Gold Coast on Bus or Hire Car

Hi Guys,

We are going in Nov for 5 days 4 nights and would be spending 3 day at theme parks.

We are 4 adults and 2 kids.

I have heard the bus pass per week is $119 per head. Is this right? seems a bit expensive.
Would it be cheaper to hire a 7 seater car than buying Bus tickets.

What else can we do for the remaining 2 days?

Any advice is appreciated.

  • Remember this price will cover your airport transports each way and on the buses locally. Or you can just travel on the local bus and pay as you go. The local bus goes from Airport in Coolangatta to theme parks and to Harbour Town- outlet shopping. It really depends on where you are staying and how far you are going and how often. We have timeshare in Coolangatta and never hire a car. Just use the buses. They are a bit more expensive than Vic, but cheaper if you buy a 'Go Card' as travel is then 30% cheaper than paper tickets. If you were staying at Coolangatta, then bus pass would be cheap, but in Surfers, then you might only use it for to & from airport & theme parks. Look up on Translink and try to calculate your ticket prices and then you'll see the cost and savings. I'd also just enjoy the beaches after three days at Theme Parks. Remember the first and last day are lost due to travelling. Have a nice holiday!

  • in my experience, the last thing you wanna do after a long day at theme parks, is sit on a bus with a bunch of other smelly kids that also had a long day at the theme park. now times that by 3.

if you're going to hire a car, use the entertainment book if you have one. you can get 5% off the daily rate + they might have a "get 5 days, pay 4" voucher that you can use in conjunction.

relax on the beach for the last two days. or do some fishing. go down to tweed heads and catch a mud crab…nom nom nom

    • I would have to agree with the private car option. While buses can sometimes be convenient, there is still the matter of over-crowing (especially from theme parks), waiting for them to arrive as per the time table and delays they might from unforeseen circumstances, plus they are not near as cost effective as Victoria. I know I used to live there!
Whatever you decide to do, I hope you enjoy your holidays and all our area has to offer. Have you tried looking at www.goldcoasthiredcars.com.au? They propose pre-determined fares to all holiday makers, so it might just be a better alternative. Give them an email and see what you can find out.

      Happy holidays!

  • Cheers Guys, I will look into it.

Well hire cars cost $100+ per day just to hire then it requires petrol and the hassle of driving in that traffic, just to park it in the car park for the day. We've been holidaying up on the Gold Coast on Coolangatta (furthest away from the theme parks) for 8 years now with three children (now young adults) and have never bothered to hire a car. My husband really appreciates the break from driving and gets to enjoy the scenery too whilst on the buses. Buses have been great, so much so that we have bought 'Go Cards' for everyone and save 30% on paper ticket prices. Check out http://www.surfside.com.au/documents/gagweb16DPS.PDF. Great ideas of things to do and handy to print out the two pages on the bus network. But of course all up to you. Be careful of the damages being to charged to hire car customers as well. Apparently it's advisable to make sure all previous damage is recorded and photograph it for yourself. Enjoy your holiday, I'm envious! Have to wait until early Dec. when I'm back.

    • Dont know about $100+ per day, I just returned from the Gold Coast and had a hire car with Budget.
7 Days, 6 Nights Ford XR6 for just over $230. Used the entertainment book which saved about $35 so about $270 normally anyway…

      • exactly. $100 not believable

  • Well I searched http://www.rentalcars.com and a Ford Falcon for three days is $206, plus extras like petrol. I'm not sure if that covers things like stamp duty and insurance. But hey just pointing out that the car is just sitting in the car park for that money- seems a bit of a waste to me.

  • +1

Catch the public buses. Costs almost nothing.. and they drop you right at each theme park (and to and from the airport).

  • Note that the RBC Europe booking website offers the option to hire cars in Austria but not Australia.
