  • Do they include Google Play Store access? An Android device without it is pretty much a glorified door-stop.
(and you can't expect mum & dad users to muck about with custom roms)

    • Yes it does.

    • mine come with….. ahem ainol market too….. those like genuine paid software have to avoid it

      • +3

        Hmmm, a backdoor market?

  • Very tempting but hey, is the problem with wifi and battery in previous Ainol's tablet solved?

  • You'd better wait since the new Kindle Fire line just got released with price starting from $159, there may be further price drop in android tablets

    • i believe you would be better comparing this tablet (i have this btw) to the Kindle Fire HD 7".

Kindle Fire HD 7" vs Ainol Fire/Flame 7
      $199 USD (+shipping) vs $154 USD
IPS 1200x800 display vs IPS 1280x800 display
      16GB storage vs 16GB storage
      no GPS vs no GPS

So the question is what the extra benefit you get for ~$50 more? (my initial thoughts: build quality, brand, easier warranty and better battery - these are all hypothetical without an actual real world comparison).

Having said all that, this tablet is fantastic for the price - a 40min 720p video will eat approximately 6-8% battery using headphones at 80% brightness which meets more than my needs, touch screen is responsive and apps are snappy (but browsing large, flash-ridden websites will occasionally stutter). For $150, its pretty great value.

      • I wasn't comparing it with Kindle fire, just saying the price trend for tablets that's all.

That is awesome news. My one is still on its way to me. The only thing I really wish it had is gps (3g would be nice too) but I can cope without. After reading your little review I'm about to get /really/ impatient. :)

        • yup - when you do get it dont be too rash with upgrading the firmware - im not 100% across it but it seems that some have upgraded to the latest firmware and killed the touch input IC.

the firmware out of the box seems stable enough so i would just wait till its all clear. (slatedroid seems to have the most activity).

You forgot one major difference -
Kindle Fire HD 7 - No Expansion slot.
Ainol Fire/Flame 7 - Expansion Memory Support micro SD/TF card up to 32GB

        • +1

Also, AFAIK, Amazon bastardises android to suit their own evil needs.

        • +2

AND if you can get Kindle Fire HD DELIVERED to Australia at that price. Take Nexus 7 for example, we pay more in Google Play store for the same tablet comparing to US, and on top of that we still need to pay postage. I don't see Kindle Fire HD can land here at USD$199, and the content is pretty much US-focused. Much prefer vanilla Android.

        • that is true

        • i got my mine from aliexpress - paid for DHL shipping (total cost was $159USD) so got it within a week.

i would suggest to pay extra if there is an option for courier shipping as opposed to hong kong or china post as they typically take 2-3 weeks.

will obviously depend on the overall cost.

        • Well, I bought Yuandao (Window) N70 dual core from buysku.com (one of the OZB deals posted earlier) and I wish I didn't. The IPS screen has multiple defects and refund is not an option even if I posted the tablet back to buysku. Battery life is also poor. Regular wifi dropouts. The ICS ROM has issues.

The way these cheap tablets are partitioned, I cannot install all the apps I want. I am cleaning the cache on a regular basis to get some space back. Most of them have 1GB to 1.5GB of app space and the rest of the is basically an internal SD card. Personally, I'd rather a tablet that I can fully utilise the 16GB for apps, than just 1GB with a large internal SD (e.g. 13GB) + a microSD slot.

These tablets may be fine for children or if you mainly want to use it to stream 1080p/720p movies and browse the Internet. To really get better use of it for other things, you need to root it and do all sorts of customisation.

        • I beleive most people who get these would be more technically minded and would be rooting the device anyway. If not, you really shouldn't be buying these.

        • Apples and Oranges? Brand/OS are very different between yours and what is posted.

EDIT : oops. I'm replying to netsurfer's post

        • Spectator - im quite technically minded, but i bought this for my dad to watch his videos on (i watched an episode on it and liked it so much i ordered one for myself) and to be honest, transfer speed is ok (7MB/s), no limit on app space (however havent pushed too far, only the basics) and is pretty responsive.

I reckon you could take it further if you rooted, custom ROM and customised, but it is still very very functional right out of the box.

        • netsurfer you bought Yuandao which is totally different and not generic, if you change to Ainol you might experience a little satisfaction.

        • Yuandao/Window N70 dual core has a quad core GPU. Perhaps I am not your typical users. I like to put lots of apps/games on the tablet. After all, it runs Ice Cream Sandwich with "16GB" internal memory. It is a tablet with quad core GPU so I really would like to put a few games on it.

          I've rooted my tablet already.

Brand / OS very different amongst these cheap tablets? Please… I have mates who have Ainol tablets. You pretty much need to use a custom ROM with those.

Like I mentioned, if all you are after is watching 1080p mkvs and surfing the net, then these tablets are cost effective and the microHDMI makes it a really nice media player.

If something is not good, just because I own it, I am not going to pretend and tell people it is great.

Summary about these Chinese branded dual core tablets:

          Pros:

          • Price is low
          • Has microHDMI (normally), microSD, and USB OTG
          • Runs ICS or Jellybean
          • HDMI support is great (flexible)
          • 1080p mkv streaming is piece of cake

          Cons:

          • Warranty (lack of it); even if the seller offers it, you must send it back (no option for refund)
          • Build quality (poor)
          • Can end up with a sub-par quality IPS screen (luck of the draw - so good luck)
          • They probably used a phone based reference ROM (and has the annoying 1GB/2GB application partition, and a big internal SD card)
          • ROM can be buggy (so a lot of apps won't install)
          • Be prepared to root and install custom firmware
          • They like to cheat a bit in specs (wireless N normally means 150), they do cut down on sensors normally (no light snesor)
          • No GPS

          @netsurfer
          you forgot one other con:
          The weird naming.

  • good deal. i paid 140 for my elf 2 . decided not to get aurora 2 for 10 $ more due to its problem. using it everyday.

  • Guys does the battery heats up and is it safe to be given to kids. I am worried about the battery exploding or catching fire.

    • +10

What do you expect with names like flame and fire?

  • Have been pretty tempted to pick one of these up for awhile and deals like this doesn't make it any easier.

I probably would have bought a nexus 7 tablet already if it wasn't for considerably cheaper options like this, just hoping somebody I know picks one of these up first so I can have a play before I go and make the purchase.

  • Am I the only one getting $159.99 after the coupon?

    • Change to AUD if you are still interested.

  • be aware the current China only range (which is what this is) has some quality control issues

I like Ainol, I really do but its not surprising to me at all that an advanced tablet design like this is showing multiple incident fails in the first iteration.

    • How much do you really like Ainol? ;)

  • +1

Can this be upgraded to Jelly Bean? And is it running vanilla ICS 4.0?

    • Ainol have commited to a JB upg. but what timeframe? Chinese time scale maybe

and its running China ICS which means google play is borked but there will be vanilla distros

  • This or ipad 2?

    • iPad 2 cost 430 from apple. That is almost 3 times the price.

You are comparing eg, a Hyundai Getz to a vw golf gti or a Subaru wrx sti…..

I hope you are not trolling, but to cut it short. The ainol if you want something at that price point.

      • +1

Kind of like ainol by name, vs ainol in practice.

      get both!

This tablet is named after what happens when you eat hot curry the night before.

  • gotta be careful, ainol could be crap..

  • Hey Guys,

    Just wanted to confirm,

OTG Function Support to connect with USB keyboard,
