Was looking for some dust covers for unused sockets on my powerboards and found this for cheap on Amazon. 48 pack for $6 works out roughly .12c per cover.

Is dust getting into powerboard sockets actually a thing ?

    • I was going to say the same thing..

Perhaps in a workshop or something?

    • my house is really dusty, and the dust is on the powerboards so I'm sure it gets in. you can keep cleaning it of course, but I cbs.

      • You need good Dyson deal

Never had to use one for the past 35 years . If you vacuum regularly and keep a clean house it won’t be a problem

Are you saying you actually pull out your furniture to ensure you don't have any dust build-up in your house ?
Most people don't do this - an average home has plenty of inaccessible places with a thick layer of dust, check out the cable-nest behind and under an average TV cabinet for example.

But I don't think the powerboards in these places care 🤷🏼‍♂️ I suppose if you connect a plug to a dust filled socket there is a small chance of adding a bunch of extra resistance (ie heat)…

    • I would have thought it's more of a child safety thing

I think I may have tried to stick a spoon in when I was a kid

I was seriously considering getting these to put in empty wall outlets and empty slots on power boards but then I read a review on Bunnings regarding this exact same product in a different capacity package. It was a picture of a guy showing one of these broken explaining that one of the legs has snapped off in his outlet and that the only Safeway he found was to turn the power off to retrieve a bit of plastic. Like I'm guessing everybody I've never had an issue with dust in outlets or power boards though I would probably guarantee these would be beneficial in a workshop setting but they do already have dust protected outlets for those environments. I'm going to pass on this product for the simple fact I don't have an issue that requires these and I feel like there's a good potential to create an issue that one day I need to pull one of these out and it snaps inside the socket. There's always different factors at play but I don't think they're worth the potential hassle

Pretty sure that anyone in a dusty workshop would just use some masking tape….

    • 100% you would be losing these things but the mighty roll of duct tape never fails

? Maybe useful for houses with little kids

Isn't the primary purpose of these things so little kids don't go sticking metal knives and forks into sockets while live?

    • yes, it's by dreambaby. but by no means it's only use

No, it's to prevent them from poking things in while dead.
