Feedback on Sumo NBN Melbourne

Hi there,

I'm after Sumo NBN feedback.

I just changed to Sumo for energy and gas and they offer $25 monthly discount on NBN. Although I would have to get a 24 month contract to avoid paying the new modem.

I want to get more feedback before I swap, I rarely have issues with current provider but the $25 discount is tempting. Usage is streaming movies/videos in 2 different TV's plus need good upload for the POE cameras I have around the house.

No exit fees with current provider since I'm month to month.

Thanks!

Most ISPs are month to month. I wouldn't sign a 24 month nbn contract from an energy company who pretends to be an ISP. Sumo uses Optus. All I can find is Sumo nbn on Product Review and there isn't many new reviews. What's the monthly price and speed Sumo are offering you?

    • It's $85 for 40 Mbps download or $105 for 80 Mbps download, from there discount of $25. It's minimum 12 months but then I'd have to pay the modem which is $159. The only way to have free modem is with the 24 month contract but it's too long so I'm unsure.

I would go for the $85 one which would be $60 with the discount, $15 less per month compared to current provider but again it's worthless if we have bad service because then I'd have to pay exit fees.

exetel and superloop are cheaper if you don't mind switching between them every 6 months. if you'd like a longer deal, leaptel is 12 months long.
you already have a modem, you can continue using it.

More Telecom is cheaper than them and valid for 12 months.

@jv: didn't want to assume OP had a commbank debit/credit card

          • @jv: Yes, it's a very good price if I had a CBA account. Do you know if every month I need to pay with that card or just the first time when doing the set up?

I would like to avoid the monthly fee. Would it work to set regular deposit and debit transactions to avoid the monthly fee?

            • @Cherry12: If you change the card for payment, the discount stops

There is no monthly fee with a CDIA account .

        • Aren't modems locked to their providers?

I haven't tried to use it with other provider yet?

          • +1

@Cherry12: Sometimes, it depends on the model. Check the back and underneath the modem/router for the model name.

Someone else made the comment… don’t sign up to an electricity company pretending to be an ISP. They are the worst, More isn’t far off too from what I’ve heard. Spoken to people who work for CBA who get an employee discount with more and they’d rather pay more to go elsewhere. It’s that bad.

What a con, 24 months for a contract with the modem. Go buy a Telstra modem for $25, go with Superloop, Exetel, Leaptel. An actual ISP and live happily ever after.

Do you really need another 24 month contract at this stage?

I'm with More, as I suspect a few ppl on OzB are, competitive prices with CommBank discount.

I get far more 'NBN planned outages' than I used to. They say it's NBN work and nothing to do with them. Coincidence? Maybe NBN are actually doing works around my area. Otherwise I have nothing bad to say about them. My internet is on 99% of the time and whenever I do a speed test I get 101/17, which is what I pay for.

OP - don't sign up for 24months. Go somewhere else.

      • How long are those NBN planned outages for?

        • +1

Usually 3-5 hrs in the wee hours of the morning.

            I usually wee at 8am.

      • Coincidence?

        Yes.

        Are you on HFC?

Outages are scheduled by NBNCo, not your ISP.

I've never had an outage with More Telecom. I'm on FTTP.

        • HFC yes.

          • @cheaplee: My folks are on HFC with Superloop and get countless 'scheduled maintenance' notifictations.
It has nothing to do with the ISP, just an issue with using coax.

            • @jv: Yeah interesting, thanks.

I don't recall every getting them when I was with other ISP, same address, but perhaps they didn't bother sending them on to me.

FWIW I've never been able to attribute any internet downtime/fault to More and I'm happy enough I switched

              • @cheaplee:

I don't recall every getting them when I was with other ISP, same address

Not all ISPs will notify you of the outages.

    • Yeah, I don't need to change, I'm month to month now without issues. I was thinking of changing just for the discount but I guess it's not worth it. Thanks for the feedback!

      • +1

It probably still is worth changing, just not to them

      • Who are you with currently?

    • +1

and they’d rather pay more to go elsewhere. It’s that bad.

      LOL

I've been with More Telecom for over a year.
      Never had an outage.

My current speed on the 250/25 plan is:

      PING 2 ms
      DOWNLOAD 262.14 Mbps
      UPLOAD 23.67 Mbps

Has been pretty much like that every time I test.

      go with Superloop,

I was with Superloop before switching to More.

More's speeds local & international have been far superior

  • Thanks everybody! I've changed to Leaptel.

How do I work out if my Optus modem is locked or not?

I have NBN but now will upgrade to Fibre to the premises.

Or what's a cheap modem I could buy for this?

    • You can tell by just leaving it plugged and it should switch over and start working.
With Optus and Leaptel you don't need to enter credentials.

      • Do you mean that it should work the same once the internet switch is over? I wouldn't need to do any settings change?

        Thanks!
