Been watching the prices of this for about 3 weeks now and Amazon has suddenly dropped the price on this over night, from a quick history search it seems this is the cheapest price documented here for at least 3 years.

Is micro 43 tech still relevant in 2023? Many say no - but I have a butt load of micro43 glass still laying around from my em5-ii days - and seems G9 still has a strong following and consistently still well received/rated.

For those on the fence, go on mate, it's good for the economy and you've had a good financial year. Plus, it's a write-off, Jerry!*

Love my G9 with the Sigma 30mm, highly recommend. Some of the grip is coming off mine sadly :/

    • Some of the grip is coming off mine sadly :/

Thats disappointing :( Did you try and re-glue it on?

      • +1

        It's on the to-do list

  • This is an excellent and very capable camera. The only issue I see is it’s getting a little old now and the M43 future is uncertain. Panasonic seem to be focussing on FF and ignoring m43. Also, this camera is quite large in size not the typical m43 compactness you expect.

    • +1

yeah olympus seems dead in the water and serious rumours of the g9 II have all but evaporated…

and yeah it is a chunky boy (but i also was probably going to get a 3rd party grip for it (if they exist))

      • +4

OM Systems bought the Olympus camera business and is already released good quality cameras and glass

    • +3

A Panasonic boss was quoted saying "we believe it is an indispensable system for achieving a compact body that can be easily carried" when asked about the future of M43, OM Systems are producing some quality kit, I reckon M43 still has a place and isn't going away any time soon.

      • Cool - that being said, i think as a whole, tech for stills has reached its upper limit as constrained by the sensor format itself - video tech seems to be catching up now too.

    • +2

"For the 15th year in a row, the future of M43 is uncertain…."

  • -2

4K recording limit appears to be 10 min at 50p or 60p, and 29:59 for 30p or less

Only worth $600 for the body imo

    • +2

      what's 600 based on?

      • That’s their budget

    • +1

The G9 is Panasonic's M43 alpha stills camera with video capability the full blown M43 model for video is the GH Series. There are no cameras currently on the market that compete with this for $600.00.

My biggest issue with this camera is the USB Micro B charging port. They really should've used type c…

    • i agree, but not an issue, i have micro usb cables ready to go at my charging station.
i bet in 10 years we'll STILL be struggling with this usb b and c issue

    • It came out in 2017

      • Most mid range and above things that came out in 2016 already had type c so coming out in 2017 really shouldn't have been a factor.

    • I just carry aftermarket batteries and charge overnight as required via charging docks. Never use charge port.

    • It's annoying but I just plug in the USB 3 cable that comes with the camera and charge the battery while its inside the body…clunky but it will be one less charge I carry/worry about.

  • +2

Lowest ever price via Amazon according to camel x 3

    • +1

i dont even bother check camel anymore, has been pretty weird lately especially if seller de-lists then re-lists later…

still good to know though, i still price check everything manually like some 1980's bargain hunter.

    Where's my spy camera OP?

    • +1

we've come up with a camera so tiny, it fits in this oversized novelty hat!

  • +1

Awesome cameras, use them all the time, the 4k@60p stabilized non-cropped video is still amazing quality, even compared to Sony A7Siii, Canon R6ii and Pana S5 ii !

    • +2

100% agree. The image quality on the G9 is quite underrated and IMO unfairly overlooked by many prospective buyers when it was released originally.

  • What's the cheapest readily available recent m43 these days? Seems like most of the bodies including this are pretty old now.

I've got a bunch of m43 glass that's too good to just dump, but probably isn't worth selling and my em5 mk1 which I barely use has some issue with the shutter that I'm not sure it's worth fixing anymore.

    • I wanted em5mkiii but price be crazy and I didn’t want to go 2nd hand

  • Recommended travel zoom/s under a grand for this?

    • +1

      Easy.
      Budget Panasonic. Budget Olympus.

But if you want faster and better quality optical, this Panasonic.

      Take 5% off.

    • Panasonic 14-140 F3.5-5 (28-240 35mm equivalent) has served me well for travel.
Olympus 14-150 F4-5.6, although have never used.

    • Olympus 12-45mm F4 pro. $700 camerastore ebay

  • +1

Oh man this is so tempting! I have a G85 and this would be a good upgrade…. I hate when money is tight lol.

    • It’s uhm… good for the economy ✨

Plus management said you had a good financial year, go on - mate, you deserve it.

    • +2

I have hammered my G9 on many adventures to harsh environments (salty, damp, dusty, torrential rain etc.) around the world and it's has captured the view beautifully and never let me down. How many cameras this capable at this price point have full magnesium alloy body with proper o-ring sealing? At $856.13 it's a no brainer even in 2023.

      • What’s your lens setup like?

        • +1

I started with the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4

  • +3

That's an amazing price for a wonderful camera. Best purchase I've made in forever

    • i am so hyped up for monday! prob will rock it with an oly 12mm f2 for a while like the old days.

  • +1

Dang, bought this for 998 a couple months ago. Hurts!!!

    • +3

You had a couple of months use for $140, think of it as cheap rental ;-)

  • +1

Purchased back in April for $998, and reckon even then it was a bargain. Great camera and fantastic video. For the price you can't go wrong

    • +1

I bought mine after Xmas 2021, Camera House Aust on eBay, $999 minus 10% discount code. Have not seen such price since, till now. It's a solid camera. It felt and looked more professional than it should be, the top LCD screen made it look more top end as well.

  • can this thing film without 30minute cap in 1080p? anyone know the filming caps? and is this as good as a7iii if i was mainly using it to record videos for youtube etc?

    • No it’s capped at 30 for 1080.. are you legit going to do a 30 min 1 take video with no stops though?

What style of YouTube video are you doin? And where do you feel the a7iii is lacking for video?

  • +1

I've had this for a year (bought mine second hand for $900 so figure that out; second hand market for cameras has been a bit stupid for a while now) and this will probably be my camera for the next few years until the market settles down in terms of feature set and lens availability.

M4/3 is a niche lens market (only Pana and OM Systems make the majority, especially if you want autofocus) so be prepared to go on the second hand market and/or go manual lens for this camera. I pair this camera with a Laowa 9mm, an Oly 12-40 f2.8 pro, a Pana 14-140, and an Oly 45mm prime and only the Laowa was purchased brand new; the others were from either Marketplace or eBay (the Oly 12-40 was a freaking steal when I bought it for $600 on Marketplace and its in pristine condition).

  • Lol back to 935 - hope some people managed to snap up a bargain, I did :)

I will buy this in a heartbeat if there is a software that does all the post automatically for me, any suggestion?

Every time a camera deal like this come up, I want to pull the trigger and only stopped when I think of the time I need to spend on post with the photos.

    • Skylum luminar - depends on what kind of post processing u mean though - I also use Adobe photoshop and lightroom

      • I am referring to the type of post done in smartphone for me automatically.

With luminar, can I load a bunch of photo and click a button, then it does what ever it does and chuck out a folder of nice and usable pics?

        • useable

I’d say you’d get fine useable pics in auto mode without post processing …

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: Yeah but if I do that (and assume shotting Jpeg) then I may as well use my phone. Save $900 bucks…. That is what stops me pulling the trigger everytime a camera deal come up. Too old for GAS I guess 🤣🤣

            • @syswong: If you don’t print or bother to look on a screen size bigger than your phone , yeah not worth

  • Seems pretty good, got mine delivered today.
Buttons for absolutely days. Pretty snappy overall.
