JB's 20% off banner
20% Off Board Games

JB Hifi have 20% off all Board games (Most/All? cards games as well). Some pretty good deal to be had as their starting prices are pretty decent (usually not RRP) already. If you have a perks voucher you can get some of the cheaper games for really cheap.

Edit: Just to add, as magpiejay has said some of JB's prices aren't great so if you're aren't an avid board gamer and are unsure of the pricing for the games, best to check the price at BoardGameOracle. They have detailed price history, a little like the camels for Amazon.

Sadly JB-Hi-Fi aren't great for board games, unless you want 200 licensed versions of bloody Monopoly you'll never actually play. (Who is still buying Monopoly?)

That said, they do have a handful of worthy games. They aren't usually competitively priced, so be sure to check the price of the title you are after against the prices at other retailers at: https://www.boardgameoracle.com/en-AU

    • Some are priced well, some are really expensive. Overall the more popular games that you can find at Kmart and BigW are decently priced. Together with a perks voucher you can get a really good price.

If you are after a great laugh, a YT channel did a communist version of monopoly.. ducking hilarious 🤣

They released Monopoly Parramatta. F**KING PARRAMATTA!? There aren't even enough iconic places to fill the box cover - there's 2 of the park and a bloody Stone's Real Estate LOL
a fkn real estate agent makes the most remarkable places in parra. christ almighty, who's buying this crap? get a better hobby dude.

      • I hope there are chance cards like "You got mugged" or "Police busted your drug den. Go directly to jail. Do no pass Go"!

    • +1

Wow. I remember having this when I was a kid, mum probably got it for like $20… Crazy it's this much now!

    • Price matched at Amazon at the moment -
      https://www.amazon.com.au/Avalon-Hill-Tabletop-Immersive-Col…

It's been $145ish from memory.. I tried to coerce my friend into buying it around $150 but couldn't convince him…

Did he not watch the video - the guys wizard level beard had me in a trance

        • +1

Yep, unfortunately not enough to convince him.. He's spent all his money on Warhammer I think haha

    • The best thing about HeroQuest is that video!

  • Want to get some board games. Does anyone have any recommendations for good ones?

Wingspan is supposed to be good

      • I've heard of that. Thanks!

      • +1

+1 wingspan, was great fun playing with family and the artwork is beautiful

      • +1

It's okay, more of a solitaire multiplayer game. Unless no player interaction is your thing.

    • +6

Azul original version is good, splendour also.

Wingspan is good but it will take a few rounds before you get it and start having fun.

If you like a little bit of RPG ish gameplay; Betrayal: the house on haunted hill is a classic

      • Cool. Will look at those, thank you

      • LOVE LOVE LOVE betrayal but it is soooooooo long especially if introducing it to a new group fml

        • Yeah great game, but I CBF playing it anymore, as I need to explain the game to newbies and then it takes too long lol. Note this is when people are drinking so their attention span sucks.

If you want useful answers on this, you'll need to be a bit more specific in what you're interested in. Do you want something you can play with just yourself and a partner? Or are you looking for a more complex/challenging experience that might take a few hours to play through? Perhaps you're more interested in party games where 6 people can sit down and play together without having to think too hard?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpRtC_apXGU

      • I get you.

I guess I'm looking for games that I can play when I have a few people over. Something we can pick up and play for a while. Party games, yeah.

I played Catan the other week and that seemed to tick the boxes.

        • Cool, in that case I'd look into Ticket to Ride, Wingspan, and maybe Terraforming Mars if you want something a little more involved.

          • @Pirateguybrush: If you enjoy Terraforming Mars, TF: Ares Expedition is worth a look too. I personally enjoy Ares more as it's less kibbly and quicker to play, while still scratching that engine building itch.

            • @RandomNinja: Ticket to ride: Europe is one of our favourites! More balanced, with stations to help and when you play 5 player the map gets hectic!! Good fun all around

        • Ticket to Ride is excellent. Easy to pick up and greet to replay.

Can't go past Gloomhaven Jaws of the Lion, I started on that as my first and it is great!

      • +1

Edit - Nevermind it is a standalone expansion!

        • +2

More than that. It's actually a cut down and steamlined version of gloomhaven with many changes that make it much better for newer players and simplify the excessively long setup time that's one of the primary issues with regular gloomhaven

          • +1

@Ezuku: I have the base game on PC and yea it's rough for a newbie like myself. Tried getting some friends into it and after getting destroyed on the very first mission they promptly said screw that! I'd like to get into it but haven't the time.

            • +1

@dreamstation: The first pc campaign mission is waaay too hard. If you play GM mode it's much easier

            • @dreamstation: I'm assuming you haven't played the boardgame version then? Because probably the single greatest part about the jotl over regular gh is that it uses a book with hexes on it to represent the missions. Far better than tiles and vastly simplifies the setup.

That said, i personally didn't really enjoy jotl. With only 4 characters, if you have 4 players there's no ability to try anything differently. I really didn't like the demolitionist and found it agonising and tedious to play.

              • +1

@Ezuku: Nope only the digital version. Apparently it's quite faithful though

Be careful - it gets addictive and before you know it, you'll have shelves full of board games!

      My recommendations:

      Classics:
      Ticket to Ride
      Carcassonne
      Wingspan
      Azul

      Cooperative games:
      Forgotten Desert
      Pandemic

Board games by Phil Walker-Harding (Aussie designer):
      Sushi Go Party
      Barenpark
      Imhotep

      Complex/involved board games:
      Gloomhaven
      Terraforming Mars
      Scythe
      Mansions of Madness

      Fun for kids:
      Fireball Island

      Unique:
      Tzolk'in
      Atlantis Rising
      Steam Up

      Codenames

Easy to explain, fun to play, anyone who can read can play it.

      Very repayable.

    • The crew is worth $17

      • is this easy for kids to pick up? i read through the instructions once but it's probably going to make more sense when we do a play through.

        • yup, there is basically 1 core mechanic. Keeping them silent might be the hardest part.

    • I recommend Quacks of Quedlinburg and basically every Stonemaier game (especially Viticulture). Wingspan is awesome of course, but the lack of player interaction might not be for everyone.

    • Another vote for:

      • Ticket to Ride
      • Carcassonne
      • Sushi Go
    • just tried out ramen fury on the weekend. was really fun and easy to play with the kids. it's cheaper if you find it at your local EB store.or maybe try price matching?

$167 for HeroQuest is the winner here. With the app to allow solo play it's a great offering

    • It's still a rip off for what you get in the box… it really should be around $100. Apparently the figurines are bad quality…

      • The quality improved since the Kickstarter, and even then it was largely exaggerated in my opinion. A lot of people didn't like the softer plastic, myself included, but after seeing the amount of broken snapped pieces of my original vs the much more durable new one … I wouldn't go back
Each to their own, doesn't feel like a rip off at all for me, but admittedly nostalgia is here

  • I liked JB Hi-Fi for their competitive specials on some great games, but they don't bring out any noteworthy new releases; their catalogue becomes saturated with less-impressive, mass-marketed games instead.

    • +1

ie stuff they know they can sell.

  • If they only had Trouble! The only board game I play. I know, I'm basic :p

  • +2

Lords of waterdeep is good for this price. Always been a hit when I’ve played it.

  • HEROQUEST!!
Just waiting for dread moon to arrive now :-p

  • On thursday, managed to buy DBZ Cleudo and DB Super Monopoly.
My daughters 3rd birthday is a dragon ball themed party so the adults can play Dragon ball related board games

  • The Mario chess board is cool, but at least make it obvious who's a knight, rook and bishop.
Compare this with the Simpsons Chess Board where everyone is dressed up including Maggie on a toy horse.

  • When does this sale end?

    • +1

      Sunday, 2nd July

      • Great, gonna combine with first responders day
