Proton Pass Launch:

We’re happy to announce the global launch of Proton Pass, available now as a browser extension on most major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, and more) and iPhone/iPad and Android. Proton Pass is a password manager that also focuses on identity management. It provides security best practices, like using a passphrase instead of a password or using a unique password for every website, without worrying about forgetting your passwords. It also saves you time by letting you log in with one click when you return to a website. Proton Pass does all this for free, but also with Proton’s unparalleled attention to privacy and encryption.

In addition to password management, Proton Pass also protects your email. When you sign up for an online service, Proton Pass will suggest a secure password and store that in an end-to-end encrypted digital vault. But Proton Pass will also enable you to create a hide-my-email alias. An email alias is a randomly generated email address that sits between a third party and your real email account. This prevents the third party from identifying who you are and filters out trackers and other marketing tools before forwarding the messages to your main inbox.

Like all other Proton services, Proton Pass is designed differently because of our focus on privacy and encryption. For example, while some other password managers only encrypt the password field, Proton Pass uses end-to-end encryption on all fields (including the username, web address, and more). Proton Pass is open source so anyone can review and verify our security architecture. Proton Pass was also recently audited by Cure53.

Is this the same as Optus Pass

  • +24

    Can't get distracted from bitwarden!

    • Agreed

    • +4

indeed. DOA when the target demographic is already using the free bitwarden (or the free-er vaultwarden!)

      • -1

Proton Pass is similar to Bitwarden as it has a free tier

        also looks better imo

        • +1

          free as in beer, perhaps..

          • +1

@lachlantula: same features on their respective free tiers

            • +1

@OzGardian: ah, i meant free as in speech but I misunderstood cos proton pass is open source too!

  • +3

Price is euro rather than USD.

    • +2

I wasn't able to create a link for usd. The currency can be changed below the plan selection screen.

      • +1

ah okay. I already paid for the year in euros. Its okay, not that much of a difference.

  • +2

tried to buy, but already have it with Proton Unlimited. thanks for the post OP, had no idea this existed.

shame 1password billed me for a year just a few days ago :'(

    • +6

The Free tier for Proton Pass pretty decent too, maybe the real bargain here!

      • Free tier is just 7 day trial though?

        • +1

says Free forever in the plan list

          • @nubix: you are right. I downloaded the app, and it says its only 7 days in the app. on the website it says forever. Weird.

            • @blbk: I now realise its because in the app it gives you 7 days free of the pass plus.

    • Same here. I renewed LastPass a couple of months ago for a year and I could have just used the included ProtonPass….

  • i thought this is for steam deck

  • +1

I used LastPass through a previous employer and was able to invite myself for a personal/family account which still works a year on. I guess I'll have it as long as they keep renewing their license?

  • Would love to grab this if they had a Family Plan. We have to move off Lastpass soon.

    • +1

Proton has recently introduced a family plan for their whole suite. There's a little notification at the top of my page about it because it has a discount launch price.

      • 6 users
      • 3 TB
      • Mail
      • Drive
      • VPN
      • Pass
      • $19.99 USD/mo (for 24 month sub)

Also like many are saying, Bitwarden is good. I set up a free tier "organisation" (2 users max) for my parents so they can have their own accounts but share credentials where they need.

      • It’s a shame the 24 month plan needs an outright purchase however. It’s a large investment for a service people may determine mid way isn’t for them. Even if you are committed, it’s a lot to pay in one go.

  • +4

How's this compare to Bitwardn, aside from the obvious price difference?

    • +2

has a more modern UI, has end to end encryption (bitwarden might too, can't remember), run by the same people who offer Proton Mail, Proton Drive etc (private software suite alternative to Google)

    • +2

      Bitwarden open source too.

    • Didn't know it existed until this post. I've been using the Proton Mail as my daily for a year now. Proton Pass looks pretty good compared to Bitwarden (if you're already paying for Proton).

      Notably:

      • Integrated email aliasing
      • Integrated 2FA
      • +2

Bitwarden has 2FA included in the US$10 (per year) paid version. Email Alias Integration by default is included on all versions (incl free).

        • Oh yeah I was referring to the full featured email aliasing built into the ProtonPass application. The free tier ProtonMail aliasing is just a subaddress, and you need to pay to have access to SimpleLogin.

And yeah $10 a year for Bitwarden is probably a better deal if you don't already have Proton Unlimited or you're not looking to migrate to their suite.

          • @fatherofcats: Glad you noted it though as had never heard of "Integrated email aliasing" until now! Looks interesting so will try it out on Bitwarden which I use.

  • I’ve only started recently using LastPass having never used a password manager before, however I use Safari on my iPhone and can’t stand Chrome, yet on my MacBook I use Chrome and can’t stand Safari for whatever reason. Does Proton allow saving of passwords on Safari on iOS and Chrome on MacOS?

LastPass doesn’t seem to do this or I can’t figure out how and I’ve got a mash of passwords on both because I can’t save them all to one place on both devices

  • -2

Ahhh giving your passwords to companies software, what could go wrong

    • +6

Well it's open source and independently verified… so literally nothing.

      • -3

wasnt Lastpass, Lifelock, Keeper, 1password etc open source?

        • +4

Lastpass isn't, don't know the rest.

        • +7

Literally none of these you mention are open source lmao

    • +2

KeePass (and KP2A) does everything I need for password management and it is self-hosted. I use LastPass for work things as required for work and it is awful.

I imagine Proton Pass can only be slightly better but self-hosted always wins in my opinion.

      • +2

Self hosted doesn't win for 99% of people though.

        • You can use it with Google Drive or OneDrive or whatever cloud provider as well if you need to access it from wherever - main point is it is completely free

          • +1

@wizza13: Yeah but it is still more complicated. Bitwarden and Proton Pass free is also free anyway.

            • @Aureus: True, takes a bit of initial setup.

  • I can’t get the 80% because I’m MailPlus. They want me to go unlimited for $7 more 🤷‍♂️

    • There’s a post on reddit from them stating that support for multiple plans per an account is “coming soon”. Unsure when that will be. Might be worth contacting their support to see if they can do anything in the mean time.
