Citizen Promaster Eco-Drive Radio Controlled JY8074-11X $449 Delivered @ Starbuy

110

If you're into radio-controlled watches then this might be for you. The only trouble is we don't have a radio signal in AU so your best option is to leave it outside on a clear night and point the antenna (which I think is under the 9 o'clock position) towards Japan. Apparently this works for a lot of the mainland.

As a bonus it's also an Eco-Drive so powering it will be cheap, easy, and close to a lifetime. I personally think the dial and complications make a little too 'busy' for my tastes, but it's an interesting watch nonetheless.

(Let's see if WatchNerd beats me by three minutes again…)

Thanks been waiting for a deal on this. My Seiko Astron is getting a bit lonely. It is fugly, but you can't beat the amount of features you get for this price.

I use an app called jjy emulator to set accurate time on my Astron. The app emulates the radio tower signal from Japan and works with all radio controlled watches.

    • I've seen the recent Series 5 models of Astron at Watson's and thought they looked interesting, but they're certainly a lot more expensive. Would that emulator work for radio-controlled, too? I have a friend who owns a Casio that doesn't always get the signal from Japan (he's the one who told me about trying it on a clear night).

      • I have the JDM FL5 Astron, and that did capture signal from Japan a few times.
The jjy app and website works for all radio controlled watches. Basically I put my watch in a plastic tub with the app open, phone speaker on max and watch in manual reception mode. Works every time.

For more radio signal goodness, I found a couple of Seikos that I put into this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/787004

  • I have the other model. It captures the signals from Japan i think.. i might be wrong.

In the old shortwave days when I used that radio for clocks, the clearest tones and chimes were from the U.S. in Hawaii, putting me ~ 0.03 seconds behind.
