I like, but no local tapo for HA

    • What do you mean, please?

      • +3

"HA" = Home Assistant, a locally hosted smart home ecosystem that ties various brands together so you don't have to use a million different apps to turn your lights on and off. It doesn't appear that this "Tapo" range has a Home Assistant integration*. No Home Assistant = No Buy

*There appears to be a HACS integration for it but it seems flakey so it's not worth the trouble when there's plenty of other options on the market

        • Great to know — Thank you!

I have 8 of these connected to my HA, integrated with Prometheus and displayed the metrics in Grafana. So far no issue.

Hacs integration seems to work ok and ive not seen any issues. Would just prefer not to have to talk outside my network to get information on a device on my local network..

I'm curious as I've been using HA for a while, and kinda gave up on it for a bit and I'm now coming back to it.
I've got a dedicated NUC with a Zigbee USB device to allow me to use both Zigbee and wi-fi smart devices.

What would you say is a better option to this and that would allow me to use my network exclusively to monitor power consumption in addition to be able to remotely power on and off on a timer/schedule? (The power consumption monitoring is critical for me, tbh).

          Thanks!

    • No local = no deal

The merros ones have local support with a bit of fiddling around in HA but is missing the usage monitor support when doing so. They are currently on the prime sale for about $48.30 for 4 which makes them cheapish but they are so freaking big.
        https://github.com/albertogeniola/meross-homeassistant/issue…

Im using that merros one atm for my terrarium day and night for the uvb light and im using the tapo for my EV to charge during offpeak time on the standard charger. Both have been working well and reliably but have thier strengths and weaknesses. Just unlucky i invested in the ones i got. When they stop working id probably look for something that is a decent size, has local HA support with all functions and reasonably priced. Anyone have any suggestions?

        • I'll be following responses to your post closely, as I'd like to know, too.

I have the older TP-LINK models (HS110) and they are so freaking fat they kill the 2 outlets next to them, even on wider-spaced power boards.
          Thanks.

for the same price you can get one with 2 USB from another brand from Big W and it went on sales twice in past the few months.

I've had 3 fail within a year of usage :(

    $17 a few days back

Neg wasn’t me but I think the $17 is the version that doesn’t do consumption monitoring. Looks exactly the same

(profanity) TP Link, their smart brand used to be Kasa, I had a buggy experience with their smart bulbs, then they changed their app from Kasa to Tapo and they aren't compatible anyway, way to screw your consumers TP Link

    • I have one from Origin - Kasa - your comment suggest I'm going to need a second app for these then and no use for Origin Spike integration? Need to cancel my order!

Logged in just to say - local works just fine with HA! I have 10 of these on a internet blocked vlan and it works perfectly with the p100 hacs plugin. Way faster switching locally than via cloud too

    • so are you using this plugin?: https://github.com/petretiandrea/home-assistant-tapo-p100

      Warning!!!
Although the integration works using LAN, the tapo device needs internet access to synchronize with tapo cloud, especially for credentials, a missing internet access could lead into "Invalida authentication error". Also a static IP must be set for device.

  • Had several of these going since launch, never an issue, and firmware updates as well

Couple of spares in the drawer.

I just go and hand $27 to JB Hifi anytime i want more, that way im not propping up Bezos in his penis shaped rocket so he can go and edge himself in space. Truly awful human being, basically a modern day sweatshop/slave driver. We dont do Amazon here.

In better news, i also trigger and manage these via python, even have them toggleable by my Streamdeck (compiled windows python exes of custom scripts)
