I've been looking for a good camping pillow and the reviews have been solid on this but the price wasn't to my liking. Must be a pricing error as the large pillow is normally $90-$120 and the Regular size around $70-80. Be sure to select "1 Count (Pack of 1)" which is definitely the large, I ordered 2 and they arrived today. These are excellent and very versatile pillows and very comfortable.

Real campers sleep on a log or rock

Oh nooo. Man needs some comfort while camping.

      • Its Funnier if you read this in a Home Simpson voice.

        "Öhhh noooo"

I would, if the alternative was $60 for a pillow!
I guess some people are just too soft for camping. What is wrong with stuffing your clothes into the sleeping-bag cover?

So camping is only for tough gigachad?

        • real campers need no sleeping bag

        • +2

I think the average person can cope with a $5 pillow at home, never mind when toughing it.

I like to camp with nothing but camouflage body paint and a hunting knife.

          • @bargaino: I forgo the camouflage body paint. Hunting knife should suffice.

        • Chadette's as well

There's nothing wrong with a bit of comfort. You could just as well say "Why do campers need a tent? All you need is a tarp and some string". We shouldn't make camping an elitist activity. :)

I just bring my pillow from home if car camping - that costs $0 since I already have it. I only use a camping pillow if I have to hike first.

        • Allow for a little hyperbole please. I have an expensive Therm-a-Rest(tm) mattress, though a $10 closed-cell foam one is adequate.
I assumed we were talking about "real" camping, where the stuffed cover saves weight, not car camping. Totally agree on the latter.

Mmm well… I still wouldn't say someone who prefers a camping pillow is "too soft for camping".

If I'm just doing an overnight or 2-night hike I wouldn't have brought enough clothes to make a good pillow. Of course pillows are also very subjective - some people can sleep flat without a pillow while people with sore necks from too much desk work might need more support.

      • Sleeping bag cover feels crap to me. But I do bring an empty pillow case and stuff that with clothes. Or if going super light use a microfiber towel wrapped around clothes.

  • Real campers sleep on side on their arm, like our forefathers did

cant any pillow be a camping pillow?

    • I had the same thought. [edit: removed sass]

Its selling points are its reversible (one waterproof side for storage, one soft fabric side for sleeping) and it packs smaller.

Now whether those features are necessary is up to the individual to decide.

      • I'd say every pillow case has the same selling point..

        • …yes, you can sleep on every pillow - that is a shared selling point. But not every pillow is reversible, waterproof, and has a built in mechanism for compacting it. Those are additional selling points. Whether or not you are sold on them is a different question.

    • Technically yes.. niche camping pillows like this I would say doesn't fall under regular car camping for example since you can bring luxury with you out the car.

When thru-hiking and having to pack all the essentials into one single bag for an overnight, or multiday hiking trip these are where specific camping pillows shines.

The main perks is weight and pack size. When you're limited with these it makes a huge difference to save weight and size. I thru hike often and I've gone through many air inflated pillows but it's not just the same. A pillow that has a proper fill will make your quality of sleep much better to get back on the track next day. Imagine going out for a few days, have a bad night's sleep and then end up being sore and cranky the next on the hike - not great.

Having a good pillow helps and investing in one that shaves weight and packing size is a huge benefit.

  • How does this compare to the Sea To Summit CoreFoam range? I have the Deluxe version of that and I highly recommend it.

    • Not sure about the CoreFoam range but I also have the sea to summit pillow deluxe and that is uncomfortable, too rigid and high. this pillow has excellent support and feels soft. Don't forgot you can return amazon products.

It's not a price error, they just realized the pillow is just overpriced for what it is… I guess.

I bought this for $41 back in April last year. I used to take a normal pillow but found they get a smokey smell from the campfires etc and dont want the hassle of washing them after every camp trip then having no pillow while it has to dry. These are washable so I just chuck in the washer when I get home.
