Driving Uber - Is It Still Worth in 2023?

Is it still worth to drive uber now that the petrol price is high, also taking other costs into consideration?

The only reason I am considering driving uber is because of the flexibility. I can't commit to fixed hours. I have a fulltime job but still struggling to meet families need. So, I am thinking of doing something to get some extra money.

Do I need to drive lot of hours to make it worthwhile? How much per hour is the earning after deducting all the expenses roughly?

    • I'll take Netflix over $22k any day of the week.

Yeah, good on you for that.

I take the $22k as it will to 1/3 to my Tesla dream 😂

I'm saving up for Netflix premium, also 1/3 of the way there.

        • Car or stonks?

I’m still making $32~ after vehicle expenses.
Not really worth it compared to my job.

If you have to include ‘promotions’ and tips in your earnings, their rate is bulkshit. Trying to obfuscate the low rate by offering stupid bonuses.

      • Unfortunately I can’t avoid the ‘promotions’ as they’re just a marketing ploy.
I have promotions every single day so I just consider them normal, not outliers or anything else if they cancel them then it’s (profanity). But yeah, only worked out to be about $32/hr after expenses so I don’t waste my time doing it anymore

So then you have to put it through tax on your tax return and get way less?

          • @FujiFruit: Brah.
On certain centrelink payments you are obligated to pay tax. Most people that work pay tax.
What’s your point? Someone working customer service getting $40/hr has to pay tax and gets way less than $40/hr
            Gross vs Net

        • What’s a promotion? I understand tips as a driver but don’t get what promos are…

And you seem to be earning around $10 per trip, that sounds pretty good! Is gathering 3 meals from maccas all at once and delivering to 3 different addresses 3 trips?

          • @cloudy: Promotions are basically deliver 40 times in one weekend for an extra $100 or similar.
Yes that would count but you can only do 2 deliveries at a time, not 3 or more etc.

            • @Darude Sandstorm: Ah I see, and there seems to be a promotion every weekend by the looks of your earnings?

And is there incentives for delivering faster? Especially when you’re close to the latest expected arrival time?

              • @cloudy: Every day for the last 3 years there has been promotions lol.

No incentive’s, just means you can get onto the next delivery quicker.
Extra money on deliveries if you have to wait for food to be prepared.
Earnings are consistent if you’re at dinner and lunch times. Depending on are it can be consistent all day.

Do you mind sharing your vehicle expense calculations and/or how you've tracked them? A lot of drivers don't fully capture all of their expenses which leads to a false calculations of net earnings.

      • Expenses are a bit funny to work out and usually all done at tax time.
Vehicle depreciation, fuel, insurances, business use vs personal use.
Big advantage of working on my own car, having my own tools, bushing presses, knowing where to get parts, doing my own servicing, timing belt and chain costs, hybrid battery replacement costs, even owning a hybrid it’s still a 3.5L V6 hybrid that chews anywhere from 8-12L/100kms and needs 98.
I reduced this a bit using 11-seven and having a phone at home that I could remotely update it’s location to lock fuel prices on my 7/11 account.
Fixed costs of insurance and calculating deductions for business use, phone use etc.

Also got the funky vehicle appreciation situation as well, but without selling the car it’s all paper gains so not a factor til reselling and calculating depending on how much it sells for etc.

    • wow that is a lot of trip for the time you were online. how many orders do you got per hour in average? the food is already to pick up when you arrive?

      • +1

Wait times for a couple minutes usually, average 4-5 an hour, I pick and choose restaurants I know are easy to get to (not in shopping centres, places with parking and ones that are usually quick)

  • Uber is a disgusting organisation that survives by destroying existing businesses by breaking the law and expecting weak governments to change legislation to suit them.

    Because "sharing".

  • With the rising interest rate rises,I'm surprised that there isn't many people jumping on something like this to boost there income one way or another.

There are thats why pay is so bad due to so much driver supply

Earning money with Uber is easy and profitable if you drive Friday/Saturday night (and don't mind the significant risk of someone throwing up in your car), and around football/concert events. Otherwise, give it a miss. A terrible way to earn money when you factor in all costs.

  • Lying to your insurance company is never a good idea. They can refuse to honour the insurance contract if you have not been truthful. If you work as an Uber driver, you should definitely tell your insurance company. This may result in a higher premium, which you need to factor into your calculations as to whether Uber driving is worth it to you. Good luck

  • Spotted a guy locally doing food delivery on an electric motorbike. That’d be cheap to run.

I've been driving for Uber as a second job for a few weeks and have been taking it seriously. However, my verdict is that it's not worth it. There have been times when I've waited for an hour or even two, under the harsh sun, without receiving a single request. Previously, there were promotions, but I haven't received any lately. I wouldn't recommend it. You're better off exploring a different business opportunity.

Try driving Didi instead. You earn more

The telephone operators at Uber are very abusively dishonest (the irreconcilable discord between the continued false pretences made by Ronald Sugar and Dara Khosrowshahi of Uber and the continued heinous, evil abuse they heap on Uber drivers through their telephone operators shows Sugar and Khosrowshahi to be disgusting cowards performing the disgustingly depraved acts for each other and for other men they need to perform to maintain their positions of safety and advantage in society).
