MediaFire offers its Cloud Storage Service with 50GB of space for free. That's one of the highest-capacity free cloud storage services i've seen, although individual files are limited to 200MB or less. It features limited long term storage, file & folder sharing, online document viewing and editing, and more

It says;
"Professional and Business customers' accounts are never removed for inactivity."So perhaps you just need to log in often enough and the account will stay active?
Doesn't "Professional and Business" = not free account?
that's what I'm seeing.
Yes, so therefore maybe the free account expires if the account is inactive.
"Long Term Storage Limited" part is quite a bummer. Oh well you can still get free 50GB BOX.com accounts for lifetime if anyone's interested.
Yes, I'm interested.
I have a box.com account but only have 5GB. Can you PM me regarding how I can get the extra storge?
Cheers
I'd be a bit concerned that if (when?) they get taken down ala megaupload, what happens to my 50GB of private and confidential information?
I've seen many mediafire links, most of which aren't exactly what you'd call legal. I think they'd be on the radar, maybe not in the bullseye yet but definitely a blip.
Even if they don't get taken down, you should definately encrypt any personal data which you upload to this (or any similar) service.
confidential information? It's the cloud, there's nothing confidential in the cloud.
You shouldn't treat cloud storage any different to your personal PC. Namely, everything should have a backup somewhere. A cheap hard drive will let you have a copy of everything on the service with room for more. That's issue 1 sorted. As for issue 2, if you have files you don't trust the service to have, don't upload them to it.
I think you missed the point, wasn't in the least bit concerned about actually losing the data in general, more about who I'd be losing it to in the event of a takedown should it happen and with "businesses" like mediafire, that takedown could be at any moment.
Personally I'll never use a service like this, much rather have backups I can touch and see over relying on any of these mobs.
I see. It depends on what you plan to upload then I guess.
Personally I don't use nor plan to use this service. I do use Amazon and Apple services to put my music in the cloud but thats about it other than Drop Box as the very rare but convenient way to share the odd thing or two.
Mediafire isn't going down anytime soon. Recently they've taken a really hard line with infringing files, I doubt you'll be able to find it that easily anymore.
That said I would still feel more safe with dropbox/box and the like.
i used to love mediafire. we can search its contents via google ie www.mediafire: madonna and it will give us links.
no timer and daily limit like others (megauupload etc)now cant do those anymore.
Cloud services aren't indexed which is why you can't search through files any more.
Yeah I've noticed that too. I think Google was pressured into removing anything related to Mediafire from its search results. It definitely was the best service for quickly finding a music single as it seemed to have just about everything.
If you already had a free Mediafire account, it's been given the 50gb limit, so no need to do anything. Mine is still active and this is the first time I've logged into it in probably two years.
My account was created in 2008. I don't remember ever using it. Oops.
they terminated my account for uploading mp3s and what not lol
i had over 10GB of stuff on there (not all mp3s).. all gone :(
ADrive also offer 50GB free :) http://www.adrive.com/plans
Thanks for posting akula!
Make sure you encrypt any sensitive data before uploading and also note USA law applies to the data. Assume it can be read and copied at will.
Be careful if you plan to share your content - read the "Content Distribution" description.. transfers will be charged to your account.
Advertisment free box not ticked for the free membership option, wonder what that means??
It means you will see ads on the website like normal. As a pro etc account they wont show ads.
lol so many questions.. sounds too complicated to be worth the hassle.
Mediafire use to be the best service on the internet to 'Share' Files , with unlimited similtaneous downloads it meant all you needed was an hour to do a nice spring clean of your iTUNES…. DISCLAIMER: Piracy is Bad mmmk
I've got an old unwanted 60GB portable USB Drive, it's FREE and VERY secure ;)
Thanks! can I 'map a network drive' to this via an IP address over the net?
Will it have 24/7 uptime?
:)no, just pop over pick it up from me, go home and with a 10 meter long USB cable put that 60GB harddrive in the roof cavity! enjoy!
basically the storage is for a "Limited" time, then they'll put the hard sell and say "Pay Up"
I don't see anything that would support that assumption.
'Limited' probably means when the storage requirements for free accounts becomes excessive, oldest content/least accessed is deleted.
Cant complain since its free, but the words "Try it" makes me wonder if this is a bait and switch promotion. Because more often than not, when companies use the word "Try" it usually means a limited time free trial.
No deal here… MediaFire used to provide unlimited cloud storage space for free accounts. They limited it to 50GB a few months back.
+Can this even be classified as a deal when it's always been free and will continue to be free? It's not like it's a deal for only a limited amount of time or anything.
Your Current Plan: 50GB, I have been registered since November 07, 2009, was unlimited but after the change automatically set me to 50GB…, no deal since this is just a free account allocation which has always been 50Gb since the change…
I won't neg this because there must be some people previously unaware this storage is available. However, as stig points out, ADrive is also available for free. I've been with ADrive for over 2 years now without a problem.
I checked their privacy policy. It seemed decent. I got the free 50GB storage. Pretty nice deal. I also think their UI is really nice and simple. User friendly and clean.
How is this even a deal? I've used mediafire for so long and a bunch of other online storage options including dropbox, box.net, google docs before it was google drive. It's always been free.
Is anyone aware of a site I can upload a file (about 30-40MB in size) that I can then give people the link to so they can download it - without me giving them my login/password?
Google docs, make it public.
adrive.com
Note that the share links are lengthy and cause some people problems (when their mail handler doesn't handle it properly)
To get around it I then feed the URL into tinyurl.com and give the small url to friends.
I think the public sharing of your files via the link expires after time (or when you choose to no longer publicly share the file)
