  • How do I get the 5 percent taken off of the 491? Thanks!

  • Has anyone had much success in the past with regards to confirming Aldi's stock availability, prior to the Thursday sales? Or is it more a case of 'by the time you find out, it's way too late'. Also, can anyone recommend certain Melbourne stores over others, in terms of which are mmore likely to have the most stock? Cheers.

    • They won't confirm how much stock they have, don't bother trying. Generally computers don't sell out on Thursday mornings. I don't know about Melbourne, but look for the quietest store (not sure how you'll find that out!).

  • Does anyone else think that it's unwise to get a laptop from Aldi? Maybe a netbook but for a high end laptop that you are splashing out over $1000 for, I'd go with a more reputable brand for peace of mind, reliability, build quality and performance (not just specs, I'm referring to heat generation, noise levels, battery life etc). Maybe I'm thinking like this because my job involves my laptop so it's important for me but still, I think this applies to many others.

Besides that, it's not much cheaper than a Dell or a HP laptop with comparable specs and probably just as or more expensive if you use a coupon for aforementioned or similar brands.

    • Medion laptops are sold world wide and are extremely popular in the UK. They are excellent value for money and are of good build qualities. At the end of the day you need to understand there are only 4 or so companies that 'build' laptops, and they are probably none you have heard of. Everything is rebadged, and when you are using common components amongst brands there is very little difference between them all (generic or brand name).

I personally have owned one and it was great, my mate has had his for 30 months and its still going strong. I know others who still use theirs after nearly 4 years.

The lower end unit has been reviewed by Smart House in Australia and it got 4.5/5 stars. Keep in mind it has a 2 year warranty too, all HP/Compaq, Acer, Toshiba etc. are only 1 year.

Not to mention you cannot find a similarly configured notebook in Australia for even close to this price. I work at an electronics retailer and sell all of the above brands plus more and the closest notebook that can match the specs is well over $2000.

This is not Aldi knocking together a notebook in their warehouse. It is sold internationally and Medion have a 'decent' reputation.

  • Do any of you have experience in obtaining after-sales service and/or support on computers from Aldi? The specifications and price are ok (very similar to a Dell on offer last week after their $350 discount), but I'd worry about buying from a supermarket unless it was clear to me that a local and "professional" service & support pathway was available. Can anybody advise?

    • Within 2 months you just take it back to the store and they will give you a refund.

During the warranty period (2 yrs?) you ring the helpline. If it breaks after the 2 months but during the warranty, the helpline will give you a number which you can then use to get a refund at the supermarket.

Not great support, but no different to buying from any other department store or big electrical retailer.

  • Hi Smith,
Are you sure the Dell had one at comparable price? Did you add the BluRay drive, which is around 280 AUD extra (from memory, I may be way off)?
Also, did it have NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GS DirectX 10 graphics with 512MB dedicated graphics card?

I think it is a bargain at this price- but I am waiting for the Quad on Laptops.
I guess Aldi also has some sort of returns policy ( two months if you are not satisfied?)- please go through their site.

If anyone buys, do let us know the performance etc.

    Cheers,

PS:I already have a comparable laptop, so I will skip this one ;-)

    • You are correct on both points. While a few dollars less, the Dell comes with less good: 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) 8600M GS (128bit) Graphics, and the optical device is not BluRay, being a Slot load 8X max DVD+/-RW Drive with DVD+R.

    • Oh, I forgot to say, that the Dell at similar pricing was optioned up to a 2.4 mhz processor, not the 2.0 mhz. That is significant. The Dell comes with a nice case, and SUPPORT. (The Aldi one is nice, however, I'm not knocking it)

  • As from 22 Jan, Aldi are getting in fresh supplies of this laptop and reducing the price to $1299. Now, I join Scotty in recommending it.
