Buying EV Interstate for Subsidy

Hi guys,

Anyone have experience buying an EV in QLD where the subsidy is $6,000 and driving it to VIC where the subsidy is now cut.

Any problems with this?

Errr… wouldn’t you need to be a QLD resident?

    • So rent a studio for 1 month, update residential address there, buy EV, then "move" back to your current address?

It'd cost you more in all the futsing around than the rebate is worth… getting your licence reissued etc, plus the residency would likely need to be more than a month to get everything sorted.

I joked about doing this when I got mine, but really not a viable option. Keeping it registered interstate to avoid the Victoria tax on the other hand… (no, I did not do this, novated lease and all that)

        • Update- no Victoria tax anymore!

    Am I eligible?

The ZEV Rebate Scheme is open to:

    • All Queensland residents with a current and valid Queensland driver license (international and interstate driver licences will not be accepted) or another form of evidence to prove residency
    • Queensland registered businesses

    Also

    How to apply

You will require the following documents to submit your application online.

Applications for both individual and business applicants:

    • Valid and current Queensland Driver Licence (for businesses, please provide business contact's driver licence)
    • Evidence of residential address (e.g. copy of utility or electricity bill)

Added to all of this, to obtain the higher $6,000 rebate, you need to prove your household income is under $180,000, combined, and your vehicle is under $68,000.

      Which one hasn't been?

    Lots of problems lol

  • Any problems with this?

Yes. Even if your plan succeeds you’ll still be a subject of Dan Andrews.

Yes. The battery won't last the drive from QLD to VIC.

  • Any issue with a family member in queensland buying it, and transferring?

      Double stamp duty I guess.

      • Stamp duty being around 2k-3k it's still a decent saving i guess.

  • Merged from Buy Tesla from NSW or QLD Even if The Business Is Registered in VIC to Get The Rebate?

    Hi Folks,

I am looking to buy a Tesla model Y under my business name and I wonder if anyone knows about the possibility of buying it from NSW or QLD to get the local government rebate.

The business is registered in Victoria but Victoria no longer offers any rebate.

If it was a dealer, i could have called them and check but haven't found a way to call Tesla in the 2 x states to verify this

If someone can confirm, that would be fantastic

this same question has been asked multiple times

Thanks. I tried searching for Tesla Model Y but had no luck. Should have removed the Y and might have had better luck

    • Won't be eligible, not a resident of those states.

  • My plan is as below (I live in Melbourne):
    1. Order a Tesla Model Y under my freind's name who lives in NSW with driving license there.
    2. Fly to Sydney to pick up the car and transfer the car to my name.
    3. Drive it back to Melbourne.
    4. Go to Vic road to change the registration to Victoria
    5. Claim $3000 EV rebate from NSW government

Current drive away price of Model Y in VIC is $70665, and thats $64944 in NSW after $3000 rebate.
    Total saving: $5721

    Question here:
    1. Can I transfer the cart o be under my name when picking it up in Tesla Sydney?
    2. Will it occur any charge in Vic like stamp duty….
    3. Do you think the plan is workable?

    All opinions are welcome.
    Thanks

    • You'll need to pay stamp duty and get a roadworthy to transfer it to you in Victoria, and only your friend can claim the rebate.

By the time you get the car and pay stamp duty, fees and roadworthy, your $3000 rebate is down the pan (it's roughly $2600 stamp duty, $45 fees and $200 for the RW give or take). Then the drive back, assuming you charge, say, twice on the way home at a superfast is gonna be about $100+ (I'm not up with the ranges on the Tesla, but the Tesla chargers are no cheap. Might be cheaper if you go for Eevie or similar instead). Then only your friend can claim the rebate- or it'll come out of the purchase price. That doesn't include plate assignment fees ($135 when I got mine done) + more if you go custom plate.

      Just buy it in Vic.
