Where is the NBN device?

Hi,

I hope someone can help explain this… I inspected rental property in Mebourne West for a family member. The property is around 3 yrs. The NBN enclosure/cabinet in the garage looks empty https://imgur.io/a/JczAMu2. I’m not familiar with the different NBN equipment or setup. Should there be a NBN device? I asked the property manager and she does not know.

Last year NBN installed a device in my property when I upgraded to FTTP connection from FTTN. So I kind of expect the same or similar device.

That's an Opticomm sticker. Opticomm isn't NBN, it's its own thing. Different (usually more expensive and less reliable) plans.

Run the address through the NBN website and see what type of connection it has, otherwise Opticomm might be the only option.

    But yeah… looks pretty empty.

    • Thanks. I will call Opticomm (or a reseller/ISP) to enquire for a possible replacement.

      • In some areas you can get both Opticomm and NBN.
If you let your chosen provider know the address or enter it into their website they can tell you the underlying networks that are available to connect to.
Opticomm is ok depending on the area they have upgraded some areas to better quality high speed Fibre but NBNCo aren't the greatest when it comes to upgrading either a lot of regional areas have been promised high speed upgrades but delivered nothing unless you pay $500 a month for the Enterprise grade NBN and have the associated business details to order that.
A lot of areas on both Opticomm and NBN can't do any better then 100Mbps but you might get lucky with speeds.
But yeah as others have said looks like the previous tenant has taken the NTD with them, not realizing it won't work at another address as they are tied to a specific service.
This is why the providers need to make sure to point out to people to leave all NBN and Opticomm equipment at the property as its property of the network operator.
I know at CPK Web Services we list this in all our Critical information summaries for that reason.

Private fibre networks aren't in fundamentally inferior. And plans look reasonable in comparison to NBN FTTP/HFC: https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/internet/opticomm-plans/

Individual premises may suffer issues of course, until a local problem is addressed. But NBN is famously prone to this too.

Wherever I've been off NBN, be it fibre or 4 pair copper, life has been far better.

looks like a "standard" day in Melbourne?

  • Looks like the property you're renting has an embedded network: ie: the entire estate probably has it's own intranet that is managed by Opticomm, which means you're shit out of luck with selecting retailers as they own and manage the entire network. We had a similar setup at our rental in Cheltenham which had a network managed by Redtrain, along with an embedded power network. Ironically the power network was significantly cheaper than regular distribution, but you're at the mercy of whoever owns the network. You either put up and shut up or move out

Looks like the previous tenant 'decided' the NTD is theirs.

RE or the owner should be able to organise one for you though Opticomm

  • The main difference between OptiComm and the NBN is the provider. The NBN is a network built and maintained by the Australian government, meanwhile, OptiComm is an independently owned company.

    Heaps of service providers.. https://www.opticomm.com.au/service-providers/

Im on going to be on Telstra Opticomm soon as my house is built on the Telstra smart community
