How to Setup a TP-Link Tapo C110 Camera with Google Nest Wi-Fi?

Bought a TP-Link Tapo C110, and have been trying to set up with my Google Pixel 6 Pro through our Google Nest Wi-Fi.

The TP-Link Tapo app won't pick up my phone's Wi-Fi network because it's 5GHz - TP-Link Tapo only works on 2.4GHz.

I've tried walking as far away from the Nest Wi-Fi as possible, but still getting 5GHz on my phone.

Any ideas please? Ridiculous this is an issue in 2023.

TIA

  • Workaround - Use a laptop and start a 2.4ghz hotspot with same SSID and PW as the nest network.

    Turn off laptop.

    • Sorry, could you explain this a bit more in depth for those of us who doesn't understand? 😂🙈

    • Running W11, and it says hotspot is over 5gHz

      • Just from Google:

In Device Manager, right-click on the Intel card and select Properties
Then click on the Advanced tab.
You will see an option called Wireless mode. Set the mode from 802.11a/b/g to just 802.11b/g.
This will prevent the card from scanning or accessing the 5Ghz 802.11a band and just leave you with the 2.4Ghz b/g band to work with.

        • Cheers, running AMD though.

When I go to Processors in Device Manager, theres like 6x "AMD Ryzen 5 4500U with Radeon Graphics"

          • @Uncle Roger: It will be the wireless adapter under network adapters

            • @ozturtle: Yup, worked it out, but still doesnt work for me unfortunately.

I'm still not clear how setting up the same 2.4gHz network on my laptop is meant to help, as we're going overseas tonight, and I want to be able to view from anywhere.

              • @Uncle Roger: The idea is that once you connect the camera to your laptop with the network name and password set the same as your nest, that when you turn the laptop off it has a record of that network still which matches the nest. Bit of a hack but can work.

                • @ozturtle: Oh, I see!

                  1) So I setup identical laptop 2.4gHz network on laptop.
                  2) Turn off laptop.
                  3) Then connect both my phone and Tapo to the laptops identical network that should still be there, and try setup like that?

                  • @Uncle Roger: Correct.

With reference to your comment above "Running W11, and it says hotspot is over 5gHz", around where you created the mobile hotspot on the laptop, you should be able to EDIT the network info to choose the 2.4Ghz channel.

If you are still having issues with creating the hotspot from your laptop, would you happen to have access to any other (functional) mobile phones? (e.g. your partner or roommate or family member's mobile phone). If yes, and it is an:

                    • iPhone - you can create a Personal Hotspot and enable "Maximise Compatibility" to use the 2.4Ghz.
                    • Android - you can create a Wi-Fi/mobile Hotspot and select the 2.4Ghz

Alternatively, if you have access to an old WiFi router with capability of selecting only 2.4Ghz, you may want to boot that up and try configuring your Pixel and Tapo on that old WiFi router.

As suggested above, if you create the hotspot or old router's WiFi with same SSID and Password, then it should be easier for the Tapo to click over to your main WiFi after you have done the initial setup on the 2.4Ghz.

Side note - It is unfortunate that Google Nest WiFi currently does not have the ability to only select 2.4Ghz. Also, it is annoying that Tapo is so picky about needing a WiFi that only has 2.4Ghz. When I was setting up my Tapo cameras, I was having a similar issue. Fortunately, the WiFi routers that I've been using (e.g. Unifi, TP-Link, Asus) had the ability to create separate SSID for the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

  • I don't have that set up but usually I try
    1. Turning off you mobile network (5g 4g) on your pixel
    2. Using your phone hotspot with same name and use extended compatibility.
    3. Use another phone to set up

    • Thanks for this - care to explain a bit more exactly what needs to be done please?

        1. Turn off your mobile internet. Swipe down, internet, toggle the 4g 5g off. Then try connecting to your camera per instructions.

        If didn't work
        2. Toggle hotspot on ur phone settings, network and internet, hotspot and tethering, Adaptive Connectivity (this allows 2.4ghz to your phone, setup Ur hotspot exactly like you study m home wifi, connect your camera to your phone

        If didn't work
        3. Use another phone to connect to ur current pixel phone

        Good luck

  • Google Pixel will change to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi if you go far enough outside. How far did you go?

Install WiFiman by Ubiquiti from the Google Play Store and use the signal mapper.

    • Tried this app, and even if the connection was bad/very low, it still kept 5gHz on! So weird

      • Did you go a couple houses down the street?

        • Yup went round and round - get a brief 2.4ghz before it straight away loses connection. So frustrating n

  • Nest Wifi doesn't have a feature to force devices to setup on the 2.4 GHz band. Some smart home devices only use the 2.4 GHz band and will not be available for setup if your phone is on the 5 GHz band. You may be able to tell your Android phone, if you have one, to only connect on the 2.4 GHz band temporarily in your phone's Wi-Fi settings, then you may be able to setup the device. Refer to the manufacturer's support information to see if your phone has this feature.
