Interestingly, semi synthetic and full synthetic are often the same type of oil.

Unless you know that a "full synthetic" is entirely PAO, Ester, or AN, then its very very likely a group III / IV mix.

Just since mobil won their case against the API to call Group III 'synthetic', the more marketing heavy companies dropped the "semi" and just hope people dont ask why its so cheap suddenly.

    • So uhh what does this mean in terms of changing oil intervals… lol

Recommend any good articles regarding the difference in grades of oil? seems interesting not sure where to exactly start.

    • Can be made entirely on group III to be considered full synthetic. Semi needs only 30% group III rest can be group II. It's been several years since group III has been considered "synthetic".

      • Thank you for the reminder of the percentages, it's been a while :)

    • Thanks, do you have a link. Can’t seem to find it

Nulon Apex+ 5W-30 Full Synthetic 5L is on sale for $39 at Repco, not sure if this is the same as normal 5W-30 with the dexos1

Thanks for the heads up, this is the oil I use!

This'd be overkill for a mower but I did research a while back and learned that 10W-30 (or 5W-30) can be safely used in a mower that requires SAE30. Used Gulf Western 10W-30 at $10 for 5L with no issues.

Correct, the problem with multigrade oils is that they're formed using long chain molecules, which shear.
The reason single grade is preferred is because a 30Wt oil, will always be a 30Wt oil.

You can lessen the effect of multigrade breakdown by keeping the viscoscity of both ranges, as close to each other as possible; the least shearing Group II/III off the shelf rating would be a 15w40; If your mower can handle SAE40 (and most mowers are splash sumps, so honestly, give ZERO f's about whats in them), that would be my go-to.

This is the reason that 'German Castrol', being a 10w-60, tests as a 10w-40 within 1000kms of driving, there's just no affordbale way to keep an oil stable with such extreme levels of Chlorinated Parafins.

tldr: If you do use this in a mower, you should change it often. If you use a Single grade in the mower, you can follow the usual service intervals.

since mobil won their case against the API to call Group III 'synthetic'

A win for Mobil but a fail for shoppers differentiating between real synthetic and filtered mineral oil.

Yep, but luckily the price still shows it VERY clearly.
And Penrite even caught on and started actually labeling their oils 'PAO and Ester'.

  • I bought the equivalent in mobil for a 2015 cx5.
Far exceeds the specs in the manual - I change every 7500 km….

    • does CX5 specify full synth?

      • Doesn't matter; even if you used mineral in an engine designed for synthetic, all it would do is shear faster, shortening the drain intervals. It won't damage the engine just by being used.

ANY vehicle that doesn't run a wet clutch can absolutely use a Synthetic oil.

        • What are your thoughts on a 7500km drain interval on a part synthetic ?

      • Doesn't mention synthetic or part synthetic.
        It's just the oil specifications

  • There is no possibility for delivery its a pick up in store only item

  • Given Autobarn was selling Nulon full synthetic Apex+ 5w 30 just a few weeks ago for the same price, it strikes me as surprising they would attempt to sell this odd oil so soon. Not sure any manufacturer specifies this oil, so there should be plenty of stock if it takes anyones fancy…..

    • Agree. That was a cracking deal.

Repco have Apex+ 5w 30 for $39 at the moment. Not quite as good but still a reasonable price.
