Dishwasher Recommendations Please

Currently have a 2 year old LG dishwasher*, but it has has had a lot of issues lately, so the service person recommended a replacement to LG who instead said they would authorise a return/store credit via Appliances Online (the merchant I originally bought with).

Haven't been too impressed with the cleaning and drying performance overall and the cutlery tray (first time we've had one with that), so am leaning towards a different brand as I'm reluctant to get the exact same model in case it has the same issues again.

Does anybody have any dishwasher recommendations? Bosch seems to be rated highly, but the service person says downside is parts are expensive out of warranty.

The majority of the popular/highly rated are Bosch it seems…

Thanks in advance for any recommendations

*mainly got it because it matched our fridge and had hidden buttons. 🤦

Bosch seems to be rated highly, but the service person says downside is parts are expensive out of warranty.

Because they don’t break often and you don’t buy parts when they break. You buy new.
I only buy Bosch appliances and they last at least 7+ years.

    • I do have a Bosch Washing machine. Can't say I'm that impressed with it either, maybe my expectations were too high? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Mine's still kicking from 2004 lol.

You have jinxed it now. It will be leaking next week

Work well for me, had purchased the white colored one https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/euromaid-60cm-fr… back in 2021 for $330 devliered, so the price has gone up quite a bit since then. It's been running every second day since without missing a beat. I use the chemist warehouse dishwasher tablets (100 pack $16 - might be a bit more now), and it cleans well every time.

I have a bosch one that I used while I was living in my previous apartment, performance not memorable (nothing bad, nothing fantastic about it, just does the job), but I do remember having to send dishes for a second wash cycle, or rewashing them by hand on occasion which is something I've not had to do with the Euromaid

Bosch fan here, have a serie 6 dishwasher and a washing machine. With dishes, I feel it helps to put some soap in the open apart from the pocket in the door.

    • Yes, the LG manual says to do this also.

    • +1

Yep, 8 year old Bosch Serie 6 here too. 8 years going strong and while it's started to have a E:22 errors (which is about the pump not working) I'm somewhere between ageing pump and kids who pack the dishwasher without first taking chunks off the plate… I'm not saying you need to rinse to nearly clean, but not putting half a plate of pasta in there might help :P

We also had some broken glass make its way through the system. In any case, this is my 3rd one across 3 houses and 15 years or so and I've never even looked at anything else when I needed a replacement and have never had to replace a Bosch unit yet!

And yes to using powder over tablets (as it's much cheaper) and yes to putting a little in the door for the initial rinse cycle.

    Mine is a Haier.

It cleans well, drying is good except in the concave bottom of mugs and stuff that nothing can dry. I got it in October 2021, so can't speak for longevity.

    • +2

I never leave my mugs vertical, always a bit leaning. Helps the water fall off the concave underside. Also helps that I finish the wash before bedtime and leave the door open all night. Stops the dishwasher smelling muggy in the morning.

I always time mine for super off peak power. 1am at my place is an appliance Disneyland (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, car charge all come on)

    Bosch

I need a new dishwasher as well and damn people are saying Bosch, guess Ill look for Bosch now ahha

when we renovated our kitchen we put in a whirlpool our 1st dishwasher we were happy but it only lasted 2-3 years we replaced it with a Westinghouse and were much happier but it only lasted 3-4 years before needing major repairs we now have had a Bosch series 6 for about 6-7 years and are very happy and will buy Bosch again

  • +3

My vote is for Fisher and Paykel dishdrawer. If you dont run full loads, it's awesome.
Had one in our last place for well over 10 years, never missed a beat. Will be putting one into our new kitchen.
New series about to be released.

    • +1

We run full loads…sometimes more than once a day 😔

      • +1

Yeah then definitely want a single large load machine.

  • +1

    I've had 2 dishwashers.
The best by far was the Euromaid DR14s
Best $400 i ever spent, 7 years later still cleans everything perfectly, zero issues. Yes it wasn't fancy but the reviews don't lie, it's cheap, reliable af and just works well.

Replaced a 4 year old ASKO that never washed well and kicked the bucket early after flooding half the kitchen.

We have the cheapest Bosch dishwasher and it does a good job. Have had new Miele and Smeg dishwashers (cheapest models) in previous rentals and I don't find there's much difference between them

    • +1

Having said that, I find I need to use the intensive wash on all 3 to get a decent wash

  • +2

Another Bosch Series 6 owner here (cheapest made in Germany model). Had a Miele before and whilst the Miele had some advantages, I've found the Bosch perfectly adequate/hassle free at around 1/2 the price of an equivalent Miele.

  • +1

We bought a Bosch SMS40E08AU earlier this year for $650 delivered (net was 10% cheaper with GC's). Not as cheap as the sub $500 it's been a couple of years ago, but It's been great and it's easy to install yourself.

It replaced a 20 year old Asko - parts were expensive to replace based on the troubleshooting; and we decided to get a new one.

  • +2

My family and I have only owned Miele and can highly recommend. I do note that many rate Bosch too but have to be mindful of where the appliance is made as some made from Eastern European countries dont seem to have the quality versus the German made.

  • +1

    Aldi. Zero issues so far.

  • +3

If you can afford it Miele, if not Bosch.

  • +1

Spanish built Bosch SMS40E18AU/80 heat pump has just failed after 8.5 years of use. $185 pump is on the way, hoping to get another 4 years.
Do about 10 loads per week

We have Bosch series 8 for a couple of years. Love it. Really, really quiet. Has the 2 main shelves plus a thin third one at the top for utensils (tongs, whatever).
Having said that, we loved our Bosch fridge too, but after 8 years it had issues that the repairer couldn't work out. I wasn't impressed by that.

  • +1

I can recommend a $300 GVA dishwasher Or Bosch $1000 one, they are both still going strong for 10+ years and doing a good job. Although some of the racks in GVA getting second-hand. However, the Westinghouse dishwasher was sux. If you have money, go for Bosch.

  • +1

We have a Bosch series 6 and very happy with it.

Prior to that we had Fisher and Paykel Dishdrawers for about 15years. We were also very happy with them, only had repairs once after about 11-12 years but were fixed at no cost to us as had been a recall on them.

  • +3

Our Miele dish washer, made in 1987!, is still going and cleans well. It was in the house when we bought it 17 years ago and have never had to service it or get it repaired.

I like Bosch too. Our Bosch washing machine is 15 years old with no problems. I actually wish it would die as I want to get a bigger one, but cant justify it when it still works well.

  • +4

Make sure you can fit a wine glass in the top and a dinner plate in the bottom at the same time whilst clearing the spray arms. Surprisingly it seems only about 10% of dishwashers can do this as the top tray moves up or down so it's one or the other at a time.

As standard all Bosch washers can do this…

    • +1

      So true

  • +2

Bosch. Ours gets run 1-3 times per day on a full load and has done so for the last 4 years. If it failed tomorrow I wouldn't even be mad, it deserves a state funeral.

We also have a Bosch front load washer, about 10 years old. Repaired once I think, although the automatic washing liquid dosing has stopped working (probably our fault, and we use powder now anyway).

  • I buy Miele directly from their factory outlet esp the model with the cutlery drawers. Have had many Bosch in the past and they’re ok but no as durable. If you can’t get to the outlet, then Bosch is my next up. Don’t forget with consumer guarantees you should be able to get 3-5 years of “manufacturer engagement” with a $2k dishwasher.

We moved from a high-end LG to a high-end Bosch. Wish we'd done it years ago. The Bosch is better in every way. Here's what we got: https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/bosch-60cm-freestanding-dishw…

  • We have gone Bosch (series 6) and now won't go back. People that load dishwashers should understand how the water is distributed and which way the arms spin so they can make sure everything gets a decent amount of spray. Then everything washes well

    • Is it quiet to run? The 5 year warranty is attractive. How's it going with being dry after finished? Does it clean well? Any problems

      • +1

Yes, runs quiet. Has an internal fan to assist drying and works well except for the usual plastic tubs etc. Cleans exceptionally well, had it over 12 months and no issues at all, very happy with it.

  • I went to good guys yesterday and two sales rep said to get an 'built in' dishwasher vs a 'free standing' dishwasher.

In-built apparent is 'better' due to the air circulation under the dishwasher as free standing doesnt thus the dishes will be dryer quicker and the smell will be better eliminated that the standard free standing dishwashers.

I wanted Bosch but its around $1799 and that's way over my budget for a built in if I was to go by their word.

With people's experience, would you buy a built in or free standing dishwasher in general?

    • Sounds like BS to me. What does air circulation under a sealed tub have to do with anything drying quicker/slower?

      • +1

I thought so too, I am sure these 'features' are well intended and I am sure it works to justify a bump in price. But I don't need my dishwasher to sanitise and to dry faster, I leave the door open if I want it to dry faster lol.

2 sales rep were keen for my to buy a built in version, either Bosch or LG and I'm like….. nah ill think about it.

But it's like the debate of ovens where ovens now have self cleaning functions and other sanitary functions that increases the price quite a bit. Think they're called pyrolytic ovens.

  • +1

Seems to be a lot of people with series 6 Bosch dishwashers on here. I can also highly recommend.

  • Sigh, so after all this, AO don't have the Bosch in stock for a few weeks, so I ended up just getting the LG again 🤦

Thanks for everyone's feedback anyway. Will definitely look to get a Bosch at the next opportunity.

  • I see everyone is recommending Bosch, but from what I see they all have a cutlery basket. As a family of 6, I don't think that would be practical and would look to have a separate cutlery rack, without the basket, is there any Bosch model that does that?
