I guess, the potential issue is that you can't pay via PayPal which would give you some protection.

  • +5

Bad timing, a lot of sales/coupons just ended.

Also no PayPal protection I presume, and I believe the Westpac currency conversion fee is 3%?

    • You can pay in AUD - yeah not ideal vs US, but no 3%×mark up

I have no idea in this case, but in the past I've been charged fees on other credit cards because the processing entity was outside Australia, even if the transaction was in AUD.

        E.g.: https://www.accc.gov.au/media-release/consumers-urged-to-loo…

Even websites with a .com.au domain name or that appear to be Australian based may process transactions overseas, meaning consumers can get charged an international transaction fee even for a purchase made in Australian dollars.

Like ebay, when I complaint with Ebay, they said I should confirm with seller first (by the time you get the responding from seller the special has ended) , even in desc said location Sydney

I booked a car from Bookin.com recently and got charged this 3% fee. I complained to NAB Dispute team and waiting for a response. When I book hotels form booking.com I never got charged this fee.

Are AE's conversions actually fair? Or do they just hide fees/profits behind slightly bad rates?

        • +1

          Latter

I was curious so tested one item, came out to about +2.5%.

    • So you have to pay conversion rate on Westpac card, and not Paypal?

      • Yep, generally you would pay with PayPal for the buyer protection and use a fee-free card for the best rate.

Mind you, the Westpac card's currency conversion fee is way less than PayPal's.

  • paying with Westpac using their conversion rate is not ideal + no PayPal protection!

maybe bring back the eBay is a better deal!
or purchase of Gift Cards using Westpac!

  • Not seeing this in app 😒

    • Same

    • The full list for Westpac Wednesday is here

Agreed, the SB app is bugged for the Westpac Lounge

    No PayPal?
No option to avoid FX fees?
    No dice.

AliExpress is the worst merchant online when you get into complaint or claim/dispute the faulty item. Not recommended

I have found the opposite has been true for me. I have won all my disputes. Fingers crossed I keep up my good luck!

    • I’ve only been through it once before and it was painful. I just received a DOA portable monitor yesterday and not looking forward to going through this again..

      • What monitor is it? I was thinking about getting one of those Bimawen monitors.

        • +1

          Yep, the Bimawen..

Very unimpressed. I was always hesitant to take a chance on these AE monitors, too much potential for things to go wrong. But I thought for ~$105 delivered i'd give it a go.

It powers on when plugged into my MBA M1, but no picture displayed. I suspect it has been dropped during shipping as box had some slight damage, and it arrived in the product box wrapped in plastic - no additional box/protection.

    • Got paid out pretty easily and well. Even got full price back for those 3 items for X amount.

    • Agreed, they used to be much better but now I've heard multiple people having issues with refunds/faulty items.

I've made over 1200 orders with aliexpress and had my fair share of dodgy sellers. Aliexpress disputes go in my favor 98% of the time. You just need to follow the rules of the dispute. Paypal is the same, I returned products (not what I ordered) to a seller with paypal and paypal refused to payout once. SO went to my Westpac branch an disputed the transaction there with all the eveidence and Westpac covered me where paypal would not!

  • Rip my orders literally just got shipped from a Saturday order sigh.

    • I usually do a $200 order a day or so before a deal comes along. Mind you I order a heck of a lot.

Damn it, no cashback for "Fraudulent activities"!

  • +1

    Does anyone know:

Is it better to pay in USD and be subject to Westpac’s foreign exchange fees or in AUD and subject to Aliexpress’ foreign exchange fee?

Do Westpac take an additional fee if paying in AUD for an overseas seller?

I just did a big order but will probably get more.

  • Sorry if this is a dumb question, can you use store coupons or does it invalidate cashback?

    • +1

      Usually works for me.

  • does the cashback work with multiple transactions?
