Not only that allowed people to get internet where it was impossible.

        • -6

you should perhaps look in your own backyard

Didn't the whites come and rape and beat the local people of Australia?
But hey thats all water under the bridge?
It is clear that somewhere in the vicinity of 100 million people died prematurely at the height of British colonialism

I dont see you crying about that?

@lltravel: So Australia was colonised and thats why you worship a heinous horrible waste of a oxygen that has done more harm than any CEO alive?

                  • @RetroMetro: Ofc a cult follower would say that. What next? trump is a good business man? hitler is the best humanitarian?

                    • @bigpoppa: I'm not actually an Elon Musk simp I'm just wandering what has you soo triggered lmao

Correction. He may have contributed to the good ideas, but the actual hard work to implement those ideas was almost certainly done by others.

For the record, Starlink is great. It's been a game changer for providing decent, usable networking communications to remote locations in my line of work.

        • thats like saying the creator of apple had the idea but it was others that made the product

          your argument is invalid.

People can come up with great ideas all day long, its how its implemented, scaled etc
You do know he funded the whole project right?
          Started with paypal

I have an idea for time travel, does it mean i know how to do it? no

        • It's a strange argument… it's technically correct.. but it's totally incorrect!

The fact that he's not a left-wing/greenie/Champagne socialist cuck means he needs supporting. The left-wing elites hate him - which means he's on the right track.

      • better to be a socialist cuck than to be a right wing terrorist who spreads their anus and getting ploughed from both ends

          You'd rather be a cuck?

Fair enough. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

          • @R4: I mean if you're game enough to spread you're anus and get ploughed on both ends then it's only fair

            • @bigpoppa: In bigpoppaland only

              • @R4: ofc you're more than welcome in bigpoppaland

Just FYI, i pressed the button but it said "24-hours limit for voting negative on comments is currently capped at 5"

  • Roaming costs $174/mo

    • Is there any prorata? Will using it for a few days cost $174? (or ~$20 etc?)

      • +1

        Is there any prorata?

You have a fixed monthly billing cycle. If you pause it, you keep getting service for the rest of billing period. And have to pay pro-rata for that period, whether its 1 day to the end of the month, or 29. Then at the end of the billing cycle it pauses, until you restart it.

So if your billing period starts on the 1st of the month, and you want to use it for a month starting on the 15th, you'd restart it on the 15th, and pay immediately prorata for the rest of that month, then pay again for a whole month on the 1st of the next month. And the service would only pause at the end of that month.

The minimum you can pay for is the rest of the billing month, wherever you happen to be in it.

      • No, one month is one month

  • Does this work on balcony cabin of a cruise ship?

    • +2

If you upgraded to the roam global plan possibly. It’s $300 a month. However I’ve heard that cruise ships would take it off you at check in. They’re known to do that for people that have tried other comms and internet equipment in the past apparently.

      • +1

Thank you very much for sharing.

    • unlikely given you will be at sea and Starlink has GPS

      • What do you mean?

    OOS. Unavailable Online :(

  • +2

My understanding is that the router bundled with this revision of the dish no longer has a ethernet port, and requires a separate adaptor purchase if you require one. (Which is obviously something to consider if the bundled router's wifi isn't quite decent enough to cover your property adaquately)

    • Correct. But the ethernet adapter is about 40 bucks or so from memory. Nothing incredibly expensive.

    • correct but the wifi on the supplied hardware is pretty good

  • Just went to order and OOS.

  • Can we bring this one to cruise?

  • OOS

  • Where are you supposed to put this? Does it need 360 degree view of the sky, or will 180 work?

    • Your roof

    • Does it need 360 degree view of the sky, or will 180 work?

It needs to have 'visibility' of any of the 4646 Satellites in the sky at any given time: https://satellitemap.space/

  • Does anyone know what the difference between this and the Starlink Business hardware?

    • +2

      $3740 - $199 = $3541
      Faster + "more consistent service"

  • Can you sign up FROM the device?

My idea is to buy the hardware and sit on it, then activate ROAM when and if I am outside of reception (camping etc)

    • no, unless you have some other way of the app talking to the internet

  • +1

Can I take this overseas to use in a different country where Starlink is available, including signing up to local Starlink plans in that country?

    • +1

Yes you can but you need to be on the global roam plan for that. It’s $300 a month. Unaware if you could take this hardware and then sign up to a local plan there.

  • Now says out of stock… that was quick..

Went from Myrepublic to Superloop and have been with Starlink for 3 months now. Very normal winter here in the southwest of Western Australia and never have any drop-outs due to weather conditions. Average speed is between 100-200 and no peak time throttle back. In the end you pay for what you get and I won't be going back with any NBN providers anytime soon. Very happy with Starlinks quality connection. The only issue I had to work around was the ridiculous plug on the cable from dish to router. Not ideal feeding that through a brick cavity wall!

    • +1

I agree I am rural with really no other choice. Those who bagged it out come from the NFI(no frigging idea) tribe.

  • +1

I’m very much in metro Melbourne. Put my address into the Starlink website and it’s saying only $199 for the hardware from them.

I have gigabit NBN cable, but at this price I’m somewhat keen to get one and have put it in pause. Who knows when it might come in handy. We’ve had multi day NBN outages before when cables have been cut.

Edit: It only comes up with $199 if I select the residential option. If I select Roam, it shows $599 for the hardware

    • Who knows when it might come in handy. We’ve had multi day NBN outages before when cables have been cut.

Do you own a mobile phone?

  • Wonder would this work if one travels overseas. This will then mostly remove the need to buy international sim cards or pay for roaming.

    • +2

Carting it with you everywhere would be a pain. Setting it up at your AirBnb/Hotel could be a pain, they should hopefully already have wifi included. You'd still want a sim for when you're out and about doing tourist stuff.

Short answer, no I don't think it's worth it.

      • Thank you. You make a good point.

    • Yes if you move on to the global roam plan. $300 a month. I think the international sims are going to be the better option lol.

    • This will then mostly remove the need to buy international sim cards or pay for roaming.

a travel sim or buying a sim in-country is about $30/month and pretty everywhere has free wifi these days. That has to beat carting a satellite dish around with you on holiday.

    Back in stock.

  • If it is bought here and shipped overseas i.e. Hong Kong, would it works? What IP would it show if it works?
