While this isn't my favourite headphone in this price range, it's still a very solid price for an old favourite for many. Doesn't have the resolution of the HD 560s - and definitely not the 600 series - but delivers a wide soundstage with good imaging and timbre, and a nice bit of bass warmth.

Very widely reviewed, consider this against the HIFIMAN HE400SE non-Stealth (sold out of China).

AU stock, but seems to be getting fuelled by a US Prime deal, so expect this to extend into July 13th. Enjoy!

  • Jass, idk if this is an area of expertise for you or not - I'm after a simple but good quality amp to drive a couple bookshelf speakers and my AT-LP5 turntable (has a preamp built-in).

I know much less about modern amps than headphones, hoping you or someone else can chime in with a rec! Budget <~$500

Very comfortable headphone, good overall sound quality for daily use.
    Was cheaper before.

When? This is an all-time low on OzB and Amazon. Might be thinking of the 569 and 579, but they're not really up to this level.

      • +1

Agree. Cheapest I can remember. They are very honest headphones, particularly if you are not plugging them into a dedicated amp.

What a great deal. These cans are brilliant, i have the original 599 in the creme/brown

    • I like the brown version like yours over the black version. Too bad they aren't on sale :(

  • if i have the philips x2hr, should I buy this or save up to buy the hd 6xx for casual music listening? can't resist the good deals…

    • 6XX is definitely something you want to have in your headphone collection, though if you've not got a good closed back, cast your eye over to the Audeze Maxwell.

  • Can anyone compare against the old HD595? I've got PC360 and PC37X, and since I'm no audiophile those sound great until I compare side by side with my HD595, then they sound muddy. But my HD595 are really showing their age.

Assuming you've already tried replacing the pads on your 595? The 599 are fairly similar, and I would recommend the HD 6XX as an upgrade despite being over twice the price, unless your headphones are for highly competitive FPS as a priority.

Otherwise if you're sticking to this price range and you want something substantial or different, I'd suggest the HIFIMAN HE400SE non-stealth via AliExpress, or maybe an IEM like the Truthear Hexa.

If you want to stick with the Sennheiser 500 series, maybe wait for the HD 560S to return to the $200-$240 mark on sale, hopefully at some point this year. That's an actual upgrade vs the 595/598/599.

Ok, good shout. I'm a sucker for Sennheiser and should branch out. Will probably keep an eye out for the HIFIMAN HE400SE to try out planar. Or as you said, wait for the HD 560S.

Aside from media consumption, these will be for gaming and chatting on Discord, and I can't stand how IEMs sound when talking. Just can't get used to them. I've tried with the KZ ZS10 PRO X.

Definitely wait for the 560S if you don't mind open-back headphones, they are stellar quality and worth every cent.

          • @imtheonewhoknocks: Do the 560S need a DAC? If so, would an Apple USB C DAC be enough?

            • +2

@tonyamazing: I run mine through an audio interface, but from looking online you can easily drive these from a phone/laptop without a need for a DAC.

          • @imtheonewhoknocks: I’ve been waiting for a sale price on these bad boys for a good year plus.. has to happen eventually, right?

  • Will the Fosi Audio Q4 DAC AMP or the Topping DX1 be a good driver for this?

    • I'd honestly rather a dongle at that price point and then you take your time figuring out a desktop setup. Here's a goodun.
