Very weird deal I noticed on their home page. If your name is Matilda, you can get 10% off flights using the code. Could be related to the women's world cup.

On sale from 12:01am AEST 20 July 2023 until 11:59pm on 31 July 2023. For travel from 14 August 2023 to 14 September 2023 on Virgin Australia operated flights unless sold out prior. 10% discount applies to Economy Choice and Lite fares booked on virginaustralia.com and cannot be used in conjunction with any other promotion. Discount does not apply to fees and taxes. Discount is applied automatically at the time of booking after entering the promo code in the “Book a Flight” screen. All fares subject to availability. International return fares may vary with the addition of local taxes and charges or due to currency fluctuations. Seat selection and checked baggage are not included in Economy Lite fares. Payment surcharge may apply. Economy Lite fares are not recommended if you require flexibility with your travel as cancellations are not permitted and you may need to pay a fee and any fare difference to make a change. For other fare types, a fee and fare difference may be payable for changing or cancelling your booking. See Virgin Australia’s Fees and Surcharges page for more information. Refunds are not permitted for Economy Lite and Choice fares if you cancel your booking. Refunds are permitted for Economy Flex fares on payment of a fee. You may also request a refund for other reasons, including under the Australian Consumer Law. Check your fare rules for more information. Some flights may be operated by a partner airline. Different baggage allowances and conditions may apply to these flights. Full terms and conditions at www.virginaustralia.com.

    Copy pasted from Wikipedia
The Australia women's national soccer team is overseen by the governing body for soccer in Australia, Football Australia, which is currently a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the regional ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) since leaving the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) in 2006. The team's official nickname is "the Matildas" (from the Australian folk song "Waltzing Matilda"), having been known as the "Female Socceroos" before 1995.

  • +6

I also noticed prices got jacked up just as this promotion started as the day before I was looking at flights.
    Typical dodgy company practices.
Jack up prices, then run a promotion…

    • +1

a promotion a tiny tiny percentage of people can actually claim is legit, this is 99.9% the rest of us, just a price raise fr.

  • +7

Same deal if your name is: Bort

  • +2

My name is Waltzing Is that close enough?

    • Only three steps away, but no cigar, sorry

They'll make you dance for a discount on your tickets.

  • -5

They should have allowed people with team members name to have that offer, which would be common sense, but this is nothing but a marketing stunt

    • +1

What else would it have been? 🤦‍♂️

  • +17

Could be related to the women's world cup.

  • Don't you not require ID for domestic flights?

    • You don't not. It's basically an air bus. (sometimes literally)

    • I'm not sure its a requirement but the last few times I boarded a domestic flight, was ID'd at bag drop, all with Virgin

  • +1

    Dumbest deal of the year?

    • +4

  • +2

Department said it could take upto 4 weeks to change my name. Hope they keep winning.

  • +4

For domestic flights I’ve never had my ID checked so, here’s to a rush of Matildas

  • -3

  • +1

My name is jv - do I qualify?

    • +2

jv flies free in luggage compartment

      • I was going to say the fuel tanks but close enough

        • the day Virgin figures out how to fly on Collingwood supporters I'm handing in a few neighbours and get a ticket to Darwin. one way!

  • Is this even a deal?

    • No, complete waste of time for 99.999% of the population, and even if your name is matilda who cares about 10% off? It's not like you are going to be changing your holiday plans because of it.

At least Ryanair used to give people free flights based off their name occasionally

  • There’ll be a few toddlers around named Matilda. source

    • 2019 mate, those kids aren't toddlers anymore.. Some are already enrolled for school!

My daughter born in 2015 has three friends named Matilda, though one is the traditional spelling Mathilde so does that count? The name is hardly Australian.

  • Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, I'm gonna get ya…what a bargain we all wait—-ing for~~~

You'll come rename yourself a Matilda with me~~~

  • Doesn't work. There's no 'Book a flight' button on homepage nor a place to enter a promo code. When clicking 'Book now' under the Matilda promotion on home page it doesn't work either

  • In this day and age I dunno why a company would run a promo like this.

Honestly I couldn’t care, but people get their knickers in a bunch over this kind of shit (discrimination from many angles).

    • Yep wouldn’t be hard to bend this into anti-anything if you had an agenda to push. Really can’t see it being worth their trouble.

  • What's their policy on name change?

  • I am Spartacus Matilda!

  • +1

    Everyone asking about name changes..

Not even any point, ID isn’t checked in Australia for domestic flights. Book in any name and fly in any name.

    • oh word?

do we even need passport for domestic

    • It’s a federal offence. Just because they don’t check doesn’t mean it’s okay. They or the AFP can check if they want to.

      • Not worth it I agree with you

      • Any person over the age of 18 years can assume a new name simply by consistently using a new name, who's to say the first time you decided to change your name wasn't for this fantastic promotion, to honour your favourite sports team?

  • Oh no, but my name is adlitam

  • Is it even enforced? I just did a test booking and the 10% off was still applied when entering passenger's name as something else other than Matilda. Made it all the way to the payment page without any errors.
