Endurance (TBW): 800 TB - Nice

    • I am wrong thinking that is very low?

      • For a 1TB drive that's actually pretty good, budget 1TB drives come with endurance as low as 200 - 300 TBW

Its so crap that you need to pay $300 for 1TB of extra xbox storage When its only $100 for PS5

    • +4

      Was only $56 for PS5.

    • +1

Support for 8TB NVMe drives has just been added to the latest PS5 beta firmware

1/2/4TB prices going to keep falling

  • Do these run very hot?

    • +2

So so… its not made for a laptop if thats why your asking. its not as efficient as the 990 Pro or Hynix P41 that are better options for laptops

      • +1

Efficiency isn't the only factor to consider for laptops. While P41 is quite efficient, Tom's Hardware did find thermal is its weakness.

        Tom's Hardware on P41 Platinum:

We do recommend that users equip this drive with a heatsink, if possible. This is especially true if you expect the drive to dwell in a warmer environment.

Page 1 of the review, the summary table, under cons:

        Runs hot; no heatsink

        • @netsurfer what would be your recommendation for my situation, a good price drive?
And what do you think about the KC3000 for a laptop? Do you think the 990 Pro would be the better option?

          • @patrick321: Wait for a better priced deal unless you really like and want a KC3000. Honestly, for most people, it is mostly about wanting an SSD that tops benchmark tests. Unless the 1TB version is heavily discounted, I suggest try to get 2TB or larger version of PCIe gen 4 x4 SSDs.

      • Yes for my laptop and future laptop…
In the past Samsung would have been my go to but I don't want to have to do firmware updates, when you buy something it should work out of the box.
I remember buying the Samsung 970 evo 1tb way back for $525 so almost 10 times what a certain recent deal on this site was. :o

        • It might actually be worthwhile to pick an SSD with good firmware update support. Even for KC3000, Phison seems to feel DirectStorage is going to make a difference and has started new SSD firmware able to better take advantage of DirectStorage. Other SSD makers will likely do the same eventually.

If flagship gen4 SSD is what you want, get one you really like when it's at a decent discounted price.

We are seeing price drops on SSDs still and next upcoming sale might be black Friday & cyber Monday.

Phison E18 based SSDs such as KC3000, best to go 2TB or higher.

The latest shipped Samsung SSDs do reportedly have the firmware fix.

However, some of the deals, e.g. Amazon UK deals, may be clearing stock with non-updated firmware.

          • @bjt: I can do the firmware fix if needed but some are saying even with the firmware upgrade these still give problems, who knows? It just puts me off Samsung, but if the $56 deal comes up again it's worth the punt.

The SK Hynix P31 was found to be a good laptop SSD, however the P41 is a different beast.

One thing that can help keep the laptop SSD cool is keeping at least 20%-25% freespace on the SSD.

        • Thanks for the input I will check out the SK Hynix P31. 20%-25% free space shouldn't be a problem for me.

          Update-
I did some reading and it seems to use less power, so I would assume it runs cooler. The battery life does not worry me as my laptop is plugged in 99% or the time and acts like a desktop mainly, but the temperature is what interests me.
I wonder if there is any performance benefit from the 2TB over the 1TB.
I will keep an eye on the price of this one.

          • @patrick321: Note that the SK Hynix P31 is Gen3 x4, whereas the Samsung 990 is Gen4 x4.

The SK Hynix P31 went on sale during prime day.

I would consider the price difference at the time, in determining which SSD to get.

If the laptop can take Gen4 NVMe, I'd get a 990 pro at these prices.

  • Hi all, whats a good gen 3 boot drive? Maybe 2tb. Ta

Centre Com have it for $99.75 with free shipping, use coupon SSDay

    • You are brave to list a Centre Com deal on a deal posted by chatGPT. chatGPT cannot stand Centre Com due to multiple shonky business practices OZBers experienced.

    • +1

You forgot the surcharge - real total is $100.95

If you do not have eBay Plus, paying the extra 20c to buy from Comp Alliance instead of Centre Con is the bargain of the year

@bjt have Centre Con refunded your money yet?

      • Hi, I put a dispute in via PayPal, provided them the email, and received a full refund, as per PayPal's timeline.

BTW, this is related to why I made that post previously (and got told to chill out by others) - I wasn't sure at the time if I should dispute it, but in the end I decided it's best to dispute it as generally, the dispute should be filed as soon as you are aware.

I received an email, "Case closed in your favour", I dont know what occurred between PayPal and CentreCom.

        • Thanks for confirming

          So end story is:

Centre Com did not ship you a printer that you paid for
They made you waste massive amounts of time contacting them without proper resolution of the issue
There was an unjustified delay in receiving your money back as Centre Com did not process a standard refund and you had to file a PayPal dispute

@beetran Some feedback for you to take back to the Centre Com operations team - a pretty shit experience

Original deal: Epson Ecotank ET-4850 4 Colour Multifunction Printer $249 in-Store Only + Surcharge @ Centre Com

          • @Look Up: I didn't find myself wasting too much time on them, because I instead chose to dispute it.

The reason being they contacted me but the email was strangely worded (you will receive your refund "in a few today"…thank you for your patience).

However, I was absolutely unsure if they had contacted Paypal in kind. As, a transaction reversal notification is quite quick with PayPal.

I didn't find their reasons compelling either. The shipping address in PayPal was addressed to their store, and the money was taken. It would be unsuitable if they then filed that as a change of mind, with PayPal - essentially using this as credit to restock after tax time.

I think the best approach for CentreCom is a walk-in purchase, understanding that stock may be already sold.

      • Yeah I am now regretting having ordered from them. Stuff is still not shipped. Listed as in stock, but apparently that means in stock with supplier.

  • Do these need heatsinks ?
My B560m Aorus Pro's 2nd slot in encroached by my Gb 3060ti not sure if I have room.

    • +1

If it is for B560m Aorus Pro's 2nd slot, it is a chipset slot with PCIe gen 3 x4. This SSD running at PCIe gen 3 x4 mode via chipset, my guess is you probably don't need a heatsink. I don't have a KC3000 SSD to run tests. However, it does feel like an overkill to get this for a secondary slot via chipset and PCIe gen 3. The price just isn't cheap enough to make it worthwhile.

      • Thanks for the input!
