is it worth 'splurging' on one of these over the aliexpress cables? my 3m one of a few months age just passed away but i'm curious if this will have a similar lifespan. it was braided and doesn't seem to have any physical damage, fwiw.

Looks like AliExpress items come with a timer and die when they reach their 'timed lifespan' by the OEM. :)

USB-C is rated to carry up to 100W. No way would I trust an AliExpress cable to power a device at that power unattended.

I don't care about braiding or cosmetics. I want to know that the right wire gauge is being used and the connectors are good.

So I have 3 cables at home dedicated to high power devices, and they are all Anker. Otherwise I use laptop bricks and their built-in cables.

AliExpress cables are fine, I've got some toocki and essager cables that charge my phone at 65w and my laptop at 100w and have a little display that shows the charging rate. I've also got one 100w charging a powerbank in my car to run my dashcams everyday. At the end of the day it's up to the device connected to determine how much power to pull, usb-c is dependant on the handshake occuring between both devices.

I've had some of the no name brand ones and usually if the device isn't happy with the cable it pulls less power. With a bad cable my phone will pull 18w for charging rather than 65w.

I'm sure that some, even most are fine. I'm sure that not all are fine, and the small percentage chance of a 'not-fine' cable failing gracefully and still having the source and client negotiate a lower current draw is not worth it to me.

I prefer to spend a little more money on something that meets spec, than support companies that knowingly make subpar products, but that's just my take on things.

As to a previous question about longevity, in my experience decently made cables simply don't fail. I'd expect to lose a cable before it wore out or broke.

I got toocki, baseus and a essager. From the connectors i can assume some toocki components and baseus come from the same factory line (possibly). I got a transparent toocki one with wattage display which is cool - it’s 100w pd and works great, it doesn’t get hot when i use it. iPhone charger cables are spoofed (even though 3u tools shows legit, some chips show date as 2012, toocki one shows a 2019 one?) and multiple pins are removed (between 1-2 each side on some, not sure why). I definitely recommend toocki and baseus because of the cheap price and the quality that i have experienced my self. Definitely check legit reviews, etc and make sure is decent and safe before buying.

    • I buy 'branded' AliExpress cables and they've always been excellent. Anker isn't much different, they're on AliExpress too - they just market themselves better over here.

Braiding on cables is useless imo. It's just decorative half the time and makes shitty cables look premium. It's also makes the cables way too stiff

I prefer to buy silicone cables, as they're very flexible and don't tangle. And less likely for the sheathing to crack and break.

      • Appreciate your insight. Which brands are trustworthy?

Hoco silicone cables have been my go to for years- never had one stop working.

Otherwise Baseus or Anker is what I'll use.

As an anecdotal side note, my last Anker GaN charger blew up out of the box as soon as it touched the power outlet. They replaced it and I still use their stuff though…

so many charge cables and so few high speed data cables ….

    • Well I hardly need to use one for data. They are around but not on sale.

Any in the know for deals on 100W 5/10M cables? Much appreciated.

    • Yeah I need a 3m one to hook up to my 49". Hard to find for a decent price!

      • +1

You need a thunderbolt cable, not USBC

Reason: you won't get full resolution of the 49" over USBC

I’ve had a good experience with UGREEN cables on Amazon. They make some nice thin-cable and angled-connector version too.

    Similar/same price as this.

    1.8m in real measurements.

  • Can these be used for USB C monitors
