  • How does this compare to the Breville Barista Express?

    • +1

The most obvious difference is that BDB doesn't come with a grinder. So unless you already have a grinder, you have to factor in the additional cost, and time if you want to wait for a grinder deal. Breville Smart Grinder Pro is a popular choice, or you can step up to Eureka Mignon series to save the cost and hassle from later upgrades.

Then the heating elements are different, BBE use ThermoCoil to heat up water on demand, while it is not as quick as ThermoJet used in BBP or BBT, it is still much quicker than boilers. On the other hand, boiler is more consistent in delivering hot water and steam, as you can imagine having reserved hot water ready to go. Having two boilers allows one at brewing temperature, the other at steaming temperature, so you can brew and steam at the same time, and not having to wait for water to heat up or cool down, unlike single boiler machines.

BDB also has a heated tray on top, nice to have warm cups. BBE heats water on demand, so it doesn't warm cups.

Other differences are 54mm group head vs 58mm group head. In theory larger is better, more uniformed pressure, and less chance of channelling. Then there's the accessory considerations, funnel, basket, portafilter, shower screen, puck screen, distributor, tamper, etc.

      • Thanks. The BBE does warm cups though

        • Made the wrong assumption, thanks for correcting.

I guess it's to do with the placement of the ThermoCoil, which doubles up as a heating element for the cup warmer.

Both BBP and BBT don't have that feature, probably because ThermoJet is not suitable to warm up other things.

Anyway, perhaps it's better to heat up a cup by pulling a blank shot that heats up everything, than having the machine on all day just to keep the cups warm.

    • Can't go wrong with either. I have been told that smart grinder is better. Some times I just prefer Grindr instead of all this other nonsense.

Dual boiler means you can steam and pull shot at the same time.

      • Grindr is meant to be good for the BBC. Not sure about BBP and BBT but YMMV.

    • BBE is basically the same as The Infuser, with an added grinder.

I had an infuser and upgraded to BDB. BDB makes far better coffee and is noticeably better quality. Everything is just better

      • I have the infuser bes840 is it much of a difference since i'd be going from a 54mm porta to a 58 ?

  • It's back in stock now :)

  • 3 units left. looks like it will be out in less than 30 mins

  • Managed to grab one this morn for $899. May again be sold out
