Decision to Leave - Free to Watch @ SBS on Demand

3160

Just noticed this was available.

The latest film from director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Handmaiden, Thirst, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, Stoker).

This was my personal favourite movie of 2022 and was unfairly snubbed for a nomination in just about every category at the Oscars last year.

Yes, I know, SBS streaming quality is terrible and it has ads, but free is free and it's a quality film

unfairly snubbed for for a nomination in just about every category at the Oscars last year

IMO that's more of an endorsement than if it won. Thanks OP, gonna check this out.

    • +23

It has some fantastic editing (that includes some great story-relevant Easter eggs), terrific performances and brilliant directing.

Due to the nature of the film being about words lost in translation (it's a story about a Chinese immigrant becoming entangled with a Korean detective) some people think certain parts of the plot become confusing to follow due to both languages being in English subtitles, but I didn't find it all that difficult or detracting.

Saw once in cinema and once on Blu Ray and both were pretty great experiences

      • Is this subtitled for English?

        • +2

          Yes

      • +8

Korean cinema is so far above US studio movies right now. Even the average Korean ones are on par with the best US movies.

        • +2

Yeah Korea series and films are pretty good these days, better than almost all Hollywood junk that's turned out.

PS Kodi works well, just don't hit the up down arrows (google TV) or it jumps a whole chapter or so.

        • -1

Oh la la! What a claim!

        • You're not wrong there. Cant even think of the last US drama or movie I've watched recently

          • +1

            @mitchbourke: NEWSFLASH.

The much decayed superiority claims made by, or about, the USA in almost every field are defunct or overrated.
Their nature (in places) is nice, though.

FIGJAM made in the US of A, has passed it's use by date.

    • The Oscars are now woke territory - unless you meet certain "diversity" criteria, your movie will not be considered.

As umexcuseme said, I consider that an endorsement, and a shame on the Oscars who will no longer judge on creativity, vision, compelling story lines and many other criteria that differentiate between a mediocre piece and a masterpiece…

      • +5

Oscars who will no longer judge on creativity, vision, compelling story lines

Not sure how you could describe Everything Everywhere All At Once as lacking in any of those categories.

  • +8

    I love this movie 🍿

  • Is it available on Netflix?

    • +8

Sbs is free for all so…..

      • +10

SBS is full of ads during the movie and spoils the experience.

        • +5

Try with Firefox and the uBlock Origin extension

          • @Skullytor: Ad blocker detected

We use ads to keep our content free. Your ad blocker may interrupt video playback. Turn it off for a seamless streaming experience.

It gives an error message when I try to continue.

            • +2

@saveye: Do you have any other Adblock extensions enabled? I tried a few and I find that some work and some don't. Unlock origin worked when I tried today

        • +7

Remove the ads by streaming through a media player like Kodi with the SBS OnDemand add-on installed.

          • @Big Dog: will see if this works on google tv app.
Still need to setup network access, none of it is straight forward even to find a network path

            • +2

@G-rig: Yep, it works fine through Google TV. It's what I'm using on my Sony TV.

For setup instructions I'd suggest going here

              https://github.com/aussieaddons/plugin.video.sbs

              Alternatively, visit https://www.matthuisman.nz

Matt is a Kodi guru and has developed many add-ons for Australian/NZ streaming services (although, I don't believe the SBS OnDemand add-on is one of his).

              • @Big Dog: Hey mate, yeah Lot of time for nothing so far. I still can't even install the add-on in kodi. Found the repo zip file, send files to tv appears to work but can't even see the file when browsing in kodi to install it. EDIT: Ignore that, my file permissions weren't 'allow all the time' on GTV (I thought while using the app would have sufficed).

Yeah I use irlTV primarily now it's great for FTA (besides sporting programs due to copyright, which is the only time i need the actual TV 's remote). Are you saying you can load catch up programs within the irlTV app?

Have actually never been able to browse to a network directory from kodi, have been looking into that too as it would be much easier to watch the casual download and install these add-ons.

(I was thinking just call up a folder on my Rpi4 for temp files , or would you set up a proper kodi share location on windows desktop (ie making a secure user account and all that stuff)?

                • +5

                  @G-rig:

Visit this link and follow the steps for installing the slyguy repository (as an example) but the main thing is you "add source" with the url of your choice…

                  https://www.matthuisman.nz/2020/02/slyguy-kodi-repository.ht…

                  • From the KODI Main Menu, navigate to Settings (cog at top).
                  • Navigate to "System"
                  • Make sure "Add-ons -> Unknown Sources" is Enabled. Select "Yes" at the warning when enabling
                  • Navigate back to "Settings -> File manager"
                  • Select "Add source".
                  • Select "<None>" and type in exactly https://slyguy.uk (or your source of repository)
                  • Select "OK".
                  • Move down and enter SlyGuy as the source name.
                  • Move down and select "OK".

You've now added a source you can point to.

                  • +1

@Big Dog: Cheers for that the SBS On-demand add on is working from the Aussie add-ons. It was a permissions issue with the Kodi app, but yeah would have been handy if Aussie add-ons was in the list of repos. Will check those Slyguy ones out too.

Be handy to load this up from the irlTV app, don't really use kodi much but have always liked it.

PS. Haven't even noticed ads on the TDF daily highlights this year.

                    • +2

                      @G-rig:

Will check those Slyguy ones out too.

If you use Kayo, I highly recommend that one. It's much better than using the original Kayo app.

PS. Haven't even noticed ads on the TDF daily highlights this year.

You mean what you've been watching through Kodi? That's right, no ads. Same goes for channel 9, channel10 add-ons etc…

                      • @Big Dog: I was watching with the on demand app on the phone.
No ads but that's because I have dns.adguard.com set in the private DNS settings. Seems a lot easier lol.
I probably should buy the paid version of adguard for multiple devices and just enable that.

Cool I'll load the Kayo plug-in, navigating the app sucks doesn't it.

Sounds like a lot use Kodi as their player for all things instead of the individual apps, interesting.. the interface for that TVirl app is fantastic and way faster than the android TV is on my generic TV.

        • -1

If it was full of ads there would be no movie.

    • Why would you need it in Netflix when it's free here?

      • +18

        To avoid ads.

        • +2

Yeh, I only have SBS. Acknowledge adds can break up the immersion.

          • +2

@Ok computer: Gonna record it on Fetch box, then FF ads.

            • @alidli: From a stream? Or when on fta?
              .

              • @Nugs: I'll have to check but I think the box can record SBS either way.

                • +2

@alidli: Fetch wont record streams AFAIK.
SBS on demand used to be great on Fetch as it was only one add every 15minutes max vs 4 times that on the tv app. Then the dreaded Fetch update arrived and I've hardly watched SBS since.
On demand is particularly annoying as the ads must be set by time as they will kick in at the most inopportune moments such as in the middle of a sentence or conversation.
Plus on demand frequently has no subs available, FFS SBS isnt that what you're supposed to be all about?

        • Are there adds though the movie or just at the start and end? Haven't watched for a long time but the movies use to be add free while playing

          • @fatty99: during movies these days, unfortunately (online at least)

        • +2

@JohnHowardsEyebrows watch through Kodi using the SBS Add-on and it’s ad-free

          • @Doowyah: What's different about the Kodi SBS Add-on that makes it ad free?

            • +4

@Borg: From memory (I don't use Kodi anymore), the plugin can source the direct file and avoids the ad breaks.

        • +2

Try with Firefox and the uBlock Origin extension

          • @Skullytor: uBlock works well with firefox but was hoping to block direct from Chromecast TV.

Pihole used to block but that changed and not sure if due to SBS algorithms or if I accidentally deleted an older script that was no longer available to update. I must fish out an old Pihole and see if it blocks and copy the files from it if it still works.

            • @Borg: I provably should have got this at the time.

              https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/783511

              • @G-rig: Not sure as that seems to be only useful for devices that one can install it on and not for the likes of SBS App on Chromecast TV etc. The freebie uBlock works fine for SBS via Firefox.
PiHole however just made it simple (when it worked) no fussing about i.e. no Ad's at all by default using SBS App on devices. Different things/needs I suppose.

                • +1

@Borg: I thought the adguard app does work on the Google TV (just like Nord VPN app can run in the background. You'd have to check the comments in that thread. Even entering the DNS on the phone kills the ads for SBS app, pretty good.

Also use ublock origin, pretty handy. That and windows defender is good enough these days, AV does more halm than good.

@G-rig: Ah ok, will take a look. Thanks.

                  • @G-rig: I downloaded it on tablet to test with SBS App but unfortunately it doesn’t offer Australia on Trial….only France so no way of testing as such. Ah well, I’ll keep an eye on next lifetime sub. Thanks again for pointing it out.

                    • @Borg: Yeah next time I'll probably get it.
Just typing the dns.adguard.com in my phone work well with the SBS app. Or just install kodi (see above). Much more simple interface too.

                      • @G-rig: CORRECTION: Your link above took me to AdGuard VPN — Private Proxy which I installed and it failed. When I logged into Adguard website, I spotted AdGuard Ad Blocker and installed it. That worked. Will muck about some more.

Kodi and SBS App is too much touch and go and a lot of mucking about. I stopped using it a while back due to it being unreliable (for me at least).

                        • @Borg: No worries, yeah I'll have to test that out myself. Kodi seems ok but no doubt stuff will break etc. It's a bit of stuffing around.

                          Cheers

                          • @G-rig: I discover a little (big) trick.
Enable the app, and get the show you want to watch running on SBS App on (in my case) my tablet. Pause the show to save using up freebie D/L Adguard quota. Cast it to (in my case) GoogleTV which opens the SBS app on it. Hey presto, NO Ads.
Now disable Adguard on tablet and it still plays adfree on Chromecast TV. Handy indeed.

                          • @G-rig: OTHER Option: I tested the same using "uBlock Origin" extension for Chrome (doesn't work with Firefox) on a PC.
It could do the same i.e. open the SBS On Demand show on PC (now Ad Free) and cast it AdFree to GoogleTV..

                            • @Borg: Yep good trick, good to know that works.

I use Chrome and the ublock extension, pretty highly recommended.

      • it's not on Netflix.

    • It is when I turn VPN on

    • +34

Some people may not be aware of it.

It's like people posting "deals" for items that have been out of stock for some time coming back into stock.

Or the ad where it was about free bowel cancer tests.

I have no issues with this being posted.

Better than the deals that are just ads with no benefit to anyone.

      • +7

I actually don't mind these even if there not a deal per say, good info imo, feels like in the spirit of OzB. maybe we need a [FYI] tag 😆

    • +13

it's free now but not permanently
SBS purchase broadcast rights for limited time
      so..yes
      I would say it's a deal

    • +2

Brings my attention to a (presumably desirable) product that is available for me to consume at a price that is lower than any other available seller.

As long as posts fit that description I don’t get to narky about whether it fits the explicit definitions.

    • +4

the ozbargain community can upvote whatever they want.. the weekend is always slow for bargains.

    • Please don't let this popular deal lead you to make a decision to leave ozbargain.

    • Have a +1. Agreed. It's free. SBS on demand is free. May as well list each movie on there that appear every month as a deal.

    • Gordon sounds cranky like on Thomas the Tank..

    7.3 on IMDb :/

    • +8

      94% on rotten tomatoes

IMDb isn't a great reference point when looking at movies with subtitles, or movies from other cultures - including Australian movies. The subtleties within those films seem to be lost on that voting audience.

      • +6

Rotten Tomatoes can't be trusted for ratings…

        • Agree that the critics score/'tomatometer' is not to be trusted, but the 'audience score' is usually a good guage.

This movie's audience score is 86. So it's probably a good movie.

          • +2

@metalslaw: With some of the takes people have on RT, I don't understand why you'd trust the user score either. Just find a platform that works for you or, better yet, don't rely solely on an internet number to determine the quality of a film you're yet to see

    • +4

4.0 on Letterboxd and has gradually risen from 3.8 earlier in the year. (Out of 5)

    • +6

      Isn't that good ?

    • +10

IMDB rating is generous in my opinion. The movie seems highly overated. I see it as a snore fest.

The movie seems to be leading somewhere, but the journey doesn't seem worth it.. It is a struggle just to even reach the half way mark.

The main characters don't seem to have any redeeming qualities making it even less enjoyable. Pretty much decided to stop watching halfway in and don't even care. This is actually rare for me which makes me wonder why this movie is being pushed so hard.

        • -5

"I didn't get it and I stopped watching so it's bad" is apparently a valid perspective on here? 🤔

      • +4

I haven't seen it but read a couple of reviews where it all came together in the second half.

Not to sound like an ass but if you haven't watched something til the end are you really best placed to critique it? Some of the best films I've seen come together in the last 10-15 minutes.

  • +3

I like SBS on Demand, but some movies are worth watching in 4K.

    • If only we received foreign films on 4k disc here…

Madman blu-rays are pretty bare bones and lazy these days and they have the rights for distribution here

I think there may be a 4k of Decision To Leave in Germany (might be Italy), but without English subtitles.

      • +6

If you sail the high seas you can get the 4K and the english subs from the bluray release (or another source). Easy peasy.

        • No thanks

          • +1

@Faro: Obviously you should legally the own the movie before that. I think I've bought physical copies of Oldboy 4 or 5 times now.

Anyway, good to see you still posting about good Korean films, keep it up!

  • +5

If I knew how it was going to end, I'd have made the decision to leave the TV off that night.

    • Feelsbad needs feelgood endings to satisfy him?

      • +1

        Something like that!
I should have known though, given that it's a Korean film.

        • +7

Also if you pay attention to some of the more subtle, non-verbal details, almost every significant scene foreshadowed the ending

  • +1

Great movie, watched it on a flight!

    • 😲

  • Will watch tonight thanks

    • Verdict?

      • Meh too drawn out, not for me

        • Check out bloodhounds on Netflix

  • Finally, it's available for streaming in Australia! I shared the link with my partner this afternoon, highly recommend this movie.
