Chemist Warehouse Price Match Declined

Hello, I was recently declined a Price Beat at Chemist Warehouse due to their exclusion policy. The price beat I requested was against an item on sale a Woolies, but not discontinued/clearance. I believe I should be entitled to the price beat. Thoughts?

It’s a bloody outrage it is, I suggest to take it all the way to the Prime Minister.

What a bloody outrage! Best start with notifying the local Member of Parliament. I think he's tending to his pigs right about this hour.

        Hey, Mr Prime Minister… ANDY…

Always good to have a spare account to shine some light on these shady retailers …

My thoughts are that you are not giving us a lot to work off… and this is coming from someone who went instore to a Chemist Warehouse yesterday to price beat a sale item advertised in Coles’ weekly catalogue.

    Some questions for you:

    • Were you asking for a price beat at Chemist Warehouse instore or online?

    • What was the item you were trying to price match?

    • Where did Woolworths advertise the sale item? In their weekly catalogue? In another catalogue? In a newspaper advertisement? On their website? In their store only?

Keep in mind there is more to Chemist Warehouse’s Lowest Price Guaranteed offer than you are indicating in your post. I have pasted the full terms below for transparency, because there are more reasons that Chemist Warehouse will deny a price beat than what you have mentioned.

At Chemist Warehouse if you find a cheaper price on the same item at another Australian Registered Pharmacy or Australian Registered Retailer we will match it and give you 10% off the difference.

The price matching policy is limited to the retail limit applicable or a maximum quantity of three of each product.

    In Store:
If you would like to price match in store, please bring a catalogue from the other retailer containing valid proof of their price. The discount will take place during the time you purchase the product in store and our staff may choose to contact the competitor to verify their price before granting the price match.

    Online:
If you would like to price match online, please send us a direct link of the product on the competitors’ website it is being advertised on and your order number. Please note we require notification of your price match request within 24 hours of placing an order with us.

You will need to pay for your order in full, however after your price match has been approved you will receive a refund for the matched price.

Unfortunately, we are unable to process a price match for purchases made through Click & Collect or Fast Delivery.

    Exclusions:
Our price matching policy excludes international orders and offers that are exclusively online. This policy cannot be applied to products at the other company if they are:

    • out of stock
    • short dated
    • on clearance or discontinued
    • A part of a promotional offer e.g. buy one get one free
    • Purchases made through Click and Collect
    • Purchases made through Fast Delivery

Chemist Warehouse reserves the right to deny any price matching claims if they do not meet the above criteria.

    • Any discount lower than RRP could be considered a promotional discount. So unless Chemist Warehouse sells things above RRP, then they reserve the right to not price match anyone ever.

You're right though, OP has nothing to lose by telling us what item it was exactly.

        • +5

Lol so all that faffing around for an extra dollar off a half price item. Gotta admit it gives me perverse pleasure that you went to all that effort only to be denied.

        • +1

You can remove anything after (and including) the question mark in links btw, generally you can for most shop links. I always test the link without the stuff after the question mark to be sure, sometimes it's used as a query to conjure up the specific item.

Were you trying to pay with gift cards or whatever at Chemist Warehouse? I'd think that a half price sale is exactly the kind of thing price matches will do. But according to their rules it could be a "promotional offer", any advertised limited time discount could be a promotional offer really.

        • I am going to assume you asked for a price beat instore.

I suspect the price beat was denied for one of the following reasons:

          1. The Champagne Glow shade is not specifically advertised on the physical or digital Woolworths catalogue as being half price.

I can see the overall product type in the Woolworths catalogue being marked as half price, but the issue is that the Woolworths catalogue has a picture of the Pink Glow shade, plus when you go to the digital catalogue, it only shows Pink Glow, Bronze Glow and Blush Glow. Obviously, you could show the link on the Woolworths website or even a photo of the instore price tag at Woolworths, but then that is not the Woolworths catalogue, which is the condition for an instore price beat. You could argue with staff that the Woolworths catalogue is advertising half price across the entire Mcobeauty range (excluding clearance items), but you would come back to the issue that the product you are wanting to purchase is not specifically advertised in the Woolworths catalogue.

In my case, the product I wanted was specifically advertised on the Coles catalogue as being on sale, so the Chemist Warehouse staff member happily went along with the price beat (and so did the store manager, who had to authorise the price beat).

          2. The person who served you at Chemist Warehouse believed Woolworths is not an “Australian Registered Retailer” for the Mcobeauty product.

It is easiest to counter this by pointing out that Woolworths is listed as a stockist on the Mcobeauty website.

          3. The staff member had no intention of honouring a price beat request and would use any excuse to deny your request.

Unfortunately, this can happen, and is why some other commenters here are suggesting you should purchase it from Woolworths instead.

My recommendation is you try a different Chemist Warehouse staff member / store and see whether they are more accommodating for your request. If a staff member is going to strictly follow the price beat terms and conditions, you should be denied for reason (1), but you never know!

    • Chemist Warehouse refuses to price match with Amazon as its an online only retailer.

CH policy is a bit confusing as the price match policy does NOT refer to physical stores.
The only requirement is Australian Registered Pharmacy or Australian Registered Retailer. My interpretation is a retailer can be physical, online or both but can not be a wholesaler.

      However, the exclusions state:
Our price matching policy excludes international orders and offers that are exclusively online.
Online stores by extension can only provide exclusively online offers and we now have debate!

    • +3

I bet you salivated when you saw this post. Even threw in a capital letter!

      • meanwhile….you dont seem fixated at all ….lol!

        • I am fixated on you. No secret there. (And JV, but I find you more endearing)

  • +2

You mustn't value your time. How much was the 10% worth? Now you wasted even more time posting on here. Should have cut your losses earlier.

    • +3

Sooo.. $1.45 you would of saved?

    • +2

Price matching at CW is always a pain. The time spent waiting for a manager and then going through the deal with a fine tooth comb is not worth IMO.
Try a different store and you'll probably get it.
      It's not 10% price beat. It's 10% of the difference. So $1.45

  • +1

Just try a different store or even person from the same store (at a diffeent time). Could be as simple as the staff making a mistake.

    • +3

Hardly worth it for $1.45. Besides I think it is good to reward the business that has the item on sale. I tend to only use price matching when the business with the special is inconvenient to get to (location, hours etc) which is not the case with Woolworths.

      • I tend agree that its hardly worth it, but OP seems quite keen to get 10% off and appears to have trouble problem solving.

Their store in my hometown try hard to underwhelm the Wish shopping site!

Lol, I just had an incedent today, went to Tarneit gardens chemist warehouse and asked them to price match a product at discount on Big W and Coles. Their standard practice is to make customers wait loooooong to discourage them to ask for price match. I love doing it because as soon as you ask for price match it's like you dropped a bomb lol …all staff takes it as challenge to not let that happen. After while they will get back to you saying other store whom we were trying to price match is not answering phone… I normally leave all the stuff with them (else which I would have bought in that visit)..

I avoid price matching on principle. It’s a strategy stores use to maximise profits by selling items at the highest price a customer will pay. The strategy is sell the item to most people at a higher price, but advertise that you can always get the best price due to the price guarantee. It’s so disingenuous. I’d rather forego the 10% extra discount and give someone else my business.

    • Honour the sauce source.

  • Total Bastards.
Did it to me with the Woolies Berocca deal 2 months ago, made me wait 20 minutes, then only sold me 3.
If Woolies are still making money selling for that price, so are they.

    • their policy states that they only price match one item…lol!

  • If you can show the item discounted on the website, they price match.

  • Buy it at Woolies. The 10% discount of $1.45 is not worth the effort !!!

  • +2

This is a matter of principle. Anyone berating the OP that the amount being sought is not worth it has a woeful understanding of what it means to be an OzBargainer and will be immediately sent to a re-education facility.

  • Have you tried complaining to the UN council of human rights?

  • yes they should of price matched but we cant win them all

  • I just did 2 price matches at Chemistwarehouse with Big W - no questions asked.

  • Hi all. Does chemist warehouse price match with stores at other states? I live in Adelaide, but chemist warehouse refused for me when I use the stores in Victoria to price match. However, their policy does not mention "At Chemist Warehouse if you find a cheaper price on the same item at another Australian Retail Store, we will match it and give you 10% off the difference!"

    • Some staff may not be fully familiar with the details of the price match policy. Just tell them I would like to speak with the store manager or ask them to contact their head office to confirm the price match policy.

  • Has anyone else noticed how strict Chemist Warehouse has become with their price matching lately? I recently had a request denied because the competitor's price was labeled as 'sale,' 'half-price,' or 'special offer'—even though these prices were clearly advertised and available to everyone. In the past, I never had an issue with these types of price matches.
