Dyson Cord-Free Range Update Table

Hi all, even though I've left Dyson I figured I may as well update my spec table for the dyson cord-free range in case people had questions at all.

TL/DR takeaways for your benefit:

Weight

Has jumped from 3.6KG to 3.9KG compared to the previous Outsize. Given that the regular Gen 5 is considered heavy by some, I would recommend people DON'T buy this model without first trying instore.

Power

Suction is down from 262AW to 250AW compared to the regular Gen 5. With this, and the 25% wider carpet head (fluffy optic hardfloor head is the same size as normal) you're sacrificing suction, whilst spreading it over a larger area - this is likely to negatively affect suction to the floor.

Price

Price is at an all time high of $1,649 for the Absolute, or $1,699 for the Copper/Blue unit with the dock.

Summary: The Gen 5 Outsize is more expensive, less powerful, heavier and much more awkward than the older Gen 5 model. I recommend against this model - the bigger bin may sound appealing, you'll use it less often than a smaller, more convenient vacuum, negating much of the benefit and convenience.

Most families will be much better off with the smaller, lighter and cheaper Gen 5 or V15 units. If you are interested in buying, try instore first to ensure it is comfortable Consider your use case (i.e. will you clean the car, dust the house etc) - if you are cleaning anything other than the floor, you are going to find this vacuum very heavy.

Thanks for sharing! It would help to add "year released" to the above table.

    • I'll be sure to do so in the next update. From what I've heard there's an update to the accessories of some models coming soon

      • That's good news! Would love to get the floor dok and detailing kit for the Gen5.

        Thanks for these posts.

        • Do you have a Gen5 already? The only way to get the floor dock at this stage is by buying the Gen5 complete (copper/blue) sadly

          • @Anthropomorphised: Yeah, picked an Absolute up for just under $1k from JB about 6 weeks ago.

The Floor Dock would be perfect but was not worth the price difference since the Complete doesn't seem to go on sale, or at least not to the same extent. I was hoping when you said there was likely to be an update to accessories that might include availability of a Floor Dock for the Gen5 Absolute.

            • @Arsenal: Sadly not to my knowledge. Dyson should really start stocking the replacement part to enable it, it’s just the battery holder they’d need to replace

  • Thanks OP, this is very interesting!

  • Great post, thanks!

  • Nice one

    Thanks OP!

  • Gee we've got a V8 from ages ago and haven't ever really thought it's underpowered.

Suction has come a long way since then! 2.5x more is pretty insane.

Suction will be even higher in future. They are at a point where they'll likely use an air bleed valve to prevent floor clamping in future models

  • The Dyson Expert is back.

This time without a social media policy or my employment status to worry about ;)

  • Great work, this should be useful in my search to replace our failing v8.

The info here does trigger a sore point though with my research where the figures for Max Suction and battery life are always displayed near each other where they aren't actually relevant to each other. You would think finding the suction power for the standard modes would be available but it never seems to be.
