Credit Card Rewards Comparison Site Feedback

Hey all,

I'm designing a web site to allow easy comparison of Credit Cards & Rewards Programs and was hoping to get some feedback from some OzBargainers.

The site is http://rewardscompared.com and you can compare cards here http://rewardscompared.com/cards

What do you think? Does it provide what you need when shopping around for the best credit card deal?

Feel free to leave feedback on the site via the Contact Us box down the bottom or send me a message

thanks :)

Looks great and well presented. We tried doing something similar on the wiki, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/credit_card_rewards_compari… but it's tricky if you can't adjust your variables.

Looking at the results though, it is missing some of the better rewards cards.

  • Thanks for your reply Neil - will have a hunt around for some of those other cards. If anyone knows of any I've missed let me know and I'll add them in. Thanks :)

  • How did you work out that 500 QFF points equate to $3.70?

  • 500 Qantas Frequent Flyer points http://rewardscompared.com/program/qantas-frequent-flyer/500… will contribute $3.45 towards a $100 gift voucher

    500 points x 29 = 14,500 points

    14500 points = $100 gift voucher https://store.qantas.com/Catalogue.a2?Page=ViewProduct&Produ…

    $100 / 29 = $3.45

    make sense?

    • Yep, makes sense. I was looking at Velocity Rewards which says $3.70 but it looks like 14,500 points = $100 as well so how is it $3.70? - https://shop.velocityrewards.com.au/award?categories=cars+di…

Anyway, a really great site…I particularly like the comparison link where you can put in your spend amount (with a percentage for Amex) and you can take a quick look down to see which will give the most rewards. It would be good if you could sort by the yearly return in dollars. :) In fact, sorting by all columns would be handy.

Thanks again…hope you can generate a bit of income from the site to keep it running.

In your opinion, what's the best rewards card?

    • Good question but I think it will depend on your spend, won't it?

Also, from your earlier question…what better reward cards is the site missing?

      • Seems to have most on http://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/credit_card_rewards_compari…. BP Citibank is not on there. The BMW/CPA/etc. cards with free $200 David Jones card is not there either.

I plugged in a figure, 5K, same as the one setup on the wiki.
By dollars, ANZ rewards is top at $361. (Rewards 0.75%, AMEX rewards 1%)
Whereas the Virgin High flyer tops the charts in rewards at 0.93%, dollars is $306.56
Westpac Altitude Platinum Plus tops Amex rewards 1.77%, but in dollars its $58.98

Looking at the AMEX platium it shows a -$900 loss. I guess it would be interesting to hear how these figures are attained for each. Maybe worth factoring in the priority pass costs as well as a free domestic flight.

One big issue with the site is after you plug in the number and hit calc, it freezes my browser (FF 15) running the javascript. It asked twice if I want to continue running the script.

        • BP Citibank card is no longer available.

        • Ah weird. That's my current card. I wonder if that means they will be changing my card to something else soon.

        • Well, lo and behold I got a letter today from Citibank saying they will discontinue the BP credit card and convert it to the Citibank Classic. They offered 1000 points to sweeten the deal but doesn't work out as good as the other cards mention. At least now, I'm motivated to to switch to one of the ones listed.

@RC The Citibank classic is not listed on your site.

        • Hi Neil - have just added the Citibank classic.
Not surprised 1000 points is not much of an incentive - only works out to be worth about $5.81!
          http://rewardscompared.com/program/citibank/1000-points

Looks like there are definitely some better offers out there.

    Missing Jetstar credit cards.
    http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/cards

Great site, takes guess work out of comparing, and putting $ and % next to each other makes comparing so much easier. I used to do this every time I apply for a new card, but now I don't need to create new spreadsheets!

  • Thanks Stix/Neil/Shinryoku - I'll add those cards to the site. If anyone has any others let me know - I've added a couple from other people's feedback.

Neil, the free $200 David Jones cards you mention are sign-up bonuses which are excluded from the calculations as they are a once off only (and for first time amex card holders). Perhaps I could add a signup comparison page - ie. http://www.hsbc.com.au/1/2/qffpoints?r=gg&WT.mc_id=AUH_pqccf… has 20,000 QFF points on signup which is worth around $137.93 http://rewardscompared.com/program/qantas-frequent-flyer/200…

The AMEX platnium will show a $900 loss if you keep the Amex spend percentage at 0 because you're spending 0% x $5000/month on the amex. If you plug in 100% on AMEX, you'll earn 60,000 points over 12 months which is worth around $444 (http://rewardscompared.com/program/american-express/60000-po…), minus the annual fee of $900 which comes out at -$455 loss

I'll check out that javascript error too - thanks for that.

    • OK, I see. I think it's quite important to include the promotional points/cashback whatever that you get in the first year within the equation. It would also be good to compute the value of a free flight etc.

      Thanks for fixing javascript issue.

Just had a look at Canstar's rewards cards comparison and that's a good place to look for any missing cards.

According to them, the card with the biggest rewards minus fees is the Altitude Plat Plus Rews-Amex. ANZ also ranks highly up there.

  • Hi Neil, that Firefox problem has been fixed - should be much quicker now. I've also fixed a logic problem related to Amex percentage spend for cards without an amex option - so I'd recommend trying again with your spending figures and see which card comes out on top - may be quite different.

hinryoku, I'm still to add the jetstar cards - will add them in the next day or two

Coles Mastercard is also not in the list

  • How about Bank of Queensland? They have a 'Q Rewards' program.

  • OK Coles, Jetstar, BOQ have all been added. Surprised by the value Jetstar provides - although you can only spend the rewards on Jetstar flights. Coles Mastercard looks the next best for a $5000 monthly spend.
    http://rewardscompared.com/cards

    • Jetstar are good value but unfortunately they automatically email you flight vouchers once you've reached a spend level. The voucher can only be used for 3 months for travel within 6 months and can't be transferred to anyone else (e.g. eBay). If you travel regularly on Jetstar it would be good but for the average person it's a bit tricky.

    • Gees, that Coles card looks pretty good. Anyone use it? Can you double up at Coles, Target, etc? So for every $1, you get 2 points on credit card and 1 point from flybuys?

  • OP, if u enter a value of 100k+ yearly spending, all Jebstar's cards will give u neg return.

    • Thanks - that's fixed now. http://www.rewardscompared.com/cards

The capping will come into play for Jetstar, - for a $100k yearly spend means a $441 return for the Mastercard (Jetstar dollars). Best bet looks the Platnium version if you qualify - although remember you can only spend that on Jetstar flights and as Neil mentioned above, voucher is automatically issued and must be used within 3 months for travel within 6.

      • Thanks OP, good site. would u be doing a Cash Back comparison in the future?

        • I'm planning a comparison on the sign-up or first year bonuses, but not on cash back at this stage. I haven't seen many (any?) cards where the cashback redemption options represent the best value. My thinking (and would welcome feedback on this) is if you can get a voucher for something you were going to buy anyway (such as groceries, etc) then that's generally the best option.

  • I ended up going for the Coles Mastercard and ditching the Woolworths Qantas card. We like Coles, Target & Kmart better than Woolies & Big W so at least we can triple up on flybuys points at those stores.

Transferring 2000 points to $10 (flybuys dollars) is a standard 0.5% reward changeover but getting 2 points for every $1 spent everywhere on the card is great…plus extra flybuys points from Coles, Target, etc is even better.

  • Just to add…most rewards cards give about 0.5% return on what you spend. I went for the Coles card as it will give a 1% return (plus a little bit more when getting extra flybuys points from Coles, Target, etc).

    • I would say it all depend on how much u spend per year. Some cards come with AMEX on the platinum offer 1.5% return. They usually have higher fee, but if you spend like 40k a year and 60% or so on AMEX you actually will be ahead eg. ANZ platinum Rewards. And if your income is 120k+, spend lots and lots, Citibank Select VISA (not on the list yet OP) returning more than 1%.

      • True…I was actually deciding between ANZ Rewards and Coles MC with about $60k spend per year but even with 50% spend on Amex, it came out about even with the Coles MC. And with the additional flybuys points and not having to ask "do you take Amex without a surcharge?" all the time, I went with the Coles MC.

Out of interest, what card do you normally use?

  • I also got the BP-Citibank letter about closing down the program and moving to Citibank Reward Credit Card.

Although 1000 points "works out to be worth about $5.81", it's actually a lot less. I have no use of those gift cards (don't shop in those expensive stores). If you go for the straight cashback it's around $2.5 for 1000 points (=0.25%) which is awfully low.

Any other credit card reward program that gives you simply cashback like the old BP-Citibank one?

    • scotty - you can redeem the citibank points for BP vouchers - if you drive a car these are pretty close to cash as it's money you'd be spending anyway?

      • Then it's limiting me to pump up the car at BP station only. Well, I do indeed use BP pretty much exclusively these days as BP-Citibank gives 5% cashback there (and no need to shop at Coles/Woolies to get the coupons). Even BP vouchers won't be as good as 5%.

        • scotty/neil - let us know which card you guys go for

  • Some suggestions
Westpac altitude platinum amex spend is incorrect. For plat it is 3x Visa not 2x.

It would be handy if you could adjust the annual fee beyond the default. For many people (eg home loan customers, staff) the annual fee for cards is waived.

  • +1

    Good site, thanks OP

  • I quite like this idea and I've been looking for one which focuses on the reward programs "true rate" (like what you've done).

I find that the card comparison section is a bit cluttered though. All the information on the one page doesn't look neat and there's too much text together. I did manage to pretty much understand what is included in the table but it took quite a bit of effort to understand what each column meant.

I also fear that my understanding of credit cards is possibly not advanced enough to understand certain aspects. For example, "Cards with Amex option"? I thought the card types were either just VISA, Mastercard and AMEX. The way I am interpreting this means that a card can possibly be both Mastercard and AMEX?

One tip I may have for the cards comparison page, is at least a sorting option. E.g. Sort by "Spend to earn $100", sort by "Amex spend to earn $100", sort by "annual fee".

I also noticed the Qantas American Express Discovery card - it says it uses American Express reward program. If I'm not mistaken, it's actually Qantas Frequent Flyer.

Just a question BTW. Would it be wrong to say that it's beneficial to be part of a rewards program such as Qantas FF instead of say, Commonwealth Awards? I say this because Qantas FF can be accumulated in more ways (flying, Woolies, dining) in addition to just paying for flights, groceries with the card itself, as opposed to Commonwealth Awards which you would ONLY accumulate points for by paying for things with the credit card?

    • Each physical card is either VISA, MC, or AMEX (or others). See Westpac Altitude Plus. It's 2 cards, a VISA or MC and an AMEX linked to one account. So basically use the AMEX for all transactions unless a place doesn't take it or charges a surcharge, then use the MC or VISA.

While it's not obvious, the columns are sortable if you click the headings.

Regarding the QANTAS vs. Commonwealth awards, it comes down to what you plan to spend the reward on. If it's just the gift cards (low redemption level) then it probably doesn't matter if you have your groceries earning you FF and your credit card something else. Now if you want to save for a big ticket item such as flight upgrades (never buy tickets outright, bad value), then having all your loyalty programs in the same bucket might be helpful.

For me personally as a bargain hunter, I have very little loyalty. I fly the cheapest airline, shop at the cheapest stores, buy groceries at whoever is cheapest (using 5% gift cards). You need to sit down and work out where you spend your money and where you want to redeem it.

    • Thanks for your feedback illumination. I've done a brief update overnight so it now sorts by default here http://rewardscompared.com/cards . There's a few other changes based on yours and other feedback too. Look for more changes over the coming days/weeks too.

  • [Separate post because separate topic]

Hey, hoping you could help me out with this (should I make a new topic of is posting it here ok? If not just delete this!)
I'm looking for a credit card for my brother. Optimally I'm looking for the following:
    - No annual fee (or very low)
    - No supplementary card fee
    - Rewards program (preferably QFF)
    - Some kind of insurance on purchases (similar to Shopper's Protection)
    - Preferably Visa or Mastercard (seeing as AMEX is either not accepted or surcharged at many places)

I know this is a big ask, and the best I can find at the moment is the Qantas American Express Discovery. The only thing it doesn't fulfill is being Visa/Mastercard. It does however have a 7500 bonus QFF points for new applicants (by end of this month). I know there was also that BMW Amex deal a few weeks back which was also a very good fit.

He was previously using the ANZ Frequent Flyer card with an annual fee of $95 but I convinced him it wasn't worth it considering his monthly spend (about $500-1000). I think he's better off using a $0 annual fee card with NO rewards than ANZ Frequent Flyer for $95.

Just seeing if anyone can recommend something better than the Qantas Discovery AMEX. The main balancing factors I'm looking at are the annual fee, rewards program and supplementary card with the insurance being a bonus.

    • For low spenders, check out what Canstar's website recommends.

    • There's not many reward cards with a low annual fee.

The best he's going to do is with the Coles MC - it has a $49 annual fee but if he's spending $500/month, the annual return (after paying annual fee) is only $6 and for $1000/month, the return is only $60.

The Jetstar cards would be similar but the rewards are only for Jetstar flights.

With that low monthly spending, I'd tell him to not use a rewards card at all and just get a VISA debit card.

    • He was previously using the ANZ Frequent Flyer card with an annual fee of $95 but I convinced him it wasn't worth it considering his monthly spend (about $500-1000). I think he's better off using a $0 annual fee card with NO rewards than ANZ Frequent Flyer for $95.

Agreed - I suggest considering a BankWest Zero Platinum (or Gold) Mastercard:

There are currently quite a few credit card sites out there at the moment that do this well. We are currently promoting a credit card comparison site that has quite a broad range of cards. I was quite amazed at the amount of feeback supplied here. I wanted to know if you guys had feeback for us as well as we are thinking about a redesign and wanted to see what features you would want.

    • Your site is a bit out-dated. For example the BP-Citibank MasterCard is still there. Yours is also an information site listing out all the credit card offers + probably affiliate links to apply them — lots of text, nice design, but offers no help to me in choosing which card to get. There is no "comparison" features like RewardCompared, where you can put in the average spent each month to get a figure on how much reward you can get after the fees.

      • +1

Agreed. Rewards Compared is definitely a better site as it nice and lean and has a comparison table that can be tailored to an individual's monthly spend.

  • amex centurion card anyone?

    • As I understand, the Amex Centurion is pretty exclusive - available by invitation only - with a $5k annual fee too. I can't find any information on it anywhere - Amex don't seem to publish any info on their Australian site.

  • Why does the Virgin Flyer card only show 18,000 points for any yearly spend $18k and over?

    • Hi Stix - because of a small bug now fixed :) The Virgin Flyer card has a capping level at $1500 per month - site should now cater for that (earning rate halves from that point onwards). Thanks for the pickup.

      • No worries…thanks for the quick fix! :)

  • Your website rewardscompared.com. is easy enough to use and seems to have some good information about credit cards. We also promote our own <a href="http://www.creditworld.com.au/credit-cards/top-10">credit card offers</a> and it has a diverse range of credit cards and reviews for each card. Have a look at the site when you have some time

    • +4

Your site Credit World, also owns creditcardoffers which your colleague commented in before. Your site doesn't say why they are the top 10 cards. Your whole operation seems like an SEO exercise to make money off of credit card signups rather than helping consumers pick the right credit card.

      • Good pickup. Perhaps they're the same person?

  • -3

Hi neil. We only recently begun promoting our website. Our aim was to give consumers information about credit cards such that they can pick the card that is right for their given financial situation. Whilst we do frequently update our website with the most accurate information about credit cards & providers, we do not attempt to assume we know what card is best for each consumer. If you have any suggestions please feel free to pass them along to me. Also you are correct creditworld does own creditcardoffers but the posts were made by 2 seperate people.

  • @rewardscompared - any reason as to why the FlyBuys points are set to 0.93% instead of 1%?

    • @Stix

Previously (as recently as last month) a $100 gift card cost 10,800 points. Fly Buys have now adjusted that to 10,000 points - potentially to match the Coles Mastercard program for value?

Thanks for pointing that out - it's now updated and showing as 1%

      • Am I missing something? Doesn't it cost 20000 points for a $100 gift card?

        • Thanks Cooni - sorry that's a mistake above - it's a $50 gift card (not $100) for 10,000 points.
It basically comes out at 1% of your purchases with the Coles Mastercard; ie:
2 points for every $1 spent, so spend $5000 to get those 10,000 points (worth $50), so 1% return.
          http://rewardscompared.com/card/coles-mastercard

  • Is Coles Mastercard a Platinum card?

Or, is the below a different card? Annaul fee is $49.

    http://www.colesmastercard.com.au/platinumoffer

    • It's a different card, as it comes with the additional Platinum benefits of Insurance and Concierge Service. The earning rate is identical (2 points per $1 with 3 points at Coles)

This page http://www.colesmastercard.com.au/help-tools/about-coles-mas… (under Applying for a Coles Mastercard section) indicates you'll automatically be upgraded if you qualify.

      http://rewardscompared.com/card/coles-mastercard-platinum

      • Thanks.

If the rewards and earning rates are identitical, I suppose the Platinum card is better than their standard card.

        • +1

Yep. The only down side really is if you want a low credit limit - sometimes the Platinum cards have minimum credit limits which I think this one does.

  • +1

QFF points are worth a lot more for travel than for gift cards

  • Yeah people value their QFF points on AFF at between 3 to 6 cents a point. It all depends how you use your points!

    • Which flights are typically the best value?

  • i like the site, but when i click on how many points are worth how much in dollar value, it would be good to link to another page showing the basis of this calculation; ie based on a DJ gift card. Then if you want to select cash back for example you should have the option to adjust accordingly

    • Good idea lousy - I've added a link to the front page http://www.rewardscompared.com (you may need to CTRL+Refresh)

The link will take you to a program specific page which has a little more info on the calculation and what it's based off (which is generally gift cards). I might look at adding a cash back example too - although they are generally less value for money - personally I get better value from the gift cards as I'm going to be shopping there anyway.

  • +1

Man your site is awesome! Thank you for the service.

Was hoping someone could recommend a card to me based on the following:

    • any type of rewards
    • $2,000+ / month spend
    • Mainly spending thru Paypal (I assume that doesnt matter)
    • just looking for the best bang for buck credit card rewards program

Also, can I use my AMEX card thru Paypal?

Thanks so much for any help :)

  • +1

I actually sat down and tried to work out the best rewards card for me. Some of these offers are setup in quite a complicated way but here are my 3 criteria The first is a must, the other meh.

    • Best bang for buck
    • Free travel insurance. I usually spend $100+/yr on buying this for overseas trips.
    • An AMEX component so I can claim on all the AMEX deals posted here.

Well, the AMEX cards don't seem to rate well. So I decided the top 2 for 1 card and then apply for no annual fee AMEX solely to be used for the AMEX promotions posted here.

Rewardscompared ranked the top 4 credit cards as the ones from Jetstar and the Coles one. As mentioned before, the Jetstar voucher has it's limitations (3 months to use, trip needs to be within 6 months, can't sell on eBay). So that crossed Jetstar off the list.

Coles was good and they offer a merchandise guarantee so if you buy something on the card and it gets lost, stolen, or damaged, they will reimburse you.

    Important part:

Going further down the list I found ANZ Rewards was ranked 7th and gave complimentary travel insurance. I had a look and found the ANZ Rewards Platinum has a deal on for no annual fee for the first year and no annual fee for the second if you spend at least $20K a year. Rewardscompared ranked the Platinum as 12th. But once you remove the annual fee component, it moves it up to 5th position.

Additionally, it has 90 day purchase security (lost, stolen, broken) double the extended warranty on items purchased (probably already covered through consumer rights), and you get a version of the Entertainment book rewards card for discount at attractions/restaurants.

    http://anz.com/personal/credit-cards/platinum/anz-platinum/

This is the winner for me. What does everyone else think?

    • oh man! Thank you so much for sharing this. Gives me some great insights.

      • Totally messed up. I was looking at the ANZ Platinum and not the ANZ Rewards Platinum. The rewards has the annual fee whereas the regular platinum doesn't. No earning of rewards on the regular platinum. Sorry got too excited. Back to the drawing board.

      • Yeah. With the Rewards Platinum the reward fee is counted separately with expensive additional card fee + reward fee (I usually need to give the Mrs a card as she does most shopping). End up costing quite a lot with an additional card.

        • Yeah, it all becomes a bit complicated.

According to RC for ANZ Rewards Platinum, if I make 65% of charges on the AMEX, it ranks it as the 2nd best card. I think I should be able to do that. I assume retailers that don't charge CC surcharges for Visa/Mastercard won't charge a surcharge just for AMEX?

As for additional cardholder, that ends up costing another $65 which pushes the ranking down to 7th. Doh!

Meanwhile, the Coles card seems pretty straightforward. Maybe it's just easier going for that and then finding a no annual fee AMEX with travel insurance (I don't think that exists).

        • Although it probably varies a fair bit, it'd be interesting to know what percentage of spending Ozbargainers find they can use their Amex cards for (without paying a surcharge).

The percentage has a significant bearing on what card provides the most returns http://www.rewardscompared.com/cards

Neil, I think if you shop Coles already, the Coles card would be the best option, although the ANZ Rewards Platnium, if you can spend > 60% on Amex, it becomes a better option for $4k/month spending (http://rewardscompared.com/card/anz-rewards-platinum. Plus there's the advantage of the occasional Amex deals http://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/american+express

        • +1

Sorry to keep going on about this. Logic says go with Coles. The OzBargainer in me says go ANZ. I called up ANZ and see what they could offer me. (I was anonymous and am not an ANZ customer.) They offered 20,000 bonus points which is equivalent to a $100 gift card / cashback.

So for at least 1 year, this checks all the boxes for a good credit card.

        • :) Don't apologise Neil - I'm surprised more people don't take the time to work out which card is best for them - I've cashed thousands of dollars of vouchers over the years; it definitely is worth spending a bit of time to get the right card for your circumstances.

The ANZ card is a great option - consistently up the top of the table in terms of what they return to you.

        • haha dont be sorry! I am very keen to hear what you have to say about this.

          • So which one did you go for exactly? the ANZ Rewards Platinum?
          • Did you choose it over the Coles one soley because of the AMEX features?
          • Any advice as of what to say to ANZ if i want to get a simliar deal from them?

          Thanks a lot neil

        • Haven't decided yet. I think I'm going to go for the ANZ rewards. I'm wondering if going into a branch will get me a better deal plus easier to apply for as they'll need ID to set it up.

Any advice as of what to say to ANZ if i want to get a simliar deal from them?

I just spoke to someone on the phone. They explained everything about the card. I asked if there were any promotions. She put me on hold and told me about the 20,000 points deal. If you do a Google search, this deal used to be on their website but recently finished. They now have a low balance transfer deal up on their site which is useless to me. So no special tricks, just asked politely.

        • ah cool! thanks for the insight.

          Please let us know:
          + how you go instore
+ what you end up getting

          i am very interested.
          Cheers neil

        • +1

I went into ANZ today to see if I could get a deal. Woah. I can't say I go to banks often but I went to a newly open branch in Collingwood, VIC and was shocked. They've made the bank the equivalent of VicRoads/Immigration/Centrelink/. As soon as you enter the bank, a little kiosk asks you what you want to do and then spits out a ticket like the deli counter. You then wait in a waiting room for your number to be called. I suppose it's more efficient but it brought back memories of waiting in government offices.

They couldn't offer me anything. The person serving me opened up the website to show me all the details of the card and the deal that the website is offering. They couldn't offer me any deal as she would "get into trouble". Yeah, winning a new customer who banks elsewhere is bad. She tried to push me into opening a savings account there but I explained the ING 5% back deal and no fees. Hard to beat that.

Well no dice. So I will just call up again and apply on the phone. I believe I then have to go back to the branch and show my id. I did manage to get the T&C of the travel insurance which I will read through and compare to the usual travel insurance I get. Perhaps if I had accounts with them already, then I would be able to get a better deal. Who knows? Seems like calling them up is a better way to go.

Just a bit of an update:

Firstly, the Coles Mastercard emailed and sent me an offer in the mail of 5,000 points upon signup. Looks like a few people have been offered this deal. No official link though so maybe it's tied to certain Flybuys accounts. For those wanting to sign up with that card, it may be worth calling them up and say "my friend" got an offer of 5,000 points to sign up, can I have this offer?

In hindsight, I may have taken the Coles deal as I don't think the ANZ Plat Rewards is as great of a deal as I thought. Continuing the story, went into the branch, gave all the ID, and everything was all set (well the usual fiddling, banks closing at 4PM).

Here's my big gripe. I thought that AMEX was not accepted at some places. It turns out that AMEX is not accepted almost everywhere. Looking at my online banking, I've only been able to make 1 transaction out of 15 on the AMEX (Coles Express (I forgot to use ING)). Paypal won't accept AMEX and neither will Myki or Vic Roads and the cafes I've visited so far. I had the assumption that the majority of transactions would be with AMEX. I was able to switch one direct debit (gym) to AMEX but that's it. Well, the travel insurance plus 20k points sort of make it worth it but if I don't use the AMEX component then the rewards aren't that great.

My only other minor gripe is that AMEX cards don't do pins, chip and definitely not Paywave. Not a big deal especially as it's rarely getting used.

        • Interesting to hear that Neil.

I've heard estimates of 33-50% from people on where they can use their AMEX card. Supermarkets and some petrol stations seem to be the main options; utility bills generally don't allow it (without a surcharge) and you're right about cafes.

One other card to throw into the mix - the Bankwest More Platinum card is a good alternative if you make a lot of big overseas purchases - they waive the 2.95% foreign transaction fee

        • Are there other Cards that waive the FOREX fee?

This Bankwest Platinum Card looks awesome!!

I just rang up about it.

Bonus 16,000 points going at the moment and only $99 annual fee for the life of the card.

        • Thanks for the posts Neil, does anyone know of a no annual fee AMEX card with travel insurance?

  • David Jones American Express Qantas $0 annual fee i think is an error its $99 is it not?>. if it is $0 then provide us with the url? "Please check the box to confirm you have read and agree to the above declaration and acknowledge that the information provided will be used to assess your capacity to repay this product and this Card has a $99 annual membership fee" https://www252.americanexpress.com/inga3/au/dj/ia/begin.do?p…

some people may be lucky to get it waived every year by calling up or cancelling it and reactivating the account within 60 days

  • i know all that but im just pointing out that you need to update your website. you have the "David Jones American Express Qantas $0 Qantas Frequent Flyer $0 0 $1 0.75 $19,333 0.52%
    Qantas American Express Discovery $0 Qantas Frequent Flyer $0 0 $1 1 $14,500 0.69%"
they are two different products. yes the Discovery card is $0 but the David Jones American Express with the Qantas Frequent Flyer option is $99 not $0

correct me if im wrong by providing me with a url to apply for the David Jones American Express with the Qantas Frequent Flyer option that states its $0 annual fee

    • Sorry coolsteps - I'm not following (maybe it's the heat :) )

Our web site does list the annual fee at $99 fee for the David Jones Amex card http://rewardscompared.com/cards
with the David Jones Qantas card having an annual fee of $0

  • thats right your site lists the David Jones Qantas card having an annual fee of $0 which is incorrect it should be $99 call them up if you don't believe me or read the application form fine print.

  • currently using nab flybuys card with monthly spend of $40,000. Looks like i can double my points using coles platinum mastercard. But I do see in conditions that it excludes business spending which is the majority of my spending.

    How strictly is that enforced?

  • I think you should also compare the extras you get with each different card. I have a commonwealth Bank Diamond Awards and when Strategic went broke I had $7500 worth of tickets refunded with no excess. I have had a travel claim of car hire excess paid. and a ebay purchase refunded . so even though according to the site I lose money on this card I am keeping it. By the way I got knocked back by 28 degrees for a $1000 card because I dont have enough income
