Win 10 Desktop USB MTP Issue

I have an old desktop PC (has USB 2.0 ports only) running Windows 10 (automatically updates) fine for a long time until recently the USB ports don't recognize all my phones and cameras. The issue happens to all USB ports, front and back, directly connect or through hub. I connected the affected phones and cameras to other computers, and all are working fine.

What are still working:

  • External USB WiFi modem

  • External USB hard disks

  • USB flash disks

  • Charging function to all my phones (Apple and Andriod) and cameras

What's not working:
Cannot access to the storage on all my phones and cameras. When plugged in, the phone USB menu shows charging only, no MTP or other options, the computer systray and device manager don't show the new device. Device manager has an error (attached) on USB devices but delete this error device won't help it.

There is an error message in the systray when first start Windows 10. In fact there are no USB devices attached except the external USB modem which is working fine.

  • There could be so many different problems causing this. I always start with running a sfc /scannow in the command prompt with run as administrator.

It's old. Use your time and energy more wisely by simply replacing the machine.

  • Its probably the cables. Some cables are charge only or the usb ports aren't providing enough power to provide data transfer. The external modem/disks usually have their own power supplies.

also check your power options, sometimes with windows updates the usb power mode is changed.

  • try: go to device manager and update anything usb controllers drivers there
