The way that aspartame got into the list of being a "possible" cancer risk is that there have been a few papers "suggesting" there is a relationship regardless of the strength of the relationship. WHO literally said "The evidence for aspartame causing cancer is limited" so now it's in this list.
It is still more probable to get cancer from working the night shift or eat red meat… this is not even going into how bad the study was that keeps getting referenced from 15 years ago where the dosages that were given to the rats were epically high and how they screwed up the actual testing by letting them die of old age and then attempting to diagnose how they died.
