It looks like JB Hi-Fi is getting rid of their A7R III stocks. Pretty decent price for this model. Do note that this is the original version, NOT the later released “A7R III A” version with an upgraded LCD. But hey, that doesn’t matter too much if you shoot RAW by using histograms for reference, or if you use viewfinder more often.
I personally own an A7R II which shares the exact same CMOS. This 42MP IMX251 CMOS by Sony is superb af and has one of the best reputations in photography world. Still ranked in Top 10 at DxO Mark’s camera sensor ranking. Compared to IMX309 on Nikon’s D850 and both of their Z7 series, IMX251 has higher quantum efficiency which leads to better low light performance. Some quick yet important specs:
- 42.4MP full-frame BSI CMOS with Pixel Shift for enhanced image details
- 5.5 stop in-body image stabilisation (not as good as Canon or Nikon’s counterparts, though)
- 15-stop max dynamic range
- 399 phase-detection and 425 contrast-detection autofocus points, with continuous eye-detection (in a word, great)
- 10fps max cont. shooting for uncompressed RAW. In this setting the buffer holds ~30 images before it takes ~14s to clear (this is a HUGE improvement from A7R II which sucks at cont. shooting)
- 1.44MP 3" tilting-only LCD screen
- 3.86MP 0.78x OLED viewfinder
- Records video at highest spec of 4K 25/30P 8bit 4:2:0 100Mbps (with crop, pixel-binning downsampled from ~5K), supports S-Log2/3, HLG and other stuff..
- Pretty decent battery life with NP-FZ100. This is another huge improvement from A7R II
Christ Sony knows how to milk a product. Got this for $2950 from Digidirect in May…..2019.
