    Zen Gen 4 - nice

This looks like a pretty good deal. I got the LOQ Ryzen 7640HS and 3050 recently for $1,350 ($1,550 and 13% shopback). This gen runs nice and cool. Eg browsing and basic stuff, CPU's & GPU's are all under 40 degress.

    • That's decent. I've got the older 5800h model, spikes to 50-60 degrees when browsing

Work gave me a Dell Precision 3581 with a 13800H, hits 100c when browsing. It is damn fast, but I would have preferred a ryzen.

If you don't do anything too CPU intensive, you can go into edit power plan and disable boost. I had to do a registry edit to enable the boost control option. If I let my CPU boost it ends up hitting 95C and throttling, whereas when I disable the boost it only gets to around 65C under gaming loads with only a small drop in fps. If I recall correctly, the Intel CPUs can double their power draw when boosting.

@DangerNoodle: Yer I experimented with that but it blows out compile times from about 30s to 75s for a major project and is noticeably a drag on productivity. Solution is to use headphones.

The 13800H has a TDP of 45w, but is rated for 110W when boosting. Generally I find it bounces around from 3.4ghz to around 4.8ghz while it rarely goes above 5ghz.

          • @DangerNoodle: Protip: if you set the max cpu speed in power settings to 99% or below, it disables turbo boost.

        • Damn you are so lucky. My company gave me a i7-1165G7 in 14" lenovo yoga. Fans scream with just intelliJ open and not doing anything.

Got it, I have a Omen 15-CE 1050ti , that i needed to replace it with
    time to move from HP

  • Is the storage soldered in or is it upgradeable?

    • It's upgradable and there are 2x M.2 slots

Nice to see the 7840HS coming to australia, hate the laptop it's attached to though

    • +1

why do you hate the laptop?

      • Stole his Weet-Bix

  • 300 nits peak brightness is a tough sell unfortunately. But these sound pretty nice if that's not a concern for you. Most reviews I've checked out seemed pretty positive.

    • I agree. I went in store to TGG to check the recent Lenovo IdeaPad 3i Gaming Laptop deal. The 250 nit display was pretty awful. Stopped me from buying it. Compared to a 16” $140 Zeuslap 400 nit usbc display from AliExpress, terrible.

Having said that I have a 21 Legion Pro and the 500? nit screen on that is a thing of beauty

  • Cashrewards now have 13% cash back,
    which brings it to $1,634.73
    looks acceptable.

    bought just now, purchase recognized.
    $244.27 cashback pending now,
    approved√

    • Is the offer still on?

      • not anymore, it only last for a few hours,
I end up cancelled it, gonna wait for the lowest and valuest! $1634 isn't tempting enough!

        • +2

I thought this was really good value esp. with gen 4 architecture and the 4060.

          • @bindok: if that's the slim 7, I'll go for it without hesitate,
slim 5 downgrade some points and only got 300 nits,I felt I might regret it in the future, so why not give the price some time and I can save more money meanwhile lol🙈

            • @BlackPink: It's very unlikely the Legion Slim 7i will get anywhere close to this price point especially given the current market conditions.

The Slim 7i is also now the only true premium gaming laptop in their line-up given that they've cut corners in this year's Legion Pro 7i by stripping away the premium touches. The Slim 7i still retains a lot of these features - backlit ports, diamond cut stainless steel finish etc.

There is a deal on the Lenovo website however it's a lot more $$$
              Legion Slim 7i Gen 8 - Intel Core™ i7-13700H, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, RTX 4060, 16" 3.2k 430nits 165Hz, 99Wh, 3Yr - $2779

              • @fastnet: actually I bought legion pro 7i 4070 on around ~2600 earlier this year, but my partner is my babys' owner now😭,
I need get myself a cheaper one instead, couldn't afford a expensive one anymore 😭😭😭😭😭

            • @BlackPink: Fair enough :)

      • Offer is back on now ;). Until tomorrow!

  • There's a lot of concern of heat on this model from Chinese reviewers, but that might just be Zen 4 doing Zen 4 things. None of them has tried enabling Eco Mode in Ryzen Masters though from what I can see, so if you're worried about poor thermal performance I'd wait for a good English review
