what do you think?
is upgrading to Alienware Cryo-tech ($133) cooler worth it?
ok, so people mentioned 5% discount code doesn't work with cashback, updated.

Check out some reviews online about these before buying, e.g. Lynas Tech Tips on YouTube. Unless they're better than they used to be, according to reviews they get so hot they throttle.

Having owned R12 (which got exchanged) and R13. I am finding R13 to be a lot more reliable and bigger.

R15 will be even bigger than R13. I know the fan size is bigger (120mm vs 240mm) and if it is sold at under $3k (I bought R12 during COVID at $3.4k) taking into account their support and warranty, I'd say it's a good price for Aurora.

As for thermal management, R12 was crap. R13 seems better and when I played COD-MW1 2019, it wasn't too noisy and the thermal managed reasonably well. R15 will be better than this. I have long considered Thermal management from Aurora won't be as perfect as many other PCs being used by many of the OZb members BUT their warranty and support were great (as I said, my R12 was exchanged to R13).

      • 240mm is a big fan

Gamers nexus did a really good review on one of these alienware pc’s in his review (probably last gen).

Not sure if this one has the same issues but from memory main takeaways were really bad ventilation in case causes overheating/throttling and proprietary mobo made it a horrible buy.

      • +1

        I have the previous gen R15 w/ 3090. Runs like a dream!
Added aftermarket RAM and SSD to mobo, never had any issues.

        • +1

Did you run any benchmark tests such as CPU and GPU stress test. That will really show if there is poor air flow in the computer and if there's thermal throttling.

Just saying that it ran like a dream if you hadn't run those tests means nothing really.

Linus is a rookie. Here is a video of them endorsing the alienware.

Gamers nexus review is more trusted, isn't paid content.

    • +3

If the title does not have the word review in it, Linus is probably paid by the company to make the video.

Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed have better consumer oriented reviews IMHO

    • Also check out Dawid Does Tech Stuff on YouTube for his reviews of the Alienware Aurora systems. Long story short, they look nice but have non-standard component sizing, non-standard power supplies and/or connectors, can't use a standard motherboard, heating issues, clearance issues, noise issues. Big waste of money.

they really need to update this design.

    • +1

aww, I find the 'Portal sentry turret' look adorable ;)

      • +2

        Is anyone there?

  • I think you negate cash rewards when you use a promo code mate …

  • Cashback is ineligible on the following:
    - Use of any codes not listed on Cashrewards.
    - Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat).

  • +2

$1700 at least for the GPU,
Rams pretty cheap, so $200, (1900)
Wonder what sort of mother board it uses? Probably at least $300 (2200)
    SSD $100 (2300)
    $560 for the cpu (2860)
Thats $2860, so you get the psu and case for $200 which seems pretty good. Plus it's alienware, the case looks pretty nice and has probably been put together well.
    I say a good deal…. pretty tempting……

    • +2

Don't forget the warranty and support. I have good experience with their support.

    • +10

It is not. Dell has their own cheap version of gpu, not worth any retail version. So $1500 max.

The 16gb 4800 ram only cost 100. Tons of 32gb 6000 ram only cost $200 now,

16gb ram and 512 ssd is absolutely joke in this system. Plus the thermal issue of the case.

      • RAM and SSD is a let-down, so consider self-upgrading a 2TB NVME and 32GiBbles of RAM on delivery… Approx $300, the Dell upgrade will cost 1k!

        • +1

Exactly! An average DIYer can do a much better job than this Alienware, maybe Dell only hired an artist to design the case, then leave the rest to a 10year old kid…

          • @simonlee1: DIY will always be cheaper, but most people don't want to build PCs cause it can be intimidating. This is only for those who just want off the shelf gaming PC with warranty and support if anything does go wrong, plus Dell is pretty good with returns if you have buyers remorse later.

            • +3

@thesmartone1125: wouldn't someone in that position be far better off grabbing something from Techfast or BPC?

            • +2

@thesmartone1125: The purpose of diy is not cheaper, actually it is not cheaper at all.

The purpose of diy is to get a balanced system or the exact system you want, and control thermal, power usage etc. which this Alienware does not have at all.

If you don’t know how to diy, just want to get a gaming pc, then search ozbargain, 3 k can get you a much better system than this., with warranty.

The motherboard has shit VRM and may not be enough for turbo clock of 13700F:

      https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware-Desktops/Aurora-R13…

Also the expandibility is heavy crippled for a Z690 chipset. If I have $300 to spend on motherboard, I would rather get a MSI Z790A:

      https://www.umart.com.au/product/msi-pro-z790-a-wifi-ddr4-lg…

    • +2

as Alienware user can confirm the mb nowhere near 300 more like basic $150

I would however give 250 value to the Dell wanrentee

    • +1

Here's a mockup of the system on pcpartpicker (without mobo or case) looking at 2.9K.
      https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/8GyqKp

So 3.1K is not a terrible price for the system. But the Alienware proprietary PSU is likely non-modular as well and the included AIO is probably not as high quality as a NZXT kraken.

  • +12

"I have no idea if it's a good deal."

So its not a good deal? You didn't research it before - expecting others to do it?

This belongs on forums at best - considering the recent Techfast and BPC deals.

      • +4

To be fair they do make a good point.

I can't recommend these sorts of systems as they use proprietary components which means good luck upgrading it when cpu socket changes (which it will when the next intel processor releases) as these things have front ports integrated with the mainboard.

Go get a shiny new box from one of the deals that pop up from some of the other places that build pc's like the ones XCelR8 mentioned. You'll get components that can be upgraded, a case that doesnt look like……this abomination and a good feeling when new stuff comes out because you'll be able to upgrade it however you like without any dramas.

  • +3

    nice suffocating case

  • +6

should be in the forum if you're asking for opinion.

  • Price looks normal. If I were to get a prebuilt I would expect it to be cheaper than buying the parts separately. Also seeing slow RAM with fast GPU is a no no.

  • +2

if you want a pre-built, there are a lot better options around

    In this case
    Non-standard power supply and motherboard
not optimal case/cpu cooling (better than used to be but nothing on 3rd party mesh cases)
    bare minimum GPU cooler design
SSD - 512gb is small these days and not sure of the performance of the included model. Likely aftermarket will be faster
Ram is low speed ddr5 and likely slow timings

  • FYI: having bought a previous Alienware the Motherboard and PSU are useless and cannot be used elsewhere, they will forever be together because of dumb non standard connections
So Case/PSU/Motherboard cannot be split off and probably if either dies your system you'll have to pay premium Dell prices for replacements if you're lucky they make them still when yours dies.

I'd stay away and if you strapped for cash get 2nd hand parts
if you don't care about upgrade abilty for 5+yrs and will just buy a new system again later then "eh its ok"

  • I have bought it last night still no confirmation from cashrewards that my order is tracked , for me normally it reflects in hours for other purchases.
Should I cancel order and buy again ?
As last time when I raise case for boost sim after few days they didn’t accepted.
Am worried as this time $$ amount quite high.

Is it normal for cashrewards to track purchase on dell website, any one have past experience?

    • +1

Should I cancel order and buy again ?

More like cancel and not order again.

  • +1

Normal price, and (arguably) poor specific components (mobo layout and case, at the minimum). It's a no from me.

  • -1

Does anyone know if these can be upgraded with the RTX 4090? The reviews suggest that some folks have purchased R15 with the 4090, complaining that they come with the 15A power cords. But the upgrade option for 4090 is not available online. I tried reaching out to the Dell sales chat today, but they have no clue: they say the R15 can't be customised with the 4090 because such option is missing on the page.

    • may not be available in AU, it would need the higher spec PSU which may or may not be an option

    • A 4090 is going to choke or get thermal throttled to a 4070 in this piece of shit case.

  • +1

Prebuilds often either have sub-optimal pairings of components or some overall non-ideal setup, whether it be space in the case, upgradability, etc…

I've been building my own, sniping parts from different retailers based on price.

This is what i've got so far

    CPU: i7 13700k $629
Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE CPU Air Cooler: $63.90
    RAM: 64GB DDR5 6400mhz RAM $342.42
    GPU: RTX 4080 GPU $1,799
Motherboard: MSI S1700 ATX PRO Z790-A WIFI DDR5 Motherboard $373.62

    $3207.94 so far

Just need a PSU, Case and SSD drives.

    • Quotes i've received from multiple retailers to have this build done by them range from $3.9 - $4.5k.

  • -1

    I'm using R11, love it.
my 3080 had some heating issue, Dell replaced it within a week. and didn't have any issues since. (over a year now)

Dell support is amazing, think its time to upgrade to this R15. :)

with the 14% cash reward I think it is a pretty good deal.

  • -2

Not bad, suits all but enthusiasts who care about throttle, ram, mb…

  • +3

Haha, “spec upgradable” - yeah with other proprietary dell parts. Won’t be very upgradable after you buy it.

    • +1

yeah the CASE, PSU & MB are ALL dell only, proprietary parts, so to do much of anything asside from upgrades of memory, storage and PCIe cards its a bust. Even the BIOS is locked down to ONLY support the generation of cpu in it, so even if the next cpu is a LGA1700, dell wont support it

alienware bios is better than the XPS line though for basic OC

  • +2

stay away from alienware unless u have cash u want to throw away, my personal take

  • +5

Should be a forum post if using this to make a decision. Currently just go to enigma, nebula or BPC etc and buy one of their PC if you want decent builds.

  • +2

Poor upgradability, poor help support, forced upsells, and this overall is not a great deal compared to competitors.
There's a reason people hate on Dell for gaming prebuilts.

  • +2

Watch the Gamer Nexus review, then go out and build your own or buy a prebuilt from a system builder. $3000 of ewaste, trash
