model is that they buy things at wholesale prices in the US & bring stock over to Australia to sell & pay the needed import taxes.

The price difference could just be the usual marketing thing where people in the US get offered the product for cheaper -> for the usual marketing & volume reasons.

  • +1

Are their hot dogs made from real dog meat?

    • +1

from the taste I doubt they use anything as expensive and luxurious as dog meat.

    • 100% pork

    • Dog meat is very fatty. You'd know if you were eating it

  • +1

You got ripped a new one op

  • Nah they're fake don't buy em lol

  • The quality of clothes that I purchase at Costco isn't the same as retail stores

    Same model + brand?

Some of the clothes are a specific model, but I felt a short in myer of the same model and it felt the same

    • Funny the OP should mention it because the clothes I've bought from Costco have been excellent quality. I'm literally wearing a pair of Lee jeans that I got from there in 2018 and they're still fine. I have kirkland business shirts which I wore to work every day for 5+ years.

  • Costco don't use an Australian distributer, they import themselves

  • Look up their market cap

  • +1

OP, you do understand that Costco sell some of their products at cost price and their business profits from their Costco memberships?
All this post is affirming is that Dan Murphys is making large profits on the same product.

  • OP's had a tough life.

  • my concern is that I will be buying grey market alcohol at Costco.

I don't think it's grey market, but I do think that a number of these clothing lines are made specifically for Costco at a particular price point. They're not the same quality as what you would get elsewhere (e.g. at a name branded store). The same goes for a lot of product at DFO and other outlet stores.

Source: to me the clothes and shoes feel different, but more importantly I met someone who worked in this particular business line at Burberry.

  • Do they make Hennessy XO wine? Cognac on the other hand is probably the best XO out there.
