Believe this is a good price for a very light large suitcase, was looking to get one for a while and finally pulled the trigger before our trip when I saw this was on sale, can use Qantas points to make it even cheaper.

weight?
It's also the ease of pushing newer suitcases especially in European streets. Newer ones take so much less effort.
I feel like that has more to do with wheel diameter than the age of the case.
@bigspike: and ball bearings ABEC rating
Well, I carry a bit extra round the middle, but I feel that is age related.
Good luck explaining this at the counter of budget airlines when you have that extra kilo or three
2.75kg
Just fyi, 81cm is actually oversize for many carriers. Though in real world, they care more about weight than size.
nani…?
I have a luggage thats this size. Originally thought they would pull me up on that when i first used it. 3 or 4 trips later using the luggage and i can confirm. All they care is the weight.
Correct, and we're currently on holiday with 2x 81cm cases, but figured it might need a psa 🙂
You are right to mention it. At some airports, they can actually be picky. But from a practical point of view, the biggest issue is that a suitcase this large will likely end up overweight. Additionally, if you pack this suitcase to its maximum extent, the massive weight will likely result in damage to the suitcase. Just speaking from experience; whenever we packed close to 30kg in a 74cm suitcase, we found it really suffered in transit.
I'm done with Samsonite's - the last 2-3 bags have been damaged by the carrier - but unfortunately no one is able to fix it.
- One: The wheel fell off AFTER I left the Terminal, so the Airline refused to do anything about it.
- Two: The corner where the wheel is was pushed inwards. The airline paid for the bag (70% value) but no one would or could fix it, even authorized centers.
- Three - Bag cracked.
They try to pin it on the airlines as well each time.
I'll probably get a July bag next, i've had the carry one and the wheels and build are FAR better so far.
ironically, i find the american tourister to be holding up better than my wifes who has this even though both owned by samsonite. that said it does weigh like 50% more (extra 1.5kg or somethign)
I read that as "holding up better than my wife" haha
I've had 2x Samsonite's damaged in transit (major crack), but both were replaced by the carrier (SIA and MAS). My latest Samsonite has only suffered minor damage in transit which I didn't bother to claim. Also these two previous claims were done pre-Covid, not sure if things are much harder now.
i have seen many rampers grab cases at the load belt by a handle and one wheel. Can't be good for it.
FWIW, there are equivalent cases from chinese OEMs at ~$150 AUD.
Links pls
sorry just went to check and realized it's a bit smaller - maxes out at 28 inch/71 cm: taobao link if you're still interested.
anecdotally, great quality.
Gotta factor in the international shipping for something of this size and/or the 2 months+ forward shipping time too.
@vawiyoci: yep, already factored in ~$40 aud for shipping. best to check other sites like ebay/ae if they have lower item+shipping price.
Soft cases any day. These samsonite hard cases dont last. And if wheels break or come off, they will say not covered under warranty as its wear and tear. So I dont get it why people still buy overpriced luggage.
What do you do if you need to pack suits for work? Soft cases will mean creased suits right?
Using Qantas points to buy a suitcase is not a bargain.
Who said anything about using points?
Would've been a bargain if it actually was 540 points.
Go read the description
Samsonite is good but only worth it for cabin luggage. For check in, it's out of your control. Cheap n exxy brands all gets tossed about.
Seen lots of people buy light & expensive luggage, then adding extra weight by covering them with protective cover or plastic wrapping them.
I personally just buy cheap luggage for check-ins and reasonable one for carry onmain part is wheels. as long as the wheels are decent i think its fair game.
last thing you want to dragging the suitcase across the floor cos of the wheels got jammed/broken during transit/holidaying
I don't quite get the oppertunity cost here. I have a case that I got on sale for under a hundred. It goes on about 15 plane rides a year and is over 5 years old.
This case may indeed last 25 plus years, but I have to pay up front. Is it worth the extra up front? That is a lot of smashed avo I could have on toast in the meantime.
