Buying a Product I Intend to Return after Use

I need the use of a powered tree trimmer (the ones with the long handles), but I only really need it once.
I had the thought of buying one, using it and taking it back. I will say it didn't work well for what I needed it for.
Has anyone done this before and should I feel bad?
Fyi I will get it from Bunnings.

  • This is such a dick move. Reminds me of girls/ladies buying a $500 dress from Myers/DJ just to wear it for the night to a prom/wedding party and returning it the next day claiming that it doesn't fit.

Dont worry Karma will get you in some way which you will pay more for it.

  • Wow. Just wow.
    Karma is inescapable.
g'head. Stick it to da man.

  • WHAT DOES BUNNINGS DO WITH THESE USED RETURNS ?

    • I COULD TELL YOU BUT I"M A LITTLE HOARSE ATM.

  • They won't accept the return just because it wasn't suitable. You'll be stuck with it. Been there done that.

So considering everyone here has the highest of morals - do you use the referral system on ozbargain?
Isn't the company having to pay free money to 2 parties that have never met gaming the system?

I tend to think they're paying for eyeballs and increased business rather than 'friends helping friends' - referrals just being the way they generate 'word of mouth' rather than paying for an advertisment that may or may not get eyeballs, a referral e.g. ANZ plus only pays when it performs.

I think it would be interesting to see your post's responses if it was something that could be sold as new after return - e.g. "I only need a specific spanner then I'll return it with no wear and tear"

Didn’t neg you, but it’s really not the same IMO. The companies are still getting a new customer, which is what they care about. For them it is still a net positive. As much as I hate Bunnings, it seems what you’re proposing seems to be a net negative for the Bunnings.

There are varying degrees of what you may consider moral or immoral. For example, some people don’t consider pirating stealing while others do. I think it seems the majority of people that have commented thinks what you’re proposing is on the dodgy side.

    • Not the same.

Using a refferal to get a discount/bonus on a service can be the deciding factor on somebody actually making a purchase.
The companies recognise this - they also recognise that customers they already have are worth much more $$ wise than trying to get more new customers.

Referral system works in two ways -
      1. They get a new customer
      2. They reward a customer they already had: Increasing loyalty, increasing customer retention, and increasing liklihood that this new customer will refer more people.

I understand what you are saying: that by using a referral system, the company may lose money that if it wasn't for OzBargain, they may have had (the customer might have paid full price). But on the flip side - that customer may not have even purchased the item/service without the referral.

Its like searching for coupon codes before checking out. Maybe they have got a discount on things they would've bought even if they didnt have a coupon, but maybe not.

The companies aren't stupid - and there are some companies that require unique referrals for each person which can help prevent mass spamming of referral codes.

and getting a discount is not as damaging to bottom line as not getting the customer at all. Plus, customers feel more rewarded/loyal after getting a good deal on something, which is another bonus to the business.

  • How many girls do you think by dresses, and return them?

It's probably one of the biggest cost killers in running a business.

Unfortunately these people run deep globally.

I have noticed companies are adjusting return policies, I've even seen people get warnings.

    • This is true.

And I feel like most people do it because they think "It's not hurting anyone", and "the company makes so much money it wont affect them".
      Same with people who shoplift.
Whether through ignorance or just lack of care - I think a lot of people wouldn't stop to think about the reprocussions of how a business absorbs these costs… by increasing overall prices / cutting costs to make up for the losses.

  • Remmie, How dishonest of you. Absolutely disappointing.

Luckily for you, I will let my family member and the other staff know to expect you, should their store be the one you attend.

(Don't parents raise their children to be honest these days?)

Now that you have made this public, perhaps a smart online sleuth can track and nail you for Fraud if you were go ahead.

We already know you are in Melbourne, Altona North area, drive a Pajero, new housing under 5yrs old from an owner/builder, are a couple at least…"we", perhaps still into bicycling, and I am fairly Computer illiterate. Imagine a PI!

Please, just be honorable and pay your way fairly. Surely you can phone a friend to borrow one…..yes?

Shoplifting and Fraud are huge reasons for higher retails…so you are making it worse for everyone including yourself.

    • They posted here without compunction.I wonder why?
It probably explains why other Ozb members get burned buying stuff that turns out to be one of these deliberate feral scam returns.

  • Hire one or buy a cheap second hand one instead of this douche bag idea.

Alright people, I haven't actually done it… and have been convinced there are much better ways to get the use of one. Chill.

  • I was sold an electric lawn mower from Bunnings that when I opened up the box, found it had dirt on the wheels and grass clipping remnants on the catcher. Also it was missing the battery charger. I took it back and got it replaced with an actual new one, but it was a real hassle to do with a newborn baby in our household.
    Don't be that person.

  • Doing this, not ok!

Having 85 extended family and friends on one Netflix membership, totally cool😄

As is gaming the 7/11 fuel lock.

    Funny old world!

  • OP seems to have gotten their answer. Thread will be closed .
