This is its ordinary price, and still overvalued for its shit quality. You're paying an extra $50 for a logo.

Feel the same. Bought this and Helly Hansen Jacket from this deal.

Feel Macpac jacket as very low quality with filmsy outer material. Helly Hansen Jacket for $135 is a lot lot better.

Fabulous, can you please share the link where you can get a 600 loft 100% down jacket for $49?

I noticed that Industrie also have 30% off their puffer jackets, (about $105ish after discount at their factory outlet). Went instore to check them out and their quality is worlds above the likes of macpac and kathmandu.

      • The MUJI Lightweight Down Jacket has significantly better in its build quality and is 750, although I wouldn't get too tied up in the spec sheets. The Macpac one has become noticeably lighter since Super Retail Group acquisition and yet its spec sheet has mysteriously remained unchanged. Unless it is independently certified from an fill testing authority (e.g. IDFL) it's not worth the paper it is written on.

I would also question if something like the Kathmandu Heli is now equivalent to the Macpac Halo. They traditionality have been in different purchasing categories (e.g. Polyester outer, reduced fill weight on paper), but with the change with Macpac I do think they wouldn't be noticeably different. If you can find the original V1 version of the Halo, sure - but the variant produced since the Super Retail Group acquisition? Eh.

          Apples and oranges.

Spec sheets do matter as warmth is primarily determined by BOTH fill power and fill weight. In a men's medium, the Halo has a fill weight of 205g whilst the Heli has a fill weight of 108g. As both jackets have a fill power of 600, the Halo is considerably warmer.

The Muji jacket would have a similar fill weight to the Heli. The fact that the Muji jacket has a higher fill power does not come anywhere close enough to bridging the difference in fill weight.

PS. There was a change in the Halo outer shell fabric about a year ago. I suspect that Macpac went to a lower denier nylon which impacts weight/feel/durabilty more so than warmth.

PPS. Macpac down is supplied by Allied Feather who use the IDFL methodology for measuring fill power. Every batch of down is tested and the results can be accessed by using the QR code on the tags that come with each Macpac jacket. Many of the major manufacturers of down jackets (eg. North Face, Moncler, Feathered Friends, Norrona, etc) rely on Allied's testing.

I own a macpac jacket - probably this one (looks like it) and i've had it for years and its not shitty quality thats for sure.

    • +3

Yeah the quality isn't the same anymore. Have had mine for close to 5 years, but my partner got one last year and the outer material is different. Still warm though.

      • +1

I noticed the same thing. My jacket which i got 6 years ago has a different material to my wifes one. The new material is too creasy. My jacket is thicker and is of better quality for sure.

Favourite Ozb community jacket is back on special for one day!

Just like it was on special for this same price only a few days ago? Will likely be on sale for the same price tomorrow. And again the day after. And the next after that. For all perpetuity.

Probably just tag it as long running.

  • The photos all look puffier than the one I got. Who stole my feathers?

    • You need to give it a good shake to fluff it up.

      • +2

        That's what she said.

    • You need to shake it out and hang it up, it will eventually become puffier after a day or so.

    • +1

Same marketing people that do burger photos.

    • Give it a week or so for it to naturally fluff up (must be hung up) for the feathers to bloom out.

  • Can anyone recommend a waterproof down jacket?

    • Can recommend the Macpac Phoenix jacket which is currently on clearance. It features 3 layer Pertex Shield and is 20k waterproof. It is signficantly better than the Macpac Otira which is also waterproof.

If the Macpac site does not have your preferred size/colour, ask your local Macpac store to check availability as the web site does not display stock levels across all stores.

      • Certainly a pretty penny even on clearance, and looks like the Macpac website only has womens. No Macpac near me unfortunately, by chance do you know how it would compare to this?

Got one a few years ago and I got another one this month. The quality went down A LOT. It's not as warm anymore, the material is lower quality overall. I wouldn't recommend mac pac anymore.

    • I got one with the recent sale as well but i'm viewing it as a lighter jacket as we trend into the slightly warmer months. It's certainly not to the standard when we got my sister one a couple years ago but i think for the price is still pretty decent if you compare to getting RRP for some other brands. If you're happy to do a bit of layering and run warm already i think it's still fine to use in Melbourne.
