LG UltraPC Laptop 16" (Ryzen 5 7530U, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD) $999 + Delivery ($0 C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

Pretty decent specs for the price, with 16GB RAM and decently large battery (72Wh). Main downsides are no touchscreen, soldered RAM, and a little bit on the heftier side. Interestingly has 2 NVME slots which may be useful for dual booting.

Ryzen 7 7730U, 512GB SSD also available for $1399 - https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-ultra-pc-16-wuxga-lapt…

  • Zen 3 at 15W FYI

    • With a 72Wh battery this thing must last all day.

  • anyone knows how this compares to this? purchased this for$860 including cashback but can cancel order. also can look at lg grab 16 for under r$1900

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpade/thinkpad-e16-(16-inch-amd)/21jt001fau

  • Anyone know how this screen is like?

    • 300nit, so not amazing. But it's IPS so it should be OK.

If you're worried, go have a look in store.

  • Seems like a pretty good deal, almost too good (price error?)

    • Doubt it's a price error as I think it is also in this weeks catalogue. However, upon further research, it appears there is another major downside - NTSC 45% colour gamut coverage (equivalent to ~65% sRGB). Pretty annoyed about it since it would be a nearly perfect laptop for me otherwise…

      • It shows DCI-P3 99?

        • Where does it say this? I want to buy this computer but the screen is holding me back…

I am seeing 45% NTSC on https://www.lg.com/sg/laptops/lg-16u70r-gaa56a3 after searching for 16U70R online.

JB Website says WQXGA display but doesn't match the specs of the model on the AU website. I will head into JB today and check with them. https://www.lg.com/au/laptops/lg-16u70r-gaa53a

        • Just went to JB and they brought me the box to check it. The sticker on the box says 16U70R-GAA53A but also says that the screen is 1920 x 1200. Not sure who to believe anymore…

          • @rain-e: Yeah you are right it's LP160WU1 panel

            • @Wiz olo: Yep seems they've updated the website. Maybe it was you lol
              Thanks anyways good to know

      • Found that to be the same for me too.

        Pros
        * Dual slot for NVMe - RAID configs I guess (PCIe 3.0)
        * TDP at 15W

        Cons
        * Poor colour gamut coverage for the screen (you've mentioned!) - genuinely tempted to purchase but the screen quality and ram upgrade option just put me off it.
        * Soldered RAM - I find for this laptop it'd have been nice to be able to max it out at 32GB RAM, and the chipset supports 64GB of memory
        * Seems to be no backlit keyboard
        * It has windows home - prefer pro, and yes I could just upgrade but out of the box I'd like to not fuuk around with a massive list of todo(s) for a laptop

It only weighs 1.5KG which is fine for a 16" lappy for this price range given that a laptop from a little over a decade ago it was closer to 3KG.

The Ryzen 7 7730U model @ JBs is 400$ more and on sale too down from 1,999$ to 1399$ but includes:

        8-Core CPU vs 6-Core CPU
Double the SSD Storage to 512GB
        An extra GPU Core
        Larger L1/L2 caches

Hey mate. I ended up making the trip down into a store which had the laptop on display (Westfield Sydney) and bought the laptop in the end so here's my review.

          Pros:
          - Dual slot NVMe is great for dual booting Linux (main slot is gen 4, secondary is gen 3)
          - CPU at idle is usually below base clock (~1.5GHz) which is nice for battery life.
          - Weight is more around 1.6kg but upon further research, looks like that's average for laptops this size, if not slightly lighter, and is not as heavy as I expected given the weight is distributed over a 16" surface.
          - 16:10 aspect ratio
          - Overall build is really solid (no flex on back case, very little bend, some flex only in the center (around hjkl keys) but still way better than my old Acer.
          - Battery life is really good (hard to give a quantitative description but the past few days I've only been doing light web browsing/document editing and have been getting about 14+ hours SOT if extrapolated) - this was ultimately the reason I bought the laptop as you can't really find laptops anywhere with a 72Wh battery, let alone in this price range.

Cons (pretty similar to what you mentioned):
          - Poor colour gamut coverage (the screen being IPS helps a lot though however colours do appear noticeably off, especially when compared to something even with only 95% sRGB)
          - Keyboard is just okay (although this is subjective and I may just not be used to it yet)
          - Brightness is just meh (it feels more or less 300 nits as advertised, can't really expect too much)
          - Soldered RAM
          - No touchscreen
          - No fingerprint reader or WIndows Hello compatible camera
          - No backlit keyboard
          - A bit difficult to get the back open without scratching as they have these stickers on top of the screw holes that you need to peel off first (see https://www.notebookcheck.net/LG-Ultra-PC-16-2022-AMD-review…)

Overall I'm pretty happy with the laptop - mainly bummed about the colours, lack of a fingerprint reader, and backlit keyboard. However, the 72Wh battery and 2nd SSD slots more than make up for it to me. At this price point, I get that there have to be sacrifices to be made and overall I think the laptop presents really good value for money (even better if you use discounted gift cards and get it down to $900), especially with the 72Wh battery which stands out from the usual 50ish Wh on other 15.6" laptops.

Got this last weekend for my wife and she loves it. I didn't notice the colour gamut issue myself but then again I'm not a gfx or web designer so colour reproduction isn't critical for me or her. She loves the battery life and the 16:10 aspect especially with the 16" screen size. Really good for her use case which is 90% of the time emails and browsing. To that end the Ryzen 5 is heaps more than she needs as is the 16G RAM.

At $999 this is exceptional value for day to day tasks for gen pop. Build quality is great and its nice and light.

  • hey guys, i'm considering getting the 256gb version and just upgrading it to 512gb myself further down the line… i haven't done this before but is it easy enough to do myself or do you recommend me to just buy the 512gb from the get-go?
