Didn't you used to sell proper cases? When did it become 16x375mL?

    • +2

They keep 4 for Dad and 4 for Dave

    • Yeah that almost caught me. Was going to get some stuff then bailed once I did the “real” math.

    • Hey HomebrewFC, our retailers prefer 16 packs. Removing 1/3rd of the beer means we reduced the price of the cases by 1/3rd. So nothing has changed on pricing.
      Cheers,
      Dave

      • Interesting! I always assumed craft beer shifting to 16 was “this beer is expensive. How can we make the price more palatable?”

Someone should write a book on the beer industry. Would be interesting af.

          This is no book but…

I think that's often the goal with the 4-packs. A $20 4 pack is a $30 six pack, so it looks more palatable. Its also worth noting can/drink sizes too.

There's the classic european vs Aussie beer size, with 300mL vs 375mL. Over a carton (24) that means 8L vs 9L in the carton. A few craft breweries have been using weird sizes, particularly the psudo-craft (bought out by another company) ones. I've seen sizes like 335, 345 and 350mL used. As well as 440mL (looks closer to a 500mL can). It sucks a bit as it makes doing the maths on it really annoying. I tend to preference beers that keep to standard sizes now, on principal as there's usually plenty of options anyway.

For the 16-24 carton conversion, its arguable that its 4x4 packs so that's how it works, or maybe its a more "palatable" cost. Which is a bit like the 10 packs of bourbon or something like that. Imo its probably just part of the marketing. To convert the 16 pack cost to an equiv 24 pack cost, multiply by 1.5. So a carton that costs $50 for a 16 pack, has an equiv cost of $75 which is pretty standard for a lot of craft beers.

Labels and pricing gets confusing though it could be $ per mL and I've heard some argue for a label that has $ per standard drink lol but I don't know if that'd promote responsible drinking, although it'd make it a lot easier to figure out haha.
